Augustana is surprising. I suppose that means that Chicago State would not be leaving then. Augustana would be a deal breaker for me. I just remembered there are two Augustanas. One in Rock Island, IL and another in Sioux Falls, SD. The larger one I suppose is the one the WAC is considering. It would be a good cultural fit, but travel would be hard and winter events would be miserable. It doesn’t change my opinion much. Maybe a 4 division conference would be the solution.

From Twitter
@asunsports Presidents have voted to enter in to a 60-day negotiating period with hopes of adding Eastern Kentucky, Central Arkansas and Jacksonville State to the #ASUN.
3 FCS potential football teams to the ASUN which doesn’t currently sponsor football.

Is there a particular reason UCA wants to pull out of the Southland? There seems to be lots of talk of them leaving. Do they not feel like a good fit geographically?

Okay, looks like the first domino falls! UCA’s rumored departure becomes another factor to think about as the #Texas4 contemplate a move to the WAC. The Southland won’t be as good without UCA.

A quick look on-line shows that 4 current Atlantic Sun teams play football: Kennesaw and North Alabama in the FSC Big South; Stetson in the FCS Pioneer League (the Pioneer does get an FCS bid - I think - but I think of it as a non-scholarship football league); and Liberty, which plays as an FBS independent. Adding EKU, UCA and J-ville State could possibly get the A-Sun to the point where they might be able to get an automatic FCS bid. Incidentally, another school in the A-Sun that is very familiar to ACU is Lipscomb -- which has a shared heritage with ACU.

I’m curious where Central goes in football. Will they try to join the Big South? Is the ASUN looking to start a football conference? Will they apply to become an independent FBS program? Or will they hope the Southland will allow them to play football only in the SLC?
Also, the ASUN is really a tough conference for them to compete against. Lipscomb and Florida Gulf Coast are better than everyone other than Stephen F.

Reddit CFB just tweeted that a conference needs 6 to get an auto-bid to the playoff. I counted 5 schools with football programs. I don’t see Stetson adding scholarships to play football in a new conference, and I certainly don’t think Liberty is moving back to the FCS even with all of their scandals recently.

I have started following the WAC for XC and T&F -- just in case. Interesting tidbit I came across -- the WAC has announced that is WILL have a XC conference meet, but will NOT have an indoor T&F meet. With the national XC meet moved back to Monday, March 15, and the National indoor track meet scheduled in Fayetteville for Friday-Saturday, March 12-13, you will see a lot of crazy scheduling going forward. The WAC will allow member schools to compete at indoor meets, if they choose. Not terribly surprising that the WAC has cancelled their indoor T&F championships - like most smaller D-1 meets they have to host their indoor meet at a rented facility (last year it was at Boise State), since no member schools have a competitive indoor facility. The WAC XC meet will be held in Seattle on Saturday, Feb 27 -- should be pretty chilly in late February in the Pacific Northwest. You will probably see several conferences cancel their indoor conference meet -- the WAC makes 6 that have already cancelled -- the other 5 D-1 conferences being America East, Atlantic 10, Big East, Northeast and the Ivy League.
Right now, the Southland plans on having championship events in both XC and indoor T&F. The SLC XC meet is currently scheduled for Monday, February 15 -- the earliest XC meet in 2021, but being in the South/Southwest, it is possible to get in the meet earlier than other conferences located further north. Then, the indoor T&F meet will be held on Sunday-Monday, Feb 28-March 1 at the Crossplex in B'ham, AL -- a rented facility for the SLC as well. Having the meets 2 weeks apart will give SLC athletes a higher likelihood of being able to compete in both events at a higher level. This will benefit ACU since both the men's and women's team will compete well in XC (the men could contend for the title and the women should be top 3) and still be able to contend for big points in the distance races at the indoor meet.
One big monkey wrench for the ACU in the SLC indoor meet -- the format this year will be that an athlete has to be in the top-16 of their event to even be able to enter that event at indoor conference. ACU is having a difficult time finding enough meets that will let them compete to get time/marks to make the top-16. Tech is limiting their home meets to 7 other teams per meet (usually they have 16-20 schools at most of their meets) and the T&F bluebloods will get priority (the schools like USC, UT, TAMU, Florida, Florida State). Our coaches are hoping to get ACU into 1-2 of the Tech meets. TAMU, where ACU has usually opened the indoor season, has told ACU that they will probably not get invited to an indoor meet there this year. Other venues where ACU has gone in the past like the Air Force Acad and ABQ (UNM) has not announced whether they will even have indoor meets this year. ACU may have to qualify runners based on 1 or at the most 2 meets to get into the SLC indoor meet.
