This thread is to comment on recruiting by our conference opponents - mainly football but any other noteworthy recruits as well.
I'll start. QB Chason Virgil is transferring from Fresno State to SLU. He was replaced as the Bulldog's starter 3 games into last season. Will have 2 years of eligibility. Despite the fact that the Lions ran all over us last year, their QB play wasn't very good so this appears to be a upgrade.

I agree the passing game was less than spectacular, but depending on what they want their offensive identity to be, I don't know that he steps in right away. Their other QB was a South Carolina transfer.

Over the break I was doing some track and field roster research on the other SLC schools and came across a fantastic addition for a SLC school. UNO is one of the bottom-feeder schools in the SLC in track and field -- their women scored exactly 1 point at the SLC outdoor meet last year. But, they usually have 1-2 really good kids. Their heptathlete, Farydah Inoussa, won the indoor pentathlon at conference last winter, then was injured by the time that outdoor conference rolled around and did not compete. Now, they have signed a superb international addition -- Arina Kleshchukova, from Kyrgyzstan (yes, I did have to look up the correct spelling of her home country). On the most reliable international track database -- all-athletics.com -- I found some terrific PR times, a 2:05.7 in the 800 and 4:28 in the 1500. Both of those times would be winning times in the SLC.
Since UNO will not have any bearing on the team scoring at the SLC meet, the key here is that Kleshchukova takes away points from our primary championship competition (SHSU and SFA), while not cutting too much into ACU potential points. It will be interesting to see how she competes once the season actually rolls around.

I did a quick summary of early signees around the SLC just to see where we stack up activity-wise. I only know of 2 drop down transfers. They aren't really counted until they start classes. UIW did not sign anyone early for obvious reasons.
ACU 12 JUCO 1 Transfer 13 total SFA 4 JUCO 7 HS 11 total UCA 5 JUCO 6 HS 11 total SLA 6 JUCO 3 HS 1 Transfer 10 total HBU 1 JUCO 7 HS 8 total Nicholls 2 JUCO 5 HS 7 total NWST 4 JUCO 4 total SHSU 1 JUCO 3 HS 4 total McNeese 2 JUCO 2 total
I'm not sure that I can draw any conclusions about SLC signings until after Feb 7 but I do have some observations. 1. ACU coaches are really working hard to rebuild this roster by signing guys from Texas to Kansas to California to Washington. No HS signings suggests to me that they are going after FBS caliber HS signings in February. I still wonder if there will be another transfer or two announced. 2. Considering their losses to graduation, I'm betting on a bunch of transfers at SHSU. They have a reputation as a destination for drop-downs. 3. The HS guys that signed were almost all local relative to the university that signed them. I wish we could get to that point except most other SLC schools are in better recruiting locales. 4. I think that it's clear that the Cats will have a monster class this year: 26-28 scholarship guys. Most of the other schools should have 17-19 recruits.
Can't wait until Feb 7.

SFA killed it, particularly along the D Line and at DB. They will wind up with the top ranked class in the SLC with a combination of freshmen and FBS drop downs. I know. The Jacks kill it every year and then fizzle on the field. That’s Been true enough, although it was under a different coaching staff. This is the second year in a row the current staff has recruited a top 10 class nationally and we have yet to see if they can develop the talent they have on campus. This is a program to watch. 247sports.com/college/sfasu/Season/2020-Football/Commits/

Adding freshmen three-star Caleb Fox (6'3 305) and Branard Wright (6'3 315) gives them more options on every play. SFA has always been strong at the LOS but that has now amplified quite a bit. At the skill positions, SFA keeps adding good receivers like Waydale Jones (6'4) that Carthel announced yesterday as a redshirt junior transfer from Wake Forest. He has a better than average catch radius. The last thing to note is the size of the SFA freshmen secondary. All four recruits are 6-foot or better (at least on paper). Wright is one of the most widely recruited players to sign with a FCS school this year. Even if they weren’t “committable” offers, he was offered by SEC powers such as Alabama and Georgia as well as Clemson. While Clemson might have viewed him as a backup in case their top targets didn’t sign with them, he was the top DT target for FBS schools like North Texas,

SFA adds Fox and Wright this season, to Carl Williams from last year, plus two returning seniors (Rayshad Nichols and Larran Cox) at DT. By my unofficial count, the Jacks also have 10 guys (fresh, soph, or redshirts) on their last year's roster that are listed as DEs, and they are adding Quinton Owens (6'3 225) from Carthage to that position group. So I guess someone is redshirting? Or leaving?

Hero Sports ranking of the Top 50 recruiting classes and Top 300 recruits came out yesterday. herosports.com/fcs/football-2020-recruiting-top-50-fcs-team-rankings-ajajherosports.com/fcs/football-2020-recruiting-top-300-fcs-signees-rankings-ajajIt will be interesting to see if recruiting rank predicts on the field success in the Southland and nationally. Over the next several years. Historically 3 year average recruiting rank has been a very good predictor of end of the season rank. SFA has now finished atop the SLC for the past two years. If they do well next year one would expect them to be playoff bound. This year their recruits will be sophomores, redshirt and incoming freshmen so the on the field impact may not show up until 2021. Nationally only 2 teams have finished in the top 10 for the past three years— NDSU and James Madison. Three additional teams -SFA, Delaware and Villanova - have finished in the top 10 for the past two years. UCA is the only other team from the SLC that has finished in the top 10 once in the past three years. They placed 9th in 2018 and just outside the top 10 this year at 12th. Rankings only include HS players. We don’t know the effect the transfer portal will have on the predictive value of recruiting rank. It’s too new to say one way or the other. My hunch transfers will become a major factor in on the field performance. It’s worth noting that at the FBS level, 3 of the 4 teams playing for the national championship fielded transfer Quarterbacks, as did one of the two FCS finalists.
