Who would have dreamed early in the season when posters were complaining about our free throw shooting, that the biggest game in ACU sports history would be won by making two free throws?

Guilty as charged. I was very vocal about their FT shooting woes. Brings great joy to me to have to eat that crow. I'll take another helping tomorrow!

Our FT shooting is still not great, but awesome to get them when they count!!!

They have definitely stepped up and knocked them down in the big games. Joe said he wasn’t worried about free throws. I guess we shouldn’t have either! 😁

They make them when it matters but I'd rather it didn't come down to a FT shooting contest.

The Texas Tech board was celebrating ACU's win but had one scary post: If ACU wins, I got $50 saying their head coach will be the head coach at UT next year I don't see him making that big of a jump, but you never know. Hoping Mr. Ward can work some magic.

Obviously Little Rock has a deeper history in basketball, but the point stands that it isn't impossible that Golding gets an offer from some serious schools like Texas. It helps that his is gonna be cheaper than other coaches.

Texas fans are in a dilemma, they want him gone but they don't have a replacement in mind or a way to justify the financial burden after the football coach was bought out.

Golding will have offers and looks but schools like Texas will want a coach with serious chops coming off this stretch with Shaka. The rumor last year was that they would go after Beard. I don’t know that seeing ACU make the tourney twice will be enough for their boosters to go after someone like Joe. At least I hope.

As an alumnus of both ACU and UT Austin, I stay involved with both schools. Both Beard and Golding's name have come up among UT boosters. But why would either leave a place where they are rising superstars to go into the frying pan that is going to be the UT basketball job. Texas is soon unveiling a new coliseum (also called Moody) and will be demanding results. Smart was reportedly trying to work out a contract extension but the mood is were that to happen the Athletic Director would be a target for dismissal. Now that is likely off the table. It will have to be a big name coach and a ton of money if Smart is fired early, otherwise UT is already concerned the new building may have a 10 win or so ball club in it. Lots of dissatisfaction, especially since Texas is clearly becoming a serious basketball state. Boosters are likely to demand some kind of action.
I got an email from a noted UT physics professor who said I was right to say ACU was very strong and played great defense, as he reported the score accurately. He mentioned in a joking way that a major international talk UT was hosting in honor of a famous physicist was being given by an ACU ex who is a professor at Caltech. He said maybe he should begin the lecture by mentioning the game and that he had gone to school here. While not a good idea, the point is people are talking about ACU who previously would not know much about us. How cool is that?
We are going to open up our new Moody and I hope Joe is planning to capitalize on our new found respect and facilities to recruit some fine quality players of high character and high skill (and high height...)

Coach Sampson of the University of Houston (where I am currently working on my PhD) had some very positive words for ACU.

In reply to Coach Golding’s future, ACU was built by a long line of faculty, staff, administrators, and coaches who were not there for the salary (we rarely can compete) or facilities. They were there as a labor of love and a service to God. My parents told us kids this even though they had offers to teach at bigger universities, even a Big Ten university, but turned them down. This is why ACU is so unique.

I do think there may be efforts ongoing to make it harder for Joe to leave AND to make it harder for his assistants to leave also. Brette Tanner does not get nearly as many kudos as he deserves for implementing ACU's defense. Joe and Brette work seamlessly together -- they make a potent team leading the Wildcats.
