Here is what the defense looks like right now. I have added a year to everyone's eligibility, as we don't know who will use the extra year or not.
DE: Paup- Sr Obadeyi- Jr Kad. Johnson- Jr (played both DE and DT) Marq. Brown- Jr D. Hart- Soph Herrold- RFr Cam. Byron- RFr Tyrin Bradley- Fr
Gone from the Roster: Freeny Previlon
DT: Titre- Sr W. Morgan- Jr Thielen- RSoph Dre Jones- Jr Schultz- Sr Lozano- Soph Eades Fr
Gone from the Roster: Lak. Jones Mich. Gayden
LB: Nwankwo- Jr J. Parker- Sr Hargrove- Sr J. James- Sr Gr. Green- Sr C. Sims- Jr G. Graham- RSoph Schwinn- Soph John Brannon- Sr Kyle Pointer- Fr Cirby Coheley- Fr
Gone from the Roster: Gibbens Kier Norman
CB: Stapp- Jr Satterfield- Soph Tr. Anderson- Jr Duah- Sr Don. Johnson- Jr Egbo- Jr
Gone from the Roster: K. Richardson McKnight Ty Taylor
S: Sh. Washington Sr. Bullock- Sr Kam Stokes- Soph Goffney- Sr Brae. Hill- Jr Moffett- RFr Max Gayden- RFr Luke Dillingham- Fr
Gone from the roster: Byr. Robinson
Overall Outlook- Still lots of work needs to be done on this side of the ball. The DE spot has pretty solid depth. Biggest need is an impact rusher. We have to be able to get the QB. At DT, Titre and Morgan at times were pretty good. Thielen came out of nowhere and provided some depth. Biggest thing this unit needs is some bulk, and they appear to be trying to add that. We need at least 1, maybe 2 guys over 300 lbs. LB is a big concern right now. We lose the leader of not just this unit, but our team in Gibbens. I'll be interested to see how things shake down with Nwankwo and Brannon. I do think the staff will add another transfer to this group. CB seems to be our deepest part of our defense. The top 3 in Stapp, Satterfield and Anderson performed well. Definitely need depth and the staff offered to 3-star corners last week. Safety is in pretty good shape. Washington, Bullock and Stokes all started at times. We need a playmaker on the back end of our defense. Dillingham could be that guy down the road. The staff is also engaged in the transfer market.
On a different note, I have been given no indication that Q. Washington or Kam Hill will be back on the team. So for now, let's not include them in any discussions for 2021.

So the two new recruits at safety are Luke Dillingham 6'2" 195 who runs a 4.41 40 and Jamal Marshall 5'11" 175 who runs a 4.5 40. Current safeties are Shelby Washington 6'1" 187 who runs a 4.63 40 and Brian Bullock 5'11" 196 (couldn't find a 40 time but at times looked very slow last year). Dillingham has serious speed (faster than Stapp for a 40 time) and could be a kick returner. I think we have upgraded this position.

Trey Adams (transfer from Northern Colorado) was RS his Freshman year and then received a medical RS in 2019. Played in 2018 at DB but was moved to WR in 2020. Don't see any stats on him in 2020. Ran a 4.78 40 out of HS. We are adding depth at safety but the real ringer in my opinion in this safety group is true freshman Luke Dillingham. 6'2" 195 who runs a 4.41 40. Anxious to see him play.

Here's a few clips of Adams playing for Northern Colorado. He makes a lot of tackles in space. All of this looks like it will translate to the field, especially on special teams. I agree that it will be good to see what Dillingham can do.

So the question is, how many scholarships does ACU have left to give? A quick FCS recap on the way scholarships work.
1. FCS teams have 63 scholarships to give
2. Teams can give out the scholarships any way they want to get to 85 players, meaning some can be given full and some can be partial scholarships
3. Due to the COVID year, Seniors that return do NOT count. So, in ACU's case, they have 6 seniors that returned. If they have the money available, that can put them at 91 players that could be on scholarship.
So, where does ACU stand? I have them at 78 scholarship players on the roster. Does that mean that ACU has 13 scholarships available. Probably not. The bigger question is ACU at the full limit of 85? That I am not sure about. So, my guess is, and this is only a guess, is that ACU has 5-7 scholarships (full or partial) to give out. Yes, I realize that if we only have 5 scholarships available, that would put us at 83. I'm hopeful, but not certain that ACU has the full allotment of scholarships at their disposal

We need at least 2 OL who are ready to play. To my way of thinking we need OL more than DB's even though "players" are welcome at any position.

Really like the way this young man has a nose for the ball -- closing speed on RBs in the open field and his confidence as the last line of defense.

Watching SHSU play JMU and it seemed to me that the key to their defense is big ole #92. At 6'5 325 he has to be doubled on every play. That leaves the ends (who are very good) pretty much going 1 on 1 the whole game. He is at a different level from most FCS players. The JMU QB exploited their secondary but took a beating and finally had to leave the game. All that to say we need a strong pass rush. Makes your secondary look better than it really is.

In light of Cattitudes post--what do we have at DT to cause havoc? Morgan at 255 (is that still right?) and Titre at 270 seem a little light to be effective. Next up is Lozano at 295 (but he wasn't on the spring roster, is he still on the team?) and then who??? Thielen was somewhat effective and is now at 295 but we've moved him to the OL. Seems we don't value big guys at DT where our successful competitors do. No offers out to specifically DT's (although we have 2 hybrid offers to DE/DT's). This is an area that I think still exhibits a D2 recruiting mindset. Maybe I'm wrong and don't understand what our scheme demands.

This is an area that I think still exhibits a D2 recruiting mindset. Maybe I'm wrong and don't understand what our scheme demands. One thing for sure, the roster weights are not even close. Thielen, who is still listed as a 249 lb DE moves to the OL and, eureka, he grows to 295 virtually overnight. I have seen the DTs up close and personal. So here are the Cap'n's estimated weights (roster>estimate): Gayden 263>280+; Johnson 245>260+; Jones 263>280+; Morgan 255>285+; Schultz 260>280+; Titre 270>285+. So these guys are not massive. But we are not putting a bunch of 250 pounders out there either. Titre in particular looked bigger and faster in the Spring game. Sure would be nice to have a really big guy in the middle. South Dakota is in the finals and their interior d-line listed weights are 280,285,265,290,285,286. Who knows if those are right but seems to be about the size of our guys if my estimates are on point.

Sam Houston, on the other hand, is quite a bit bigger with Moscaro (300) and Mustin (325). Plus they have 2 340+ starting OL. They are loaded with seniors and I suspect that they will all be back next fall unless they take off to prepare for the draft and avoid injury. Moscaro will be a 6th year if he returns this fall...

Sam Houston also plays a 3-4 defense, whereas we play a 4-3. In a 3-4, you want bigger bodies so your linebackers and safeties flow to the ball
