This could be the opportunity coach Tanner needs to revamp our roster the way he wants and get this program back on the right track. The two freshmen coming in seem to be quality players and with 4-6 more recruiting options in hand...we're going to see what kind of recruiting this staff can do. I think it goes beyond "needs" now, immediate would be a gift but who can come in and build a long term competitive team. It took a while for Golding, can Tanner use this opportunity to build us a winner.

One thing I have noticed over the past few years is our inability to integrate freshman classes into our playstyle. I wonder if we need a few years similar to the Jaylen Franklin, Jaren Lewis, Hayden Farquhar days when we knew we would be bad, but it was for the sake of getting these guys valuable minutes on the floor. I am not against transfers by any means, but onboarding freshmen has been pretty tough lately. I think our hopes of riding the momentum of our win against Texas didn't play out the way we hoped and we are in line for a soft rebuild.

We. Need. Money. To. Pay. The. Players.

I was told, by someone who I believes knows what he is talking about, that we need up to $500,000. in NIL money to be competitive in basketball in the WAC. This is all getting absurd. Where will it end?

"We will pay the price, but we will not count the cost."
I am concerned by the university's bravado as it pertains to athletics. Ambition is fine, however, ACU should not conference with SFA and Tarleton unless it plans to break this promise: "ACU is a vibrant, innovative, Christ-centered community that engages students in authentic spiritual and intellectual growth, equipping them to make a real difference in the world."
We cannot serve two masters. In my naive state, I don't see how an increase in money to individual student-athletes contributes to building a Christ-centered community.
NIL is self-centered. ACU was built on being other-centered.

It is certainly a serious challenge archsimon that needs to be taken prayerfully.

I find this conversation strange. I think the mentality is still that these players are not employees of the university, but they are. Or at least should be viewed as such in the current structure of college sports. For them to expect to get paid for their play is not outrageous or antithetical to the mission of the university. It is a reasonable expectation given the service they provide to the university. Further, we wouldn't call it selfish for an employee to advocate for their salary. The weird double standard toward college athletes doesn't make sense to me outside of the fact that it is not how things have been handled traditionally. $500,000 a year dedicated to the men's basketball team, which is allowed to have 15 players, would result in an average salary of $33,333.33. Both below the average income in Texas for a single adult and below the 25th percentile for a single Texas adult.
There is a lot more that goes into this conversation including the rising cost of college, the amount of money schools make off these players' hard work, the disparities between schools' donor bases, where NIL money comes from, NIL regulations, and much more. My point is not to say the transfer portal and NIL is perfect, but to imply that paying players is antithetical to the mission of ACU is a disappointing take. It is more about the type of people we are paying to play here than the fact we are paying.

Look at the roster of the mid-major programs on the rise. They are filled with transfers from top schools. As an example, Grand Canyon has 10 transfers from schools like Louisville, Oregon, Arizona State, UNLV.

Do away with athletic scholarships and just pay the players. Make them pay for their tuition from the money earned just like any other student. If they qualify for academic scholarships then that is less money out of pocket for them.

GCU pays their players a lot of NIL money apparently, or at least that is what I heard from some of our athletes. In my opinion, the value of an ACU degree in the fields I know about far exceeds the value of the same degree field at GCU, if they even have it. Admittedly not all athletes major in the fields where our graduates receive such value, but nonetheless, an ACU degree is rising in value.
I think of exceptional universities like some in the Ivy League and a handful of comparables to ACU and they do not aspire to compete above mid-major. So we need to find our happy place in that delicate balance of academics, athletics, and commitment to Christ-centered education. Lately I actually think we are doing a pretty good job with that task. We enjoyed beating GCU right here in Abilene this past season. Our history of Olympians, professionals, and leaders who became inspiring coaches is pretty remarkable. Our generous supporters are unusual. Personally I think we actually compete pretty well across the board. In general, those universities attempting to move up in reputation based only on athletics are not our equal in my humble opinion. Don't get me wrong, I truly enjoy ACU sports. Basketball actually enabled me to become a Wildcat out of high school, but compared to what I got in my education and blessed life, my "one and done" athletic life pales in comparison. I definitely want to see us improve in all we do, and certainly in athletics, but overall, ACU is well above a status we can be pleased with. Now, let's continue the University's history of improvement and accomplishment, always seeking to be better. It is something to be proud of.

Coach Tanner and Coach Henderson had an in-home visit with Quion Williams from Oklahoma St. Williams would be a very good get. He just finished his Sophomore year with the Cowboys and averaged 7.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game.
