The hits just keep on coming. Any ideas why we are losing so many?

Kam Hill opted out for this season and I don't know if that put him in a bad light with the coaching staff. Another poster on the board mentioned a few weeks ago that the decision was the coaches for Tumblesen not to return. I know when he came to ACU 2 years ago he was a walkon kid. I guess he did not get a schollie and might be looking to play his "bonus" season somewhere on scholarship.

Why are people transferring, because I think the portal encourages players to do that. Honestly, I do. When a player opts out, like Hill did, he is basically no longer with the team. He was not around the team in any capacity this year. The writing was already on the wall.
The only 2 guys that we lost that truly hurt were Gibbens, Hohenstein and Parmelly. Yes, McConnell was a starter, and Parker started at times at LB, but those are not significant loses imo. Hill was never coming back, so I saw him as a loss over the summer, not one for 2021

Why do I feel that the overall trajectory of ACU football is not headed in the direction that any of us expected 2-3 years ago? Next question, how long are we satisfied with a middling program? Do we write it off and give passes because of transition? Conference unknowns...etc? I for one believe the next few years are huge for the future trajectory of the ACU football program as a whole. Or maybe we are just a basketball school now. The transfer portal encourages unhappy players to transfer, but it's obvious if you look around the country that the successful programs don't lose many kids, unless they're unhappy with playing time.

I think somebody made a listing of who entered the portal in our conference, but I have not seen one in a while. Would be interesting to see that updated and some kind of qualification for how impactful the loss is. If a program loses 10 players but they were all third string guys that never played, there is no real impact. Then there is HBU that looks to have lost a ton.
Might also be interesting to see on a macro level where the transfers go. Like how many of the FCS portal guys end up at FBS schools and vice versa. If the trend is FCS guys moving up, there is really not much a school will be able to do to stop that. If a school has portal guys ending up at different FCS programs, then it might point out an issue at that school specifically.
This portal really will make college football more volatile as guys can move around quickly.

Transfer portal aside I don’t believe anyone is satisfied with where the program is at the moment. That said, Dorrel will get at least one more season to turn the program around. He didn’t receive a contract extension though and as the buy out becomes reasonable or the present contract ends I would expect a change if results don’t improve.

I will be honest, I fell the same way. A few years back I was really encouraged that we were on our way to the top of the conference but clearly that seems to have stalled. I am not smart enough to say why but it sure does seem like we don't have the talent we used to even in the d2 days. For example, ACU sent out a listing of all ACU players that have made it to the NFL. In the late d2 days there was a listing of like 6 guys from Manning, Knox, Gates, West, Scott, (Rams RB) etc. What was shocking to me is how long of a drought we have had since we had a guy make it to the show. I know several of those guys made it to ACU under standards that they would no longer qualify under as a D1 school, but the flip side says that now that we are D1, we should be able to recruit different guys that have the potential to be NFL caliber without the academic exceptions. As a whole, I assume FCS football puts more guys in the pros than D2 does, so we are competing in an overall more talent rich division, but trying to do that with less NFL grade talent. We have to say that is exactly why we have not had a winning season in a while. I know there has been lots of talk about scheme on here and if we do to many bubble screens or corners play with too much cushion, or QB play is not good enough, but in the end it looks like we just have not had the horses to compete the last few years. Seeing our Anthony go and light things up at LA Tech hurts a bit and really shows what he might be able to do with a team that has the same talent as the opponent. Not saying it is hopeless or that I won't continue to follow the Cats, but I do wish that we could find a way to pick up our recruiting. EDIT - Found a tracker in July 2020 that says NFL has 287 former FCS guys and 90 former D2 guys, so almost 300% more.

SFA has announced that they are looking for one spring game to cap spring training. I wonder if we will go down that path as well. SFA played 10 games this fall.

This thread more active than the "Positive things from this team in 2020" thread. That says it all.

Recruiting. Recruiting seems up a notch this year but there is still a lot of room for improvement. I’m probably just grumpy based on a recent personal experience, so forgive me in advance.
Back early last fall I referred a DB from one of the best Hs football programs in Indiana. His dad played an injury shortened career for ACU. Both parents are ACU Alums. He was receiving a lot of interest from FBS programs and eventually got a couple of offers. He eventually signed with FBS Northern Illinois from the MAC. ACU never offered or as far as I can tell even expressed interest.
I’m certainly not qualified enough to say whether he was or was not a Legit D1 player. Maybe we were right to pass. Still, programs at a level above ours saw something while we shrugged off what would have been an easy get.
Maybe this is an anomaly. Maybe his info just fell between the cracks as we shifted responsibility for recruiting. Or maybe it serves as an example of why we have come up short in recruiting the past few years. Rant over. Carry on.

Personally, I think we have been getting whipped in recruiting the last few years. I'm hoping that is changing.

The grandson of a solid ACU family is an All-Star player in Texas HS football, but he is not coming to ACU. Maybe it is because he is target material for top tier FBS schools (and he is) but I would love to have a program that attracted such high level talent.

I seem to recall another one like that a few years back, was even a local kid but Austin came-a-callin.... I keep dreaming though.
