The assistant coaching and support staff salary pool needs to be increased and stabilized so we can find (full and part-time) coaches with top-flight experience and keep them around longer past two seasons. The players deserve a certain level of consistency.

I bleed purple and, yes, am a old letterman but of little note. I think about programs based not just on record but on momentum. It is fun to watch young athletes gain proficiency and show mettle as they strive to improve and raise their level of performance. Ingenious coaches who implement schemes and systems with quantum improvement steps create amazing excitement. The problem with our football program is the quality athletes that might want to come here (after all we are a good academic school and in some areas a very distinguished one) will not see attributes of positive momentum but rather a see acceptance of the same old lack of ingenuity we have shown for a few years now. I remember the approval I felt seeing the ingenuity and rise of the Boise State Football Program under Chris Petersen. He was inventive, daring, and willing to try things -- and he took a relatively unknown program from obscurity to national prominence. He had no trouble recruiting athletes because they could feel the momentum and excitement of the program. Ever been to Boise, Idaho? I have, many times, and it has little to recommend it over Texas and Abilene in my opinion. But it had a football program full of surprises that was fun to watch and must have been exciting for those student athletes. They never seemed boring trying to run jet sweeps on 3rd and seven, You almost could never guess what they might try next. They were fun to watch and very unpredictable. Read the book, "The Rise of Boise State Football" the grittiest team ever.

I’ve believed a leopard can’t change its spots.....with that being said I did notice a a few new wrinkles in offensive play calling. (Downhill runs & fourth down touchdown play) But I still saw a lot of the same old play calling which goes nowhere against FBS & FCS caliber opponents.
Dorrel’s play calling reminds me of listening to old school rockers Ozzy Osborn & Angus Young talk in interviews....you listen to them and shake your head. Wondering what the heck???

I would say our defensive coordinator coming from South Dakota st should have been considered a good hire yet also a surprising hire. South Dakota st has had a formidable program for years and has been well established in FCS football. I’m not sure why or how he ended up at ACU but what is he missing or wanting or needing that he didn’t have at SDSU besides certain resources? If he is a good coach, can he overcome what he is lacking with our program? The rest of our staff is inexperienced or comes from D2 which has been discussed ad nauseum, but how many years of mediocrity are accepted before you start implementing change?

The execution was poor especially by the safeties but his schemes were overall working pretty well against an offense that is P5 quality.

I wasn't really expecting to be able to compete against SMU but I was hoping we would at least make a showing. I was disappointed in our lack of "we have nothing to lose" attitude. Who calls the plays? Dorrel or Lambo? I didn't get a sense that we were trying anything very out of the ordinary. Playing an FBS school is the chance to try and open up things offensively because there is "nothing to lose". I didn't get that impression. Granted, I was following on ESPN's Gametracker which was terrible at consistently following the action. If running a vanilla offense helps us in the future against conference opponents then I'm ok with doing it. Just felt like this was our opportunity to really open up and have some fun and I didn't get the impression that was happening. I want Dorrel to win because he seems like a good guy but there is going to have to be a change in the sense of urgency to change for him to last past this year.

As I sat in the (extremely warm) stands at Gerald Ford Stadium last night I kept having a recurring thought. It was: Haven't I seen this movie before, several times?

I looked at the participation report for the SMU game and it is a total mess. That is NOT the fault of anyone at ACU. The participation report is kept by the home team and as anyone who tried to follow live-stats for the game knows, the SMU staffer in charge of live stats appeared to be ingesting hallucinogens for the entire game. For example, according to the SMU-generated participation report, ACU had grand total 2 offensive linemen playing in the game and 6 wide receivers in the starting lineup. Now, only 2 offensive linemen would explain why Stone Earle was running for his life for most of the game (tongue planted firmly in cheek).
In past years, the participation reports have been cleaned up by the ACU staff in the week or weeks following the game. I do hope that is the case this year as well.

I was at the Baylor game and even though we got spanked, there was excitement in the air because of the points we scored. There were big plays, longs runs and good stops. I’ve seen very little of that since then in our games against FBS teams. As much as I would have enjoyed taking my wife back to her alma mater last year, that would have been even worse than last night. I’m ready for next week. My wife and I are driving up to Abilene on Thursday night and will be at the reception for Mel Hailey on Friday and then the game. I hear that the seafood place which now occupies the Towne Crier building is pretty good. Anyone been there? Sorry to see SMU being back in 80s form. I like the new seafood place @ R.I.P. Town Crier. They told us that they fly in fresh from Galveston. I loved the big fried shrimp. I hope you do well and we need to get our skillet back from $MU.

In case anyone has forgotten, we lost BOTH Billy McCreary AND D.J. Fuller in the Baylor game. I believe both in the first half. Both had impressive stats prior to having to leave the game due to their injuries. Not in any way saying nor implying that we would have won that game if both of them had stayed healthy, but, it might have been a much closer and competitive game. When he was healthy, Billy M. looked really good. At the game vs SELA he was a stud. D.J. was also a very talented receiver. He just had bad luck on top of bad luck.

Galveston Seafood is great, not just the shrimp. I had been missing some Cajun tastes since moving to West Texas. This place isn't a Cajun restaurant, but it offers some dishes.

A bit on the soft side in my opinion. I would be strongly addressing the challenges we face and laying down hard expectations for going forward. I had a college coach at ACU decades ago and he (Dee Nutt) was quite clear when we did not perform. Together we would set our goals for improvement, not just admit failure. I know times have changed, I know we go much softer on everyone now-a-days, but I sure would prefer to hear what would define success after a dismal game in Dallas. A little fire in the belly might be a better message. How about a 60 point win against LC. How about we hold them to under 150 yards total offence? How about we exceed expectations for a change?
Sorry if I seem out of character, but those third and shorts almost drove me crazy. We have a nice guy as HC and he sure seems likeable, but it is time to light a fire under this team -- just my opinion which buys you nothing. I just don't enjoy listening to ex-players and coaches belittle our efforts.

I remember at the end of the KC era, i hated how things turned out for him with ACU as our HC because he seemed like such a good guy, but it always seem like good guys struggle to consistently win at higher levels. Now on the sidelines I know the coaches are in your face and what not, but don’t sugar coat things and feed us BS. I wish AD would have come out and said it straight to the media that we looked terrible and the expectation is that things change and change quickly.

Maybe we looked terrible partly because of play calling, especially on third down. Can't chew out players for bad decisions from the coaches. But he could have said the coaches need to do a better job just like the players do.
