Had a chance to watch the 18-19 version of the Wildcats today. It's early but I have a couple of takeaways. 1. The returning Sophomores and Juniors have done a remarkable makeover since last year. Apparently they really took off-season conditioning to heart because they all look leaner and stronger and more mature. Alyssa Adams and Makayla Mabry really grabbed my attention today. They look bigger, stronger, faster. Lexi K looks better as well. 2. The two transfers - Jazz Taylor and Lexi D are seriously good. Can't wait until Anna McLeod is eligible, either. Big time upgrades. 3. The freshmen are, well, freshmen. They all look a little soft. They will benefit from a year of S&C. Their tongues were kinda hanging out today. First impressions were good. Didn't know what to think about Kamryn but she's gonna be a player for sure. Doubt that any of them will make much impact this year.
One more very very cool tidbit. University of Arkansas will be at Moody this season. Make plans now, that ought to be fun.

Watching the women working out. They go home starting tomorrow. Freshmen are all taking a summer class so they can’t leave until Thursday. Speed, speed, speed. We have so much more speed than last year. It will be much much harder to get away with pressuring this team than last year. If I were projecting a lineup, I see Taylor and Galindo sharing minutes at 1. Taylor the better defender and Galindo the better 3 point shooter. Breanna will play more 2-guard along with Sara. Dominique and Josie are the best at 3. The 4 bigs all look good but Ducat and Adams are really standing out right now. (By the way, Alyssa is 6’0” but has nearly a 6’8” wingspan.) Don’t expect much from the freshmen. However, Miller and Mraz are very good 3-point shooters.
Ladies win #1 by 43 points. All on the roster played. Bri Wright led the scoring with 24 points. We put up 30 3-pointers, hitting 11. New additions Ducat-2 points, Taylor-4 points, Freshmen Miller-6, Cooper-6. Seem to have lots of depth. Some missed layups and too many missed free shots but all in all a come warm up for our season.
Ladies take a 98-43 victory over D3 Howard Payne. The Yellowjackets jump out early after a few ACU turnovers, and like everyone figured, it quickly turned into all Wildcats.
Ducat finishes with 14 points and 13 boards to lead the team.
Still need to up our shooting from the free throw line, and we missed a few open threes, but overall a solid performance in front of a raucous crowd of mostly AISD and ACS kids that were LOUD the whole time. I wish there would be 1/3 of that energy for all of the MBB/WBB games in Moody throughout the year. Shoot, I'd take 1/5 of that energy.

Was at the game yesterday. Eastern NM has a group of big, physical post players. It was really good for us to play a team like that after D3 and NAIA teams. Their guards were just no match for our guards’ speed and size.
Ducat doesn’t mind doing the dirty work under the basket. She had 13 rebounds including 7 offensive rebounds. Her only basket was a 3 point shot but otherwise didn’t shoot but a couple of times. She reminds me of a less bulky Sydney Shelstead in that she has very strong hands. Once she gets her hands on the ball you can’t take it away from her.
Jazz didn’t play much yesterday. Freshman Maddie Miller played a lot off the bench. Coach G seems to have settled on starters but is experimenting with various players in the rotation.
My choice for breakout player this year is Alyssa Adams. She’s 6’0” but has very long arms. She was a force! 14 points and 7 boards in only 16 minutes.
We will know a lot more after this next week as the ladies face New Mexico State and UTEP along with Texas Southern. Last year they were just awful on the road. Hopefully, this year will be better since their first 6 conference games include 5 on the road.

The Women left yesterday for Las Cruces for a 7:00 CT game with New Mexico State. The Aggies won the WAC regular season and went to the WNIT after losing in the conference tournament. They are led by reigning WAC player of the year guard Brooke Salas (5’11”) and guard Gia Pack (5’8”). On paper, we seem to match up pretty well but they will bea big test. Massey ranks us at 287 and MSU at 159.
It appears we can watch the stream from the NMSU website tonight at 7:00.
