Cats are up and in control, driving the ball approximately around UCA's 30. We have just gained 8 yards and have second and two. About to go up 28-14. We call the dumbest play of the year, drop back to right, try to throw short to the left over coverage and manage to lose 6 yards. I turned to my friend and said that was a momentum breaker and we will now see a shift in the game -- they stopped us because we stopped us, so we will probably lose the game. Bingo, that is exactly what happened. We don't get the first down after all and from that point forward UCA becomes a confident and in-charge team. So strange... one dumb play when all we needed was 2 yards on second down in their territory with the lead, driving south for a likely score. UCA is thrilled with our blunder and explodes down the field for a TD and from that point forward the whole team looks defeated. Why do we shoot ourselves in the head?

I’m glad someone else noticed that this play was the turning point.

It was so unnecessary, really dumb.

I wonder how many times a game when ACU and UCA play that Collums thinks "Y'all fired me to replace me with this?" I know there were other issues but I haven't really seen a major change in play since he was fired. Certainly not like what Carthel has done at SFA.

I know there were other issues but I haven't really seen a major change in play since he was fired. Certainly not like what Carthel has done at SFA. Collums was not fired just because of the performance on the field. The academic side of the program was in shambles and there was a brawl in Hammond at the end of his last game that may have been the last straw. Is he a better offensive coach than what we have now? I would say yes. One of the craziest aspects of this is that Lamberson completely out-coached Collums in a playoff game in 2010 and Dorrel out-coached him in 2009 and 2008. Maybe the issue is that Collums has evolved in his philosophy and the current coaches at ACU have not.

And EKU is up by 7 over Tarleton with 2 minutes left in the half. ACU can play with either of these teams, might even be favored. We will definitely be favored over Tarleton St. Not sure about EKU at their stadium. Sam Houston is a 13.5 point favorite over SFA (probably the top two teams in the WAC). Poor Dixie St. is a 42.5 point underdog to #1 FCS team South Dakota St. Future opponent Jacksonville ST. now down 17-0 at half. I'd be stunned if we were favorites over anyone but Lamar the rest of the way.

I leave to go the symphony and we are up 14-7. Come home to see we got killed. Maybe it is a good thing I wasn't able to watch the whole game. I stayed and watched the symphony of destruction (for you Megadeth fans out there) at Wildcat Stadium.

So disappointing. Too many breakdowns. Back to our penalty game. I believe Earle will be a really good leader and QB but he has to have some help. 2 drops by Williams, 2 drops by Kobe. Dobbins has no burst because of the injury. We continue to advertise what we're going to do on key plays. Defensively we just got steamrolled in the 2nd half. Titre and Brannon didn't play so we wore down. I still can't figure why we let Winningham run free. He's certainly a player but we made him look like an all-pro tonight. Stapp seemed to be the only thorn in his side. Where were our DE's tonight? OK, now we have to regroup. Our next 2 games are winnable if we can pick ourselves off the floor. By the way, why don't we have a camera on the visiting side so we can see the home stands? Continually looking at the almost empty visitor side is discouraging--just like this game. Super assessment. The drops just took all the energy out of our offense…It was nice to see one deep shot. They way the game was called, I wish we could see more here. Stapp probably earned his all-conference nod for his work against Hudson. If we can have another corner emerge to his level, we would have so many more options. To watch Stapp in person is a real treat. Hard to see how active he is watching online. He is freaking everywhere.

Running game was working and we tried to get too cute. Hindsight is 20/20 but, man that one was a headscratcher.

Yep... it was a "How can we do something that risks the game" headscratcher -- another version of MacBeth.

Yep... it was a "How can we do something that risks the game" headscratcher -- another version of MacBeth. The worst designed and executed play I saw all night. Another play that I thought really hurt what little momentum we still had going even though it didn’t lead to a score, was the out of bounds pass at the end of the first half that prevented us from simply running the clock out. UCA showed on that their defensive and offensive performance of that exchange they they now controlled the game.

The aftermath. It will take quite a coaching job to lift this team from the depths it fell in the 2nd half. We not only looked defeated but demoralized in the late 4th quarter. For those who have applauded coach Smith as a great defensive coach, how do you feel now? The middle of the field was uncovered all night. Did we ever make an adjustment? I thought Morgan played his heart out at DT but he needed some rest. Kier looked to be injured. I was surprised and heartened by our kick returner (Williams?, Johnson?, Brooks-Wess?) He ran hard and could have broken a long one with a little luck. Maybe the success Lutz had will inspire more passes to the TE. Use Mansell more and have him throw a pass or two. Even I can catch on after a while that he's in to run. What are our coaches thinking? And that double pass from Earle to Kobe to...throw that in the trash. Can Neese run a route over 2 yards long? We were playing solid offensive football and then went to cute. Why? Yes, it will need to be a major effort this week to get this team off the floor. Do we have the least bit of pride left? I'll stay tuned. Go Cats.
