Some interesting facts to think about: - Turnover Margin: UCLA is a low turnover team, averaging only 11 a game. BYU played an entire game and got 1 steal. The Bruins had 4 total TOs in 40 minutes.
- Size: UCLA starts 3 players at 6'6. Their biggest regular starter is Chris Riley, 6'9 225. There's minimal big man depth on their squad because of injuries and the sudden mid-season departure of Jalen Hill in January. UCLA may turn to freshman Mac Etienne (6-9 220), who has played as many as 28 minutes in one game. Currently, through two tournament games, he's been on the court 5.5 minutes per contest.
- Shooters and scorers: three Bruin guards have taken over 250 shots on the season (Jaime Jaquez (6'6 220), Tyger Campbell (5-11 180), and Kentucky transfer guard Johnny Juzang (6-6 210). Against BYU and Michigan State, Jaquez and Juzang took over 53% of the Bruin's shots. When you add in Campbell that accounts for 71% of their looks.
- Three-point percentages: on paper, Jaquez is their best 3-point shooter by percentage (41.2% on the season but 5-6 in the tournament), but Juzang has the most attempts (6-16 in their two tournament games).
- Free Throws: Jaquez, Riley, and Jules Bernard (6-6 205) account for 57% of the Bruin's foul attempts on the year.
- Depth: The top 5 players are on the court a lot. The starting backcourt of Jaquez and Campbell rarely leave the game (both have logged over 949 minutes this season. Guard David Singleton (6-4 210) has played 473 minutes, but it there's a sizable drop-off in minutes after that. On their third game in 5 days, I'm curious if UCLA will break out a zone at some point just to buy a few minutes. Actually, I'm hopeful they'll try and take this approach to help our shooters find their spots.

This should be a decent game. They aren't as big as Texas, but protect the ball well. Can our relentlessness change that and wear them down by game's end? That will be key. They usually allow opponents an average of 44% FG percentage. I think if we can shoot 40+%, and create at least 12-15 turnovers, then we should have a chance. Like the Texas game, we need to be within a few points at the half and keep pressing. . Unfortunately, with tip off at 4:15p, I won't be able to watch this one.

While they are a low turnover team, they haven't necessarily played a good defensive team when it comes to causing turnovers. The best team they played at forcing turnovers was Seattle (Of the WAC) who is ranked 31st in the nation averaging 15.74 per game while we average 4.62 more per game (20.36 per game, including yesterday's game against Texas). And the most turnovers they had in a game was 18 against Arizona State (who ranks 51st in the nation for turnovers) in an OT game. Arizona State and Stanford are the only 2 teams in the top 100 in forcing turnovers (51st and 88th). If you want to expand to the top 150, you can include Oregon at 127. So there are only 3 teams in the top 150 at forcing turnovers in the PAC 12 which would be a reason why their low turnover numbers sit where they probably do. Another note regarding the BYU game, they are 306th in the nation at forcing turnovers.

Less than 24 hours until our first appearance in the second round of the NCAA tournament and . . . (crickets chirping)

Well, one different thing I see so far is that at least I am seeing more respect from their fanbase. Unlike the cocky Horn fans that still can't accept their loss, UCLA fans seem to be looking up stats and watching replays of the game. Are the Bruins coaches and players doing the same? I don't really know. This is a game where neither of us get a whole lot of time to prepare. We have to just play our games and may the best team win. This is another chance to learn to put the last game behind us, regardless of how big it was, and play our next game in front of us just as well.

Less than 24 hours until our first appearance in the second round of the NCAA tournament and . . . (crickets chirping) Bruin here. Some notes: Juzang not Jaquez was the transfer. We really only have one high D1 big man. Tiger is a great game manager but he is slow and he can't shoot. It was a huge problem against BYU in fact he was benched for it. Singleton might be the team's the best offensive player but he is definitely the worst defensive player Any one of Bernard, Jaquez, or Juzang can carry the team but nobody else can. Riley has a great shot from the elbow. For the press and turnovers, the teams that frustrated us were long athletic teams. We are missing 2 of our top 6 players but they left/were injured weeks ago Actually 7 because COVID because the #1 PG in the country to choose the G League over UCLA. The Bruins have lost to lower seeded second round teams in recent history (Hampton and Missouri come to mind). My physics and calculus teacher in high school droned on and on about Abilene. He was my all time favorite teacher, worked on the Manhatten Project and the Single Wing, so I have always wanted to visit but never have. The Pac-12 was way underrated this year. Nobody couple even meet much less practice until right before the season started. We lost the last 4 games prior to the tournament but in each game we had a double digit lead with less than 10 minutes left. I would not be surprised if you won this game. I REALLY don't think you will .

Other than playing one of our sister schools, Pepperdine, we don't have a lot of experience with the west coast. Right now, we are pretty healthy and you know you will see a lot of pressure from our guards. They are good at playing angles and anticipating moves. Usually we hit 3s pretty well, but Texas' size gave us fits with that and our FGs. If we struggle from behind the arch with you, not sure how well we will get the ball inside. You may or may not see much of our Big Kohl. Lately, Simmons has been a little more effective I think. Either way, I expect the Bruins to give us a real challenge. I'm not making any predictions at this point.

The reason for that was we hit the big time in track and field first but Physics followed into the big time. Glad to have you aboard and understand we have respect for universities like UCLA and consider it a great thing to get to play you, no matter the score.

Great interview. Speaks highly of our defense. I like this guy, and it's not just for what he said about us. I like what he says about the mental aspect of the game and his references to his history of play.

Thanks for your notes (and the correction). I was a little surprised at the results of the Bruin vs USC games. I guess that's a team with size (Oregon State too). ACU doesn't have team size, but we're very active and play the ball fiercely. If UCLA likes to work multiple passes to get people to spots, I think they'll find a lot of resistance. And we're better on the glass than you'd think. Can't wait to see Campbell and Damien Daniels go head to head. That should be fun.
