A fun bit of Chiefs history. During their inaugural season as the Dallas Texans in 1960, Lamar Hunt scheduled several “barnstorming” preseason games around the country. From what I have read, the 3rd game was at Shotwell stadium against the New York Titans, who would become the Jets.

Wow, I think that I know a lot of Abilene sports trivia, but that one is new to me. Lamar Hunt was an owner's owner -- he always provided what his coaches needed to be successful, but he never wanted to hog the limelight (in contrast to most other NFL owners these days).

I think Sammy Baugh was the HC for the Titans that year, so playing in Abilene was a good idea. This was also before the “Abilene Public Schools Stadium was named Shotwell. The game was hosted by the West Texas Shriners.
