Given the circumstances around Tim Tadlock’s recently announced contract restructure (open a&m baseball HC position, Chris Beard’s defection to UT, etc.) as well as our basketball HC’s departure following historic success (and well-deserved national recognition), I’m curious to see if ODCC “acts” by negotiating a contract restructuring (buyout provision)/raise with Coach McCarty, or, do we “react” when a&m, Rice, etc., come calling. The lesson learned from basketball is not to wish it won’t happen but, rather, act to make our job too good to leave! Go Wildcats!!

ACU faces a new level of national awareness of successful programs in quite a few areas. Both sports and academics are fertile shopping places for successful coaches and professors, and I don't like losing talent to competitors. I can assure you that the university has lost exceptional professors in the past simply because it did not step up to protect very valuable people. And we all know about our recent coaching loss. In the end, my opinion is most of these valuable assets would more than pay for boosts in compensation and buy-outs -- and if not then be bold and willing to take things down a bit. This situation is a natural evolution of the university moving to greater recognition. We all know ACU is the highest rated university in Texas based on first year student experiences across several categories. By not acting in the past, I know the university lost out on millions of dollars and a lot of reputation. We need to reward and protect the key people who elevate the university. This is just a normal evolution of fine universities as they grow in stature. I always espouse the idea of rewarding success and I also think it is time for universities aspiring for higher ground to consider refining things like tenure and accomplishment. Go ahead and argue with me about this, I have fought for these concepts before, my feeling will not be hurt.

If Coach Goodenough’s just announced contact extension is indicative, ACU’s senior leadership agrees.

It’s just one year. Unless his connection in the game leads him back to a familiar place but now as a head coach, I would have to think it will take a couple more years of success before he gets bigger calls.

Yes, one year is not enough time to make much of a move but as success comes along, we can step it up I hope. Julie's contract was surely a great sign.

Coach McCarty did get a contract extension through 2026 earlier this month. This extension along with the finalization of his new staff bodes well for ACU baseball going forward. Maybe conference championships can continue in 2022 and beyond. acusports.com/news/2021/8/3/baseball-mccarty-signs-contract-extension-through-2026.aspx

Coach McCarty is an absolutely fantastic coach who fits ACU to a T. He has been recruiting players who are sought out by other peer schools and winning the recruiting battles time and again. He has done a terrific job reaching out to the alumni players -- I have talked to several baseball alumni who tell me that he is the best communicator with alumni since Bill Gilbreth. Signing Coach McCarty to a contract extension is a no-brainer!
