The lights of the city are just too much to have an observatory in town anymore. The observatory is a thing of the past. Today you can log onto a computer and view space images from great instruments around the world.

That may be true, but there was a sense of achievement finding a nebula using right ascension and declination. On e that was mastered, you could move up to a computerized drive, but you would know what the computer was doing. Sigh! I guess I am starting to long for a romantic time, although this is now a truly marvelous age!

I guess I am starting to long for a romantic time, although this is now a truly marvelous age! Fully agree... the good old days were fun. But today is just a different version of awe and inspiration. The huge Hobby Eberly Telescope used for HETDEX at McDonald has reflector mirrors that total over 30 feet across -- it is huge, but no human eye observes through it. Electronic sensors direct the input into over 30,000 fibres for spectroscopic analysis. The Giant Magellan being built in Chili is even bigger, but human eyes will not observe through it. That world has changed. Still, it is fun to take binoculars and spot Andromeda on your own, without a computer finding it.

Glad no one on here claims Tennessee as their “other” school. The Vols appear destined for probation for major recruiting violations that cost their coach his job and prompted the retirement of the AD.
P.S. I’m also glad no one claims the Florida Gators, UGA’s main rival.

I follow Texas Tech T&F closely because of their strong ACU connection -- Head Coach Wes Kittley and throws coach Cliff Felkins are both ACU grads. Distance/XC coach, Jon Murray, is the former HC at ACU. It is because of Wes that I have had a role as an official at Tech track meets for 21 years. While I have an official's role at meets for many other schools - UT, Baylor, TCU, UTA, for instance - I really only follow Tech closely, but in T&F only.
I follow UGA because of my grand-daughter playing VB there, but I have not been able to get too enthused about any other sport at UGA.

Shortly after my arrival the Herschel Walker years started. Dominque Wilkins took the court for the men’s basketball team and three time Olympian Katrina McClain led the women’s team. Herschel and his younger sister both starred for the track team as well..and the track was directly across the street from the Campus View C of C, which made viewing easy.

As the clock ticks along, I find it less compelling to support my second school, UT Austin or Texas. It is hard to explain but the culture has changed over the years, not always in the best of ways, and the loyalty factor has degraded somewhat. At the same time, now that retirement and more free time has arrived, ACU has ascended in personal appreciation, as I think back on the background the university provided me. This is not to say I don't treasure the education and training I got from UT and the famous people that I got to meet and even work with, it is just the fundamentals provided by ACU wound up having a strong life long impact, and that is more apparent to me as the years fly by.

I graduated from Tulane University in 1978 in Electrical Engineering and from UNO in 1982 with an MBA.
Being from Louisiana, I am an LSU fan also, especially in baseball.
Obviously ACU does not play these teams frequently if at all, so I don't have to choose between them on a regular basis.

Got my bach from ACU in psychology, then went on to get my master's from SHSU (though I hated my time there and even after they won last year, I don't recognize them as one of my teams). Finally, I am currently working on my PhD at the University of Houston and have liked them since Tom Herman's H-Town Takeover during his time there. So, at the end of the day I cheer for my wildcats and cougars any chance I get.
