Two games in a row with good free throw shooting. Nice to see some improvement there, but we really stink at 3 point shooting. Gayman has lost something and McLaughlin hasn’t done much as of late. They were the only two shooting a decent percentage as of a few games ago.

Wildcatter, you are right. Gayman seems broken right now, though defensively he is doing a good job.

Oh well, some random thoughts: just because we leave good 3 point shooters wide open in the corner does not mean we cannot still win. And just because we fall for high school level shot fakes that lead to drives or passes to open shooters does not mean we won't win. We have some great athletes and sooner or later I hope they start hitting threes. I think it was a three that lead to the rally in the second half. We seemed to get going better after that one. I am always impressed by Mahki, and Kohl is getting more consistent each game it seems. If we keep winning, Kohl might be an all conference center. Simmons always seems to surprise me with his agility and ball sense.
Next up is TAMCC and UIW beat them by 19 points. UIW actually took Wyoming into overtime before losing, so I guess they are better than I thought. They played quite well given their lineup. They were outmatched without their big man. They executed some set plays to perfection.

The Cats don't play again until next Saturday (Feb. 6). There's no reason to be complacent though, so I hope we can take advantage of this little break and see it as an "improvement week." There's plenty of work we can do with film, with our shooting, our fast break offense, etc.

As a team we are right where we finished last season in 3PT% - .310 now, .309 then. Transition defense was on point - UIW had one fast-break point. One.

Personal opinion--I believe Gayman works so hard on defense he has lost his offensive game. Why? Because if he doesn't play defense in Joe's scheme he doesn't play. He wants to get minutes so badly his scoring has suffered-which if true, is a shame. At the start of the season his offensive game kept us in ball games and he is, in my opinion, one of our best offensive options. We've lost that option right now and unless he gets it back, we won't be the team we could be. Scorers have to get in the flow of the game and playing 2-3 minutes and then getting pulled is not conducive to offensive production (case in point--we've won 14 games with only two scorers in double figures and our leading scorer is only at 11.6). Sometimes when playing "a defensive scheme" you sacrifice an offensive player's strengths. Is that best for our team? I don't really know.
Scheme, part 2: Last game against UIW, Kohl came in (2nd half) and immediately scored 2 buckets and got 3 fouls on UIW's only "big man" sending him to the bench. Then, because of our "scheme" of defense first--Kohl came out when no one was within 6 inches (height wise) of the big guy. I know Kohl is more effective when he plays in shorter bursts; I know we have 4 guys Joe likes to play in the paint (all effective in their own way)--but we could have gone to Kohl in the paint time and time again and he would have scored 30 points or fouled out most of their team. Instead we held to our sub pattern and kept them (UIW) in the game to the end. Sometimes the "scheme" can get in the way of winning a ball game. My opinion only.
