Melde is a redshirt junior, which means he’s a senior academically. Do we know for certain he’s coming back or if he plans to graduate and forego his final year of eligibility? Back during the season when he was banged up I heard he wa thinking seriously about graduating and giving up football. Could have been a passing thought or just a rumor.

Good question. I seem to remember hearing the same thing.

We still don't know exactly why, but all of our OL shrunk last year except for Weber who wasn't in our off season. So we are trying to play in D1 with guys that in some cases were weighing in the 260s. Perhaps there was an effort to get some of them in overall better shape - I don't know - but reports were that they did cardio and stretching and not much lifting. Maybe once or twice per week? There was not a game last year that we won the up front battle. (I did not see Incarnate Word) Even HBU. So when we bring in skinny JUCO linemen I can't help but groan. I like Dakota2 on film but he's only going to be a true soph. Melde at times was horrible plus he was hurt as was Dakota1. Weber was just okay but probably out of position. AndersonA was out all year and Etuk and Giddens are now playing defense and tight end respectively. Which leaves us with Crisp and Parmely and AndersonS and Ty Lovette among those with any experience at all. Doesn't breed a lot of confidence in me. So which of the redshirts is ready to step up? Bird? Ohlen? Mark? Hendrix? Gunnoe? It's not just about the starters. Do we have guys who can play 10-20 snaps per game with no drop off. On paper I don't see 10 D1 ready linemen. At least this year they will all be together for Spring and for off season. But to my mind we still need 2 big transfers - guys who are 3rd, 4th, or 5th year players. I can not argue with this. All valid points. I guess the good news is that we feel like we have more to choose from this year, and more development time from each. Hopefully we’ll find five good starters and put together a good unit. I also keep forgetting about Crisp. I liked what I saw when he was in the game. Has all the raw tools you look for. Just needed or still needs some strength and refining. Interested to see what he brings next year.

Preston, Lorenz, Fontenot who is the Arkansas St grad transfer. There are a few others, but those seem to be the top 3

I think the competition and working together will bring about a lot of improvements. I just hope that they focus on strength during the off season. As for Crisp, he has everything he needs to be good except experience. If he improves this year as much as last year, he will be ready to play an important role IMHO. I remember meeting Lovette at the HBU game last season. He is impressive. I think he will help.

So I've expressed my feelings on the OL which I give a midterm grade of C. Not sure either will be ready to start by the Baylor game. QB: Could compete for starting role. I think he's at least a high quality backup. B+ WR/TE: Justice should step in nicely for Grant and Whitley. Given Ennis's lack of production I really like both Bruner and Ventura-Cortes. A RB: McKnight appears to have the pedigree. Fills a big need but not too much recent evidence. B+
DL: We are pretty good 2-deep right now. Miller seems to be a good addition while Nyandika may be a bit of a project. B DB: Great job here. Have a need and fill it with quality. A LB: Lechman could be the gem of the class. A
Overall Midterm grade: B+

Speaking of coveted possible transfers,... 247sports.com/college/texas/Bolt/Texas-veteran-lineman-Jake-McMillon-goes-through-Senior-Night-111007157x AUSTIN – Jake McMillon has one year of eligibility remaining at Texas, but the two-year starter along the offensive line might not be back for the 2018 season. McMillon, a fourth-year junior from Abilene, participated in Senior Night along with the other Longhorns who are playing their final home game on Friday night against Texas Tech. While the school has made no official announcement that McMillon will be moving on following the season, underclassmen who have participated in Senior Night are typically those who’ve made the decision to move on from football at the end of the season.

McCrary coming out of high school was the 101st best Atlete in the nation and also the 150th best player in Texas. He had 11 offers with 10 being FBS and the other being Yale. Had over 5,600 yards of total offense and 3,900 rushing yards in HS.

Does ACU have to "sign" a transfer from a 4-year school?
It appears that McCrary could have 2 years left. He played for Cal in 2015 and 2016, but is not listed as a participant in any games in 2017. It would appear that the new HC and staff at Cal did not have any plans for him.

As long as we are throwing out interesting people with ACU ties (like McMillon), let me throw out a name that I have always thought would fit in well at ACU -- JC Chalk. Chalk is the son of ACU grad and former basketball letterman, John Chalk and the grandson of John Allen Chalk. His Mom is ACU grad Jackie Stalling Chalk, one of the 4 daughters of long-time football coach Gene Stallings -- all four daughters attended ACU and married ACU alums! And, Chalks have a daughter who is currently a student at ACU
Chalk is listed a 6-3, 250 tight end for Clemson. He prepped at Argyle HS and redshirted last year at Clemson, where Dabo Swinney was a former player for Coach Stallings at Alabama. Chalk is not listed on the depth chart (they list 3 tight ends), but he has still played in 9 games and has 2 catches in this, his RS freshman season.
I don't think there is any interest in his transferring to ACU and I don't want to suggest there is any way he will do so, I have always found it interesting the many athletes with ACU ties who are competing for big-time programs all over the country.

I have heard rumors that McMillon, if he indeed does transfer, will be going to another school in Texas, a school in the Big 12
