I got to hear Coach Patterson recently speaking to a relatively small group -- about 35 people. He is very good and very transparent when he speaks. To me, one of the most interesting things he said was that the 105 players that they go to fall camp with is the roster for the fall -- there will not be anyone else added. That means that there will be up to 85 players on scholarship and 20ish walkons on the roster. So a preferred walkon truly is a preferred walkon -- they are given the opportunity to walkon and they can't simply show up on registration day and get a practice uniform.
Why is this interesting to me? For decades the walkon program that is almost exclusively active in football and T&F, has been an important way to balance the budget at ACU. In a freshman class of around 900, getting in 30 or so football walkons on the first day of classes and 30-40 T&F walkons has had an impact on making the freshman class goals. (The fact that the average T&F scholarship for both genders is right at a 1/3 scholarship still means that their scholarship athletes are still paying 2/3 of the college costs.) So why is football bringing in fewer walkons? First of all, the coaches have always wanted to have a more manageable number to coach. Second, a large majority of the football walkons, in particular the "first day of classes" athletes, leave ACU within a year and that damages the retention rate and ACU's retention rate is lower than most of our peer schools. Last, ACU is making an effort to be highly cognizant of Title IX restrictions. So, a 105-man roster in football will be the ceiling. The men's T&F team roster size will be capped from here on. There will be no cap on the women's T&F roster size. It is a reality of modern D-1 athletics.

When I was playing, we had certain day 1 walk-ons that had no business walking onto a high school program much less a college one. It would have taken the entire team to be down to the final 11 healthy players before any one of these guys would ever see the game field. The issue though is not that they were there (even though they did steal some reps in individual drills) but that they would talk trash to guys and walk around campus acting like they were the star of the team as opposed to 4th string water boy. I agree these kids never stayed long and generally got the crap beat out of them as they were physically not able to compete enough to even give a passable look as a scout team player. In one particular funny time, there was a terrible walk on nose tackle (well really a middle Lineback who got too fat to play LB but was way too small for NT) who decided to keep running his mouth to the first team O-line. In the beginning of the team section of practice, we all decided to bury this guy all day at practice. We went full speed the entire drill on this guy and got yelled at a few times by the coaches for pancaking this guy as they did not want guys on the ground in practice for potential injury concerns. That actually ended up being his last day on the team as he quit after practice. We need walk ons, but not guys like this.

Since the 63 FCS scholarships are equivalency scholarships, I guess they could have 85 on including partials?

That is correct, epe. In FCS there can be 63 full scholarships spread among 85 players maximum. A full roster can have 105 players including walk-ons. The preferred walk-ons can practice during the summer and generally will have a number.

I have no clue about who the silent commit is but was looking at Charlie Leota's info this morning and he certainly looks like he could clog up the middle. He and Massey would be a good combo while our freshmen get some experience.
