Now that I’ve recovered from the heat sitting in my SMU G.J. Ford frying pan seat and have read most of the recent outside analysis on this site. With a cooled/semi-clear mind it got me to wondering. What stats most align with win loss records. The football game I grew up with and played has changed. Attached is a recent article that show the following items determined important. www.topdawgmarketing.com/seo/data-science/whats-the-most-important-stat-to-winning/#results 9 statistics that in this article showed had heavy correlation to winning percentage. These were (in order) Total Points Touchdowns Points Per Game Avg Points Per Game Allowed Redzone Scores Offensive Td’s Offensive Yards First Downs Redzone Attempts The first four give pause for thought…I’ve not put pen to paper and ran the numbers to see where/if the above 9 items hold water and mirror ACU’s record versus our competition. What does everyone think? What stats are most important in your view and where do we rank in the FCS & in the WAC?

Interesting discussion. I would like to have seen a bigger sample and over a longer period of time. I would have liked to see if/how these stats may have changed over time.

I do not deem myself to be an expert in football, analysis, or any related subjects/disciplines. That being said, in my humble opinion, the most important stat to consider is the one that shows which team has the most points when the clock hits 0:00 at the end of the fourth quarter. I seem to sense a direct correlation there. Not having a Phd, I could be wrong.

My question or curiosity was are we making improvements that I don’t/haven’t seen, as I’ve been so focused on the final score. I’ve watched this current offensive scheme and for me I personally don’t like the offensive style. What do we call it? It’s does not appear to be a spread, power or zone running offense scheme. with that being said, I did see a couple new wrinkles at SMU…like the crossing clear out play for the tightend reception up the sideline. I did like the one and only quasi screen play on fourth down that went for a touchdown. From my view our offensive coaching/play caller just picks a play and see what happens. Stone was running for his life how about a couple screens or draws to slow down the rush or some sort of I formation and play action to see if defensive backs play truly disciplined with their eyes. In all the Dorrel years I’ve not seen a team that dictates play. Hopefully that changes this football season.

A huge stat in any game is turnover margin. I know Bill Belichick's record at home with a winning turnover margin was 108-7 since 2001.

Read the article. Turnovers = wins has become a myth. It may have a had a significant impact of a game 20 years ago, but one or two INTs are almost harmless with spread offenses ruling the sport. The threat of a deep pass is likely a higher reward than the risk of a pick 30 yards down the field.

ACU's 3 wins came with no turnovers. Their two losses came when they lost turnover battle.

A stat that tells a lot about a game is # of plays over 20 yards and # of plays over 40 yards. Great teams can generate these explosive plays and superior defenses have the speed/athleticism to eliminate them.
