Good start to the season and congrats to Julie and team! Hope they are going deep in their bench and looking good against an 11-17 Division 3 team. Excited and intrigued to see how they play against A&M. It’s always interesting how deceptive acu sports is about hiding the level of competition they are playing. All the best!

Nobody has been "deceptive" about the level of competition. We know Howard Payne. The level of competition has been discussed here and some think it's too easy. Some think it's the best way to get our new players acclimated. The schedule had lots of challenges with all the covid cancellations and protocols. A&M will certainly be a huge step up. We may get smashed. It's happened before but I'm glad we've got more depth than in prior years. Maybe we'll step up our game and surprise even the naysayers.

Scheduling home games is a nightmare. Unless you can schedule a home and home with a mid-major, it’s costly to bring them in to Abilene. So playing the small schools is okay. HPU has come to town almost every year so we have a good relationship with them.
I was at the game and there appeared to be some good stuff HPU is a quick, scrappy bunch who played very up-tempo which I think was good for us. Overall we are just too long for them. They had no answer for Alyssa. Paige got too deep in the corner a couple of times and got trapped and Hannah needs to work on protecting the ball. Katie and Taylor look really good. Alice is surprising. Got lost in the offense several times but she’s going to be a nice player. Sarah, to me, stood out for her defense. She never seemed to be out of position. Didn’t get too many offensive opportunities.
If we can shoot like last night, we’ll be just fine. 15 threes is pretty good.

Will be interesting to see how deep Julie's bench is this season. On paper it appears we have a number of girls who can contribute - all four freshman included.

I hate it when we get trapped in the corner (or the side,) as we were several times. Not sure what the play was that did not develop. Ball movement was sometimes a bit slow. Alyssa put on a show and I hope she can do as well against a 6'5" girl. I was really impressed with the good feeling all of them, especially Sarah as you mention, had for their defensive assignments. We do get fooled occasionally with the trap-over drive to the hoop but HBU did not have the height to take advantage of it -- plus good movement of others in the back row stopped them most of the time. The shooting exhibition was extraordinary.

Also, HPU should be given credit. They were well coached and were very energetic. Hard to compete when you don't match up well. But I was surprised with their tenacity. I was surprised with a lot of the calls. Not sure the officials were quite as adept as our strong women's team, but I liked the way our girls handled it. I only saw one show of frustration at a bad call.

RC, I thought the new girls were a bit tentative in running the offense. Game speed is different from practice for sure. Add Makayla to the starters and this is a good looking team. Paige can darn sure shoot the three so she will be in the rotation as will Sarah. Katie has the poise to play 3 positions and Taylor showed me that she is as good as we thought she was when she was the first of this class to commit. In my opinion, these nine girls will play the bulk of the minutes this year.

I wonder if we will speed up on defense as well, with this many fresh legs able to sub in? I did not see much full court press (other than the reactionary press from a lose ball or bad pass.) I wonder how good they could be if they played frantic defense? Watching coach Julie, it seemed she was encouraging the standard hands up, move the body and cover everyone type defense -- sort of the standard ploy. However, a signaled all out press occasionally can be a major disruption and unexpected move. I wonder if we could do that with such a large number of possible rotations and subs? With the exception of two or three players it seemed we could risk some fouling out. I thought HPU pressed quickly when given the chance, and for the most part all they risked was the three point shot, which we were nailing. Don't get me wrong, our defense was great, but it was fairly predictable as well as effective -- not bad actually. I just like the surprise of traps. Holding anyone to 45 points is pretty good D so maybe I am all wet.

That’s a couple of quick 6-footers with long arms. They only tried it twice last night. No point in using it against an overmatched team. Of course, Julie’s philosophy is out scoring folks - threes and layups are the only “approved” shots. Her teams lead the conference in scoring virtually very year. At the same time, they do play a very effective match up zone with back side help.

I was talking more of the deception of acusports.com, ACUWBB social media, and even the local media. Not the experts and followers who are on here. I guess that’s just good media these days haha. Nothing in the article about it being Division III or the publications. I understand the schedule complications of COVID, but it seems similar in years past. It would be better to play Division II and III schools that are more talented and more of a powerhouse in their respective divisions. Such as UMHB or UTD for local Division III or LCU and WTAMU for local Division II. Would think it would look look better and be better to play championship mentality teams. All in all...took care of business and they will do well.

We can call those teams you’ve mentioned, but many times they play the D3s and NAIA teams to get the win and prepare and build confidence for their season. I agree that I would love to see LCU or WT or the likes on the schedule, but sometimes it’s you get who you get so you’re not just scrimmaging your team, but rather getting different looks on offense and defense so you can learn and prepare from tape for this year.
