Here is to hope for improvement, but like Bogey, my expectations are low. Actually it sure seems like a steep uphill road ahead. Losers are not exactly the best recruiters, so getting the talent we need had to be a huge hurdle. Apparently we have a new OL so some hard work has gone into getting new players. If the comments we read are accurate, we have improved the talent factor in several positions. That means it comes down to execution and coaching and are we improving more rapidly than our competition? That is the big unknown and why there is anxiety about the coming season. Would 4 wins be progress? Well, perhaps in absolute terms but I think we need a winning season to ease the worry factor.

Bumped into Josh Lamberson yesterday and he gave me a little peek at the offense for the fall. All five OL will be new. Reese Moore will start at left tackle, of course. But Derrick Simmons will very likely start at right tackle. Not only is he huge, but Josh says he is very, very athletic. Collin James will be the center. They love his size and he can get leverage after the snap better than anyone. Then he said that there are lots of candidates for the two guard positions. He mentioned Knox, Marshall, Ty Smith, Tate and a couple of the new guys. He was almost giddy about the OL talent and depth. I asked him if the coaching change helps. He didn’t answer but he did smile. He also indicated that WR is going to be good and singled out Clark, Davion Johnson, Denver Holman, Spadone and Dax. Also very high on the tight ends and running backs. Lots of depth at both positions. More than at any time since he’s been here. He also thinks that Peyton and Stone are going to be special Well, we’ll see what happens, I guess but I sure like the optimism. Would you ever expect to hear him say something negative?

Probably not. But at least we have some idea of who might be in the rotation in the fall.

When you add Tillman, James and Simmons there will be roughly 20 OL on the roster. Simmons told me there were either 21 or 22 working out together.
By the way, in an earlier post I said that Colin James might start at center but I misspoke. Lambo actually was talking about C J Tillman.

Interesting that Dorrel said the qb position is still wide open. Stone Earle must be showing some really good stuff.

He also mentioned RB will be a competition with Dobbins and Tyrese White. Also said they're not going to move guys around on the OL (whoever’s at LG stays at LG, etc) during fall camp to build as much continuity as possible.

Interesting that Dorrel said the qb position is still wide open. Stone Earle must be showing some really good stuff. I to am hopefully optimistic about the upcoming football season. I'm still concerned about play calling and lack of in game adjustments. I truly believe of the past couple seasons of Coach Dorrel's tenure we've had both the players & team capable of better results than 5 & 7 & 1 & 5. Me personally I won't be happy to see UTPB run up and down the field between the tackles like Angelo State, and after the game have the Coach say our team was flat played without energy. Coaches must devise game plans, call plays/defensive schemes that put players in place to succeed and at the same time inspire their players to play at their peak ability. Watching the ACU football team's regression from our 2018 season 6 & 5 record high-water mark, I'm concerned the elephant in the room starts with the Head Coach and trickles down to the staff. At some point the Head Coach will need to take ownership for the results of the coaching staff and of the team. Correct me if I'm wrong, all current starting players on this season's roster are this staff's recruits...so lets hope we have the correct players on the bus and in right seat. i pilfered the right seat on the bus comment from a Nick Saben speech i enjoyed.

I thought CJ Tillman was a D lineman? Have they moved him to C?

No. It is my fault. I got confused when Lambo said that CJ (Collin James) would likely be the starting center and I thought he meant CJ (Tillman). Tillman is indeed a DT.

So, our newly rebuilt OL will tentatively look something like this….
LT. Reese Moore, 6’6 278 tr. Texas G. Jaron Marshal, 6’3 295 So Wyatt Tate, 6’5 301 So Ty Smith, 6’5 290 RFr Truett Knox 6’2 290 Jr Tr Ok State
RT. Derek Simmons 6’5 320 So
Depending on who winds up starting at guard this could be a very tall group of linemen

Plus C Collin James 6’2 280+
I also think Mitch Melrose @ 6’6 and Zach Terry @ 6’6 will play quite a bit.
These are some big dudes. Let’s hope they can play a little.
