As long as Coach Beard stays put in Lubbock, then I’m good. If I were a betting man, which I am, I would bet on him coaching at Texas. On r/DoughGoesIn on Reddit (the Texas Tech Sub) I specifically had mentioned that in previous years with the rumors I didn’t think that Beard would leave. This year though is the first year that I’m a bit afraid of it. With Shaka leaving on his own, Texas avoids the $7.3 million buyout of Shaka and then on April 1st, Coach Beards Buyout from other teams to go to another Big 12 school drops to $4 Million (I think it’s at around $7.5 Million right now) so Texas would be saving a good chunk in buyout money. I could also see Del Conte wanting to strike while the iron is hot coming off of a Big 12 tournament championship.

I think one thing that helps us with Joe and is that Goodenough went the big school route for awhile, was not super successful and saw that bigger is not always better, and returned to a smaller school. I'm hoping Joe will listen to her voice of experience.

I wish Shaka well at Marquette. That move really shakes up the various coaching options and it will be interesting to see who Texas picks and who will accept the pressure of becoming the Texas coach as the new Moody there comes online. Talk about a pressure cooker. I guess a big question is who will declare for the transfer portal now. There were some players quite close to Smart.

Do y’all think UT pays the next coach more than Sarkisian at 5.2 M? No.

Guessing it will be in the $3+ million range, but could go higher with a really big name. UT is still a football school and lack of success in basketball has yet to stir up support to the level of football. Shaka was an experiment and VCU was not exactly the level of program typical for schools like Texas to raid for coaches. Not many even understood his system. Rick Barnes created a desire to move up the ladder of respectability, that is for sure.
A similar issue could be said of Louisville and Smart. Note that Smart was fired from South Florida after leaving Texas. In the past Texas has gambled on some lesser known coaches but today, the bar is much higher and the heat on the athletic director is pretty strong. With so much financial support at risk, I suspect a coach with a history of success at high level will be wanted. Of course, it is all a guessing game at this point. I find it a new twist that recruiting of top notch people in athletics seems to be getting harder when UT has no problems getting top of the line academics. Maybe it is a bit toxic and too demanding at UT athletics. There is no doubt donations in athletics has suffered a bit of late (other than the Moody Coliseum project) while academic endowment seems to be doing quite well.

I was surprised when I saw what Beard makes at Tech. He has done a good job there but it still surprised me that Tech was shelling out that kind of money. It may be tough to keep Joe if salaries in the million dollar range are being waved in his face.

While that's true but what if Joe doesn't want the pressure of having to make the March Madness tournament in two years before the boosters at Tech start looking for someone to replace him?

I think that is all of our hope. While the money may be nice, the politics and pressure at larger schools may not be worth the extra money.

Sometimes a seven figure salary and a 4 or 5 year contract can set a coach up financially. Someone like Joe (or Shaka) would know that there’s always a mid major job out there.

Best defense against losing a coach is a good offense of support, not just salary for HC but for the entire program (e.g. staff salaries, recruiting budget, facilities, ticket sales, Wildcat Club membership, etc.). We’re fortunate to have a president with an incredible vision for ACU, and an AD that has “been there, done that” in helping a mid-major leverage tournament success. Finish Moody, then fill it, and we’ll be all right! Go Wildcats!! Trust. The. Process.

Coach Beard will speak with Texas today. Coach Bears has ceased conversations with Tech (supposedly). The fact that there hasn't been an announcement he's staying at Texas speaks volumes.
