ACU needs to work on kick blocking. That is at least the third bloched kick in 5 games. In our defense, a flag for leverage or leaping should have been thrown both times. You can't use another player to gain more height to block a kick. You are exactly right. Both of the blocks were illegal. On the 2nd one, the LB clearly got on the back of the down lineman.

I'm a UND fan and I watched the second half of this game since we play later this year. Oh. My. Gosh. I created an account here just to comment on the broadcast - that was legitimately the worst play by play guy I've ever listened to. Sorry you guys had to sit through that lol. ACU looks good. Our weakness this year is our pass defense and it looks like your qb can sling it! Solid game all around. Thanks for the props. The announcers were so bad they were funny. The one guy didn’t know much about the rules. Im really looking forward to the game with UND. Totally new experience for team and fans. Do you know if this is a home and home or just one game?

I was listening to the broadcast on the radio and conjunction with the video feed. Got to be so bad that the ESPN announcers were such homers. That one announcer felt like the refs were picking on Utah's quarterback all the time. Near the end of the game I turned it over to listen to the announcers. Every time ACU got the ball it sound like they were going to start crying they were so sad sounding. . Actually started laughing because they were being so funny near the end.

Yes, the refs missed 11 targeting calls, 9 offensive pass interference calls, and at least 5 defensive pass interference calls. Was probably the worst officiated game in the history of football. If the game had been properly officiated, Utah Tech would have won the game by at least 35 points.

Totally legit block, squared up, hands to the shoulder pads …… and the announcer is screaming targeting. Whaaaat?? He even went to talk to the replay officials who informed him that it was a clean hit. I am sorry that the player was concussed, his head hit the turf hard. Let’s hope he’s okay.

When ACU scored the last two times (and another time when Rovaughn picked up a first down) the announcer sounded so depressed. “Well, there they go again”. It was hilarious. The color analyst tried his best to change the tone but the game announcer would have none of it. At the same time, the Trailblazers did some good things. The announcer needed to acknowledge that. His commentary was insulting to his own team, IMO.

First post here, and I enjoy the discussion. Speaking of announcing, the ACU radio guys do a nice job but they sounded as if they were in a soundproof booth Saturday. They said they were in Utah, but they may as well have been announcing from a studio in Abilene. I couldn’t detect a hint of a band or crowd noise whatsoever. Aren’t there crowd mics?

It looked like their band could fit in a medium small room. They did not even wear the same clothes. I sort of miss the old majestic band uniforms but more and more university bands are wearing casual clothes. Reminds me of the old days at Rice.

The ESPN+ broadcast did not have much cheering in the background either. You could hear some faint cheering but not much. Not sure the crowd was very large. Stats did not have an attendance number.

Early in the broadcast, the radio broadcasters mentioned that they could not hear anything outside the booth. They mentioned it when UTU got their first penalty and they said that they were having to guess at the penalty, since they could not hear anything in the booth from the microphones. They also mentioned that they were unable to hear any crowd sounds, so not any crowd mic or the ability to hear the stadium announcer. Pretty bush league set up, but not surprising.
Speaking of bush league, apparently the UTU broadcasters never got the memo that when they are broadcasting a game on ESPN, they are NOT working for UTU, but for ESPN. I hate that apparently neither of the Utah schools that ACU plays in volleyball this coming weekend have the ability to broadcast games from their indoor arena. Bummer -- will have to follow both the UTU and SUU game on live stats only.
I remember last year when some CatChatters were frustrated that the local ESPN basketball announcers were positive toward some of the opposing players, even having an interview with opposing players who led the effort to defeat the Wildcats. THAT is the way that announcers should act when they are broadcasting for ESPN and I am proud that some of "our" announcers do just that.

THAT is the way that announcers should act when they are broadcasting for ESPN and I am proud that some of "our" announcers do just that. I remember that argument last year during basketball season. It was so ridiculous. Our guys do a great job of being an ESPN broadcaster, not an ACU broadcaster in those games. Our camera work this year in football has been rough, but the broadcaster's themselves are great still! About the only true positive I feel like I could say there was from the UTU broadcast was that the sound of the broadcast was done well, and here's what I mean by that. When we play at ACU and it's our broadcast, I have to have the volume on my TV at about 45-50 for the sound to be heard from the broadcasters, when they go to the sideline reporter, it's typically a decent amount louder. Same thing when they go to commercials, it is significantly louder than the actual game broadcast, and I have to turn the commercials down to about 25-30 on the volume. I don't think I really had many issues with the UTU broadcast when it came to sound mixing. Other than that, the broadcast was pretty bad, almost to the level of the GCU basketball broadcasters.

The ESPN+ broadcast did not have much cheering in the background either. You could hear some faint cheering but not much. Not sure the crowd was very large. Stats did not have an attendance number. Looking at the pictures of their stadium... it looks like their new pressbox doesn't have windows that open on the press level and no openings for mics to be stuck outside the booths. Some stadiums have mounted mics on the outside and radio/tv just has to plug their XLR cords in to get the feed. From a production standpoint, I am sure this is annoying that nothing was available.
