Good to see them scheduling tough games. They are still playing their independent WAC schedule starting next year as far as I know. I wonder if we schedule any OOC games in the near future? Or have we? I honestly have forgatten.

Or have we? I honestly have forgatten. We haven’t announced any scheduled games with Tarleton. We have multiple openings in our schedule over the next few years as a result of the Southland Conference shift from a nine game conference schedule to eight games beginning in 2021 (or is it 2022?). I’m hopeful we pick up a home-away series against another FCS team rather than booking more money games against FBS schools to fill out our schedule. Tarleton would be a natural opponent.

oscar--why would you rather we play vs Tarleton instead of a money game?

oscar--why would you rather we play vs Tarleton instead of a money game? There is less than a 5% chance of winning a money game, probably even less against a school like TAMU. Playing two money games a year greatly increases the probability of two losses on our record before we even begin conference play and not playing OOC FCS games make it difficult for the playoff committee to judge our SOS.

The only problem is that it will be one more purple team to play

Would it help or hurt to play FBS teams like Rice or especially UTEP that we might be able to squeak out a win against? Also, I would like to see us play Tech occasionally. A good West Texas challenge.

A good West Texas challenge. FCS Playoffs primarily look at DI wins, and then SOS based on that. A win against a DII, DIII or NAIA does not count at all. Rice and UTEP would be good wins because they are generally higher ranked than really bad FSC teams. Conference ranking can also play a part in SOS. The MVFC is generally the highest ranked FCS confernce, so if you had an FCS OOC game against one of those opponenets it will probably be higher than an FCS OOC opponent from the SWAC. STill, quality DI wins on your schedule is what you want over-all. I think many of us still want the higher money FBS games because they do help football and athletic budgets over-all, but we are wanting to see better FCS OOC games as well for quaility DI games that are more winnable.

When we go to 8 conference games the perfect schedule imo would be a money FBS game and two OOC FCS games against good teams. Scheduling the FCS games is a lot easier said than done though. Playing teams like Southern Utah and Prarie View A&M is a good start.

I think a home and home rivalry have against ”Tarketon” 😂 would draw practically the biggest crowds of the year for both schools as well as be a long term scheduling option. Face it, Tarleton is likely to end up in the SLC and I, for one am all for it.

Playing teams like Southern Utah and Prarie View A&M is a good start. IT’s hard when you try to schedule one off games without a return and not much money to pay the team you want to play at your shop. Return games are a little easier to schedule, especially for teams in conferences like the Big Sky that are relatively isolated geographically.

Tarleton or $500K money game vs. TA&M. I wonder what the players and AD (athletic director) would choose? One thing that confuses me (OK lots of things confuse me) is why we are scheduling these games in November before our playoff run. Both Southern Utah this year and A&M in 2023 are in mid-November. (A&M may not want a rematch after this year

(A&M may not want a rematch after this year I seriously doubt coaches would vote to play a second money game. Coaches want to play for championships, and a second game against a Miss State or TAMU hurts our chances of reaching that goal. I once had a student in one of my courses who was missing a lot of class sessions. When I talked with her about her absences she told me she had to work to pay her tuition. I told her i could appreciate her situation but if she flunked the classes she was working to pay the tuition for it kind of defeated the purpose. The money is good and I know we need it but if it hurts our chances of achieving program goals, it seems to defeat the purpose. At least that’s how I see it.

Face it, Tarleton is likely to end up in the SLC and I, for one am all for it. Tarleton is a good home & away option for us similar to PVAM. The crowds would indeed be interesting. I still wish we could set up a series with NAU or Weber, but also agree that SUU is a good step. The Big Sky offers good competition that could lift our SOS.
