Gibbens 6'3" 220 lb. Good size for a LB. Same school that Parker Mac is from. This is a great recruit/signing for ACU. He was the heart of the SV defense for 3 years - (and not too many players at SV get playing time as sophomores). Each year that team went deep into 6A playoffs (quarter finals as a junior, regionals the other two). While offense was good, the defense was better and Jack was a big reason for that. He will be another Sam Denmark - all over the field and lots of tackles. Local Smithson Valley family - between cousins and such, they have had several big time players on SV teams over the past 25 years - it runs in the family. You guys probably remember one of his older cousins - Joe Pawelek (pronounced pa ve lick). Big time Linebacker for Baylor. Played a couple of years in the NFL and then came back home to "the ranch" and is now back in the family business. Jack is of the same mold - grades will be good and he's not a kid that you will need to worry about getting into trouble. I was surprised to see this signing today - recent rumors had him going elsewhere. Jack's mom and Ms. Fbdad talked today and the decision came down to another great example of that "ACU difference". Go Wildcats!

I talked to several assistants after the show today and asked about running back. They were not particularly disappointed. In fact, they smiled and told me not to worry, that there is a plan. I'm guessing that they have a transfer or two in the pipeline.

David Robinett interviewed Coach Dorrel-
Felt it was really important to recruit the local kids. He listened to people in the area and area coaches. He heard the frustration of those players and programs being overlooked by ACU
They have a staff meeting tomorrow morning for 2018 and 2019.

If we want to become Abilene's team (which we clearly are not, yet), then we'll have to capture the hearts and imaginations of local people. Best way to do that is 1) recruit local kids; and 2) put a high quality product on the field and make it tons of fun!

Im trying to fight the urge to be worried about the RB situation, but the coaching staff sounds completely ok with where they are at. I will say I hope they give Gibbens a look at LB before moving him to the line, but id say his DE potential is more like and OLB. Corner seems to be the big win in this class followed by oline, both being desperately needed in terms of depth. Well done to the coaching staff.

Houston Hance, a TE from Abilene Cooper is trying to walk on. He was one of the local boys featured on the news for signing.

I was surprised even when Dorrel mentioned more defensive positions as his plans for bringing in more players. I don't think they are necessarily trying to leave out the RB, but listening to them describe what they are wanting and how they wish to utilize players, they have a bigger picture in mind. The way he described Qua-Shawn, his talents, how they can use him and the strengths he brings makes you know they are thinking more broadly and out of the box.

For you guys with more sources of info than I, how do the pundits see our class as opposed to other SLC schools?

For you guys with more sources of info than I, how do the pundits see our class as opposed to other SLC schools? 247 has us near the bottom of the SLC in their rankings. Their data is not terribly accurate though. They still have Brown on our list and Bird on Illinois State's list. Brown is more highly rated than Bird, so our overall rank will go down and Houston Baptist's will go up when/if they update. Sam Houston and SFA were the consensus winners in the recruiting war, per 247 anyway.

Looking at it we are closer to the middle than the bottom of the SLC. 74. Colorado State. 17-3 Star players 120. New Mexico 4-3 Star players 138-Sam Houston 5-3 Star Players 154-Lamar 0-3 Star Players 155-SFA 1-3 Star Player (SFA's rank has been adjusted and has dropped from their previous rank). 164-Houston Baptist 1-3 Star player 167-McNeese 1-3 Star player 174-ACU 0-3 Star players187-Northwestern St. 0-3 Star Players 214-UIW 1-3 Star Player 221-UCA 0-3 Star Players 228-Nichols 0-3 Star Players We don't play SELA next year, but since they are in the SLC: 215-SELA 0-3 Star Players

Quashawn Washington:
"I'm going to start on offense, then hopefully they'll see that I can hit and move me to defense," Washington said.
An all-around athlete who has also lettered in basketball and qualified for regional as a discus thrower and shot putter in track, Washington passed up an opportunity to throw at Ivy League member Brown to play football for the Wildcats.
"It was tough, but a lot of prayer and thought went into it," he said. "I spent countless nights staying up thinking about it and just finally came to the conclusion that I wanted to stay home and be with my little brothers and my family."

Wondered how he felt about the C-Back set up. Dorrel did mention Washington hitting and blocking.
