We got worked over in the second half and never adjusted to their high screen. Their size hurt us while we played our smaller guards. Need a lot of help now for the #1 seed.

This unfortunate game now makes the Sam game even more important. We might even wind up third or fourth seed in the Southland -- how weird is that?

Not that we didn’t already know the next two games are important, Matt Atkins tweeted the following earlier this evening showing the top four teams current/max points:
Nicholls: 36/42 Sam: 33/42 ACU: 34/40 SFA: 31/40
As it stands now, if we win out and SFA beats Sam, we do no better than #2 seed. Can’t believe canceling SELA game gonna cost us an outright title. Curious what Allen Ward has to say about this as my $ says travel to Katy via Hammond.

Here are my thoughts after a tough loss:
1. There was a crucial sequence late in the first half when the Cats had built a lead and earned a number of cheap fouls, playing a chippy style. We were reaching to turn the Bears over and more pressure wasn't needed. We just needed to stay in front of them and make them earn their baskets. The Bears got a number of easy baskets and earned lots of trips to the line simply because we were chasing players 25 to 30 feet from the rim (or in the backcourt). The Cats are going to face players that can handle intense ball pressure. Chasing steals is not always worth it.
2. Our offense and player movement were ok. I'm hoping we can play with more tempo, push the ball up the court, and make teams defend by moving as a unit. Our problem with playing faster on offense is becoming frantic, losing spacing, and turnovers.
3. If we face officials that won't call a charge (unless it's a post-play with a size mismatch), how will we adapt? Can we just contest the layup rather than stepping in front? The Bears at least tried a zone on a couple of possessions to break our rhythm.
4. Ryan Bergersen, the 6'6 UCA point guard, was the player of the game (39 minutes, 26 points, 7 assists, 14 FT attempts). After a rough start, he quieted all our pressure and was a consistent mismatch in the post.
5. Most of the time if you shoot 46% from the field and 52% from 3, you'll win. But not if you're 14-22 at the line. However, the Bears were 21-33 at the line so the free throw story was a wash.

As I mentioned before, we never adapted to their offense in the 2nd half. They ran the same thing over and over. They had a size advantage with our 3 guards lineup and since we switched every screen they took advantage of mismatches. A team that had won 3 games all year looked unstoppable.

After the shouting match from coach over crazy fouling we went to the locker room and morphed into a totally different team. Uh, and so did UCA. Incredible. How does a team like UCA look so unstoppable? We allowed it.

I don't know that I call the FT shooting a wash jCat. They made one less free throw than we attempted. So the officials are saying that we truly committed that many more shooting fouls? I have a hard time believing that.

We committed a lot of fouls. We were outsized. Airion had some silly fouls and then we did our usual trying to draw charges and it wasn’t working.

After seeing how SFA handled UCA 48 hours after we lost, I’m afraid we lost our focus and stop playing defense first. Tomorrow will be a good test for whether we learned our lesson.
