Does anyone know ACU's plan for the old Sherrod married student apartments? I drove by them today and they look in pretty bad shape.

There are no plans right now and it will cost a fortune to tear them down but that’s what eventually will happen, I’m told.

They certainly were not built with the same quality as the older dorms on campus. I guess the cost of repairing and updating them is more than their value. Kind of a shame.

Sherrod was built in the early 70's when the enrollment was booming at ACU and more dorm space was crucial. Sherrod was a pre-fab building -- a fad of that era. The apartments were brought in as concrete slabs and put together like a giant jigsaw puzzle (unlike both Sikes and Smith-Adams, which to ACU with the entire room already built out and then the dorm stacked up like huge legos).
In the 70's and 80's, Sherrod was THE place to live for sophomores or juniors, but by the 1990's and into the early 2000's, they were used more often as married students apartments. They have not been used for housing for at least 10 years and have been allowed to fall into terrible disrepair. Pretty sad all the way around.

My brother lived there in 77-78. He said that maintenance problems began from almost day 1.

Don't know how I missed this conversation. My wife actually lived in Sherrod 8 years ago. It was rough; very rough. It was when the snow apocalypse happened in Abilene. The inside windows froze.
Before I left ACU, I sat in a meeting with some top leaders around the campus. The topic of Sherrod came up. The truth is, they don't actually know how much it would cost to tear them down; they have not actually had an estimate done. They anticipate it will cost well over a $1 million dollars, but that is just a guess.
Right now, squatters try to get into them all the time. A lot of departments use them for storage, but I would not say that is particularly smart or safe.
They could certainly use the land for something else, but the neighborhoods around are pretty rough. If you built a dorm, you would need lots of security.

I would throw a $100 bill at that fund request. As a retired guy I would actually donate a lot of time to that demo project - with lots of de-struction tools and muscle. It just isn't a good look and likely get considerably worse before that project is undertaken.
Unfortunately, they could be filled with asbestos. Also unfortunate, unless a specific project is ready to replace them (funded - to include site demo and prep) then I can't see funding just to bring them down.
A buddy and his family was in there during the first half of the 90's. It was bad. You just knew there was serious mold issues. They froze in the winter and burned up in the summer.
With dorms generally needing upgraded, I can see someone else asking the same general question as to "does anyone know what's going on with Sherrod" 10 years from now.
However, I am always amazed at the huge and positive changes that have been made throughout the rest of campus since I was in school - started undergrad in '87. That is a regular conversation within our house.

Is Smith-Adams still used as a dorm? It and Sherrod are off campus enough that they kind of seem forgotten about. The good thing about them being away from the main campus is not many people drive by them. Sherrod in particular gives ACU a bad look. I wonder if ACU could partner with the city of Abilene to do something with that area. Both entities seem to have perpetual money issues though.

Yes, S-A is still used.
Sherrod is an eye-sore, but the area around both S-A and Sherrod is used for cross country meets (or used to be, but now they do their meets down North 10th). And the old three-hole golf course now contains ACU's Disc Golf course, home to the No. 18 ACU Disc Golf team (they finished 18th this year at the National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships in the Championship Draw).
