Here's a little bit from our sit-down interview with coach Dorrel, which aired Thursday night.
We should air a longer version on Sunday night.

Thank you Evan. I appreciate some of the questions you asked. Not just “softballs” Has anyone seen the additional interview footage of coach Dorrel interview? I would’ve liked to have seen Evan ask this question, how can all the other ACU Sports programs basketball, softball, soccer and baseball be so successful on and off the field. Football seems to be stagnant or lagging behind? Don’t they all have to recruit to ACU’s high academic standards. What is being done to change the current team culture? As a personal note…I find it curious when a coach says last year doesn’t have any bearing on this year… None of my coaches I played for said that. They all said people were gunning for you and you/we had to improve on your weaknesses from the previous season. In my opinion Winning definitely helps with recruiting. It’s harder find players that are willing to pay more tuition, deal with higher academic standards, live in small town Abilene and consistently lose more games than they win… I really enjoyed ACU baseball coach McCarty interview. His assessment of last season’s achievements, freshman and sophomore athletes and his challenge to the players to build on the past season…it’s a stark contrast to Dorrel’s recap of his team’s past season.

Hey y'all --
Looks like for our Sunday show we added one question about his excitement for the WAC, praising the school presidents & ADs, etc.
I can work on cutting up our full interview and uploading to our website when I'm back in the office on Tuesday.
Also, just for the record, that's not me interviewing Dorrel. That's our weekend anchor Noah Gross. I'm the one working the cameras for that interview.

I wasn’t too thrilled with his answer about the prior season either, masterp.

I think we all were frustrated with the past year's football performance but there sure seems to be a lot of changes being vested into this coming year (including some down field passing which is my rally point.) I am encouraging us all to give the coming season a chance to show a major turn-around. The players and coaches are retooled and hopefully loaded up for a much better year so let's see if the formula works. A turn-around would be a very exciting and uplifting thing. So I have shifted from frustrated to hopeful and expectant, very willing to forget the recent performances in hopes of an exciting year ahead. It is about time for a strong performance and I know we will all be happy to see great progress.

I bought Coach D summed it up perfectly. Paraphrasing here, We have to be better up front on both sides of the ball. How much we improve will depend on what happens in the trenches.

The answers to the questions reminded me of a letter I received from Tex Cruz. Literally two paragraphs that said nothing. I felt the comments were generalized to the point that they could have been said by any football coach at any level. Maybe that’s just me….

One last question for the crew….doesn’t it seem absurd to worry about losing 4 starters on the 0-line that helped the team go 1 & 5 last season and regressed from the 2019 - 5 & 7 season?

Not that I’m able to do much to assist with funding, however, I remained convinced that ACU will never be as competitive in FB as it wants to be without catching up to our competitors from a facilities standpoint. When we picture recruits, they’re standing on Anthony Field with Wessel Scoreboard in the background, which makes sense, given thats the best thing we have. However, many competing photos are taken in indoor practice facilities. My point being while everyone has a stadium, not everyone has an indoor practice facility—just the good programs.
I’m thrilled by ACU’s investment in basketball and volleyball as represented by Moody’s massive (both in $’s and scope) remodel. However, I, personally, don’t believe you may underestimate the importance of facilities in recruiting. Consequently, I reiterate my belief that ACU will be less than it’s best until Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium is joined by a similarly world-class indoor practice facility.
Go Wildcats!!

I personally have never been a fan of the "Build it and they will come" mentality. That is not to say that it isn't a consideration in recruiting, but it isn't everything. Now, football and basketball recruiting is very different. I get that, but Golding built an incredible program with what many would consider very low budget facilities. The construction came as a consequence of both the men's and women's success on the court. My point being, I don't think we need these massive construction projects to get recruits to sign on the dotted line.
