mavsman53 said if people weren't added to the roster by the middle of this week it would be cause for concern. Well, it's the end of the week and no additions, updates, news from official sources. NOTHING. SHOULD THIS BE A CAUSE FOR CONCERN?

I stand corrected.--NEWS FLASH!! A tweet from ACU Sports--Saturdays are for scrimmages. 3 scrimmages are open to the public, August 14, 21, 28. "No talking to ACU football personnel." A beginning!!

I plan on attending. I'm hoping they have a roster with numbers either on the website by later today or a handout for fans.

Better late then never, maybe they needed to see what they had at each position in camp before they could write a decent preview.

Thrilled to see the Linebacker preview on ACUsports.com. We will be rather short on starting experience at LB, but still some potential here:
-Returnees: Hunter Kier (5 starts and 34 tackles in 2 seasons); Tory Hargrove (6 starts and 31 tackles in 2 seasons); Greg Green (no starts, 29 tackles and 5 sacks in 3 seasons); and Chike Nwankwo (1 start and 26 tackles in 2020 after transfer from Rutgers). There are 3 other returnees on the roster who are not mentioned in this preview --- Joshua James (who does have 9 starts in his 3 years at ACU); Abe Schwinn, and Zeke Lott.
-Transfers: John Brannnon (18 tackles in 3 seasons at Texas State) and Trey Adams (14 tackles as a DB at Northern Colorado in 2019 - UNC did not play at all in 2020). Adams played at DB at UNC, so the article confirms that he has been moved to LB.
-Freshmen: Cirby Coheley, Kyle Pointer and Ethan Taite. What they all have in common is that they are taller and rangier than ACU's LB recruits in the last few years. Coheley is close to the same size that Jack Gibbens was coming out of HS.
I look forward to other previews over the coming months.

How do we feel about our LB corps? I looked at the current posted roster and found 15 LB's listed. Nine LB's were mentioned in the write up. Two who were not mentioned are Joshua James and Abe Schwinn and then 4 freshman "walk ons" I believe. My concern with starters and depth is our size. I've always felt that LB is a position in which height and weight really matter. Of our returners, Kier is 5"10", Green 5'8", Hargrove 5'9" and newcomer Adams is 5'10". Nwankwo is 6'1" and Brannon is 6'1". Of all these players the only ones with "real weight" are Nwankwo at 230 and Brannon at 245. What encourages me is that the 3 freshmen we recruited are all taller than what we have returning. Coheley is 6'4", Pointer is 6'3", and Taite is 6'2". They are all relatively light but a year of weight training should put some additional pounds on them. As we play better opponents, I would expect to see 6'5" and taller TE's and RB's that are well into the 210-220 lb range. Our smallish LB's will be challenged but hoping they can compete. I'll be cheering them on. Go Cats.

Sorry, I got a phone call in the middle of my post and didn't hit send until after trackfan's post. Much of the same info and impressions. Where are Schwinn, Lott and James?

Bogey, all 3 that you mentioned are walk-ons. Doesn't mean that they won't play from time to time, but they likely aren't being counted on a lot.
I expect in these write-ups, that is what we will be getting. Returning players and newcomers. I do wish there was a bit more to these than what we got yesterday. Tell us who is starting, who is pushing for playing time, etc. Not trying to sound negative, but to me, this didn't tell me much that I didn't already know.

I agree with you. I had hoped Schwinn would push for playing time in his 2nd year here. He walked on at Arizona State and they had some good things to say about him. His tapes looked good so maybe he can be a player for us. Special teams?

I am wondering in this day and age, how much strength and weight gains guys get when they first get to college. I know that any high school worth anything theses days has pretty advanced weight training programs and most guys start working out year round early in high school. I know there used to be a lot of stories where guys would finally hit the weight room when they got to college and really build up in a single off season. With today's athletes being more advanced as younger ages, I wonder if we still see dramatic jumps once they enter the college workout program? I am sure guys still get stronger but do we still see huge gains rapidly?
When I got to ACU as a recruit 20+ years ago (damn I am getting old), I had been hitting the weight room pretty hard since middle school and had full summer workout programs every summer but I knew a lot of others who had not. I certainly got stronger in college (I took my bench from about 315 to just over 400) but that was over years and years of incrementally adding 25 lbs to my max each off season, not so big pop my first year and maintain.
Just wondering if coaches still take a smaller guy and think they can add some bulk quickly or if they assume a guy is already 90% of what he will be and there is only incremental gains left to be had.

I really like the depth we have at both safety and CB. The addition of Dillingham at safety adds some needed speed at the position (if he plays). The addition of the transfers at CB should improve that position overall. We'll see if we improved enough when we play SMU.
