I will say I have enjoyed the running of Smith #20 and White #24!

We were very surprisingly strong in the run game but our defensive penalties were atrocious.

I honestly thought this game would be closer than it was.
The good- The defense was flying around. Caused turnovers, after having none in the first 2 games Back to back games with a punt block LB play was really solid; Green, Hargrove, Kier, Brannon, Adams and Coheley looked great Averaged 6.6 yards per carry Kobe Clark! 3 really good freshmen- Tyrin Bradley, Coheley and Quae Walton Depth- so much depth on the Defense Sema'J! So awesome to see him on the field
The bad- Field goals inside 40 yards have to be automatic; have to make those every time Satterfield. Goes in and gives up a big pass. The lines up offsides on the next play Need another WR to step up; teams will try to take Clark away Have to get going faster. First quarter was bad Can we stop the run up to the ball and snap play, please! No deep shots on offense. Better teams will line up with 8 in the box to stop the run, knowing that most of our passes are 8-10 yards at most Get the ball and go forward. Too often, guys are trying to go sideline to sideline, instead of taking the yardage that is right in front of them

Now we have to take a time out on a kickoff. Can't the players on the field make adjustments? This is silly. It was actually a good timeout. We were up 3 scores and allowed the Kickoff team to show their hand that is was an onside kick. Dorrel was able to put the hands team in.

The offense really needs to play better on 3rd down. Some of it is play calling, but a big problem is the execution. Stone should not be throwing a swing pass on 3rd and 8 multiple times a game. That’s my only complaint after tonight.

Thats not what's going to win us conference games.

That’s my only complaint after tonight. Earle was certainly managing the game tonight and took very few chances. He made several of those swing passes early as if a sack timer went off in his head. At least he gave our backs a chance to make a play, and guys from the past like Tracey James or Billy McCrary would win those matchups. However a few of our upcoming opponents can virtually leave our short passes undefended and rally to the ball after it's thrown (what I would call the Sam approach). There might be some tweaks that could be made--like widening the route angle on a RB swing pass or using some pre-snap motion to create momentum and further spread out the defense. Might be good to experiment here rather than hope for "perfect execution." There were also a few downfield options that Earle didn't see. That should all make for good film study. Overall I think the game was very encouraging because the Cats strung together a few plays in all three phases of the game that knocked the Falcons back on their heels. And our secondary held up just fine which was a big plus that I think helped our pass rush. As others have noted, our LB play was steady. It's nice to see progress and this gives me hope that the Cats can clean up many correctable mistakes and put together some good game plans to challenge some of our upcoming opponents.

Plus, very nice crowd in the stands thanks to family weekend. (Personally could have done without the churros in favor of lemon bars.) 😁

I agree with the above and point out we possessed the ball exactly two seconds longer than UTPB. Without that amazing four minutes of 4 scores this would have been a nail biter. Kudos to the line play and 24 and 20 -- Smith and White were running hard, Clark was his typically great self, but boos for the penalties. 80 to 90 yards a game in penalties is not going to work well the rest of the year. We lined up off sides again but it was not called and we twice did not have the required number off the line on offense. That was pretty sloppy,
I wish Earle would not risk the run so often. And, two questions... why did we elect to receive the opening kickoff into the wind? Why was the hands teams not already ready to get the attempted on-side kick? Are coaches not paying attention? Sitting where we were, we could tell it was coming the way UTPB came back onto the field.
It was a good win and happy to have it but other than the four minute totally weird time when we score 3 TDs and a FG, this would have been a nail biter. We did not get 400 yards TO but we did prove we can outplay bigger but slower linemen. Kudos to UTPB, they are a pretty solid D-2 team.
Finally, the most entertaining play: our interior lineman intercepting the pass and bulling over for a touchdown. I said there was something different coming this time and indeed our defense played more aggressively, four take aways and more blitzes/hurries. But maybe its time to run the stands for the silly penalties.
N.B. Need I add, ACU and UTPB had the same number of first downs...ugh. We still have work to do and our play calling is weak.

I'm concerned that a D2 team almost totally shut down our medium and longer psssing. Sometimes we had good protection and Earle couldn't find a receiver, other times it looked like the outlet pass was a foregone conclusion (not really looking to go downfield). I disagree about Earle's running, it seemed to me he could have made many more yards himself than the outlet pass to a RB or WR. We had some different play calls this game but basically our 3rd down calls sucked. I really don't care if I ever see the pitch to the wide receiver/end around again. We just can't seem to make it work and still call it time and time again. And why can't we hit chippie field goals?

I have a slightly less critical observation.
Don’t forget that we are still without Dobbins and Spadone (although he was announced in the starting lineup he didn’t play).
Pros. OL pretty much dominated. The one sack was a coverage sack. Our little tiny OL pushed those big boys around. Noah Caldwell. R Williams, Stapp, Anderson, Moffett Turnover margin. No dumb QB decisions (i e throwing into coverage) DL pretty much dominated Our little tiny DL whipped up on those big boys. Tackling. Especially the LB.
Cons Penalties. 3rd down Satterfield T Williams Stopped playing to win and started playing not to lose in 3rd qtr.
From my perspective in sec 206, the deep ball was never there and precious few intermediate routes. They dropped seven back in coverage with 2 safeties over the top and ran to the ball, assuming their big linemen could control the line of scrimmage. But they couldn’t. As our OL adjusted, they were getting 5-6 yards downfield before engaging the linebackers. That’s why we had so many 8-10+ yard running plays. This is also the defensive philosophy of SHSU only they do it better and faster.

My wish for Earle running less is fear of injury. He is a great runner as is Mansell, and they can break big plays. But some intermediate routes and something besides end arounds seems less risky than having to run our future star quarterback into high velocity tackles. I was very happy with our line play and backers, not so much with our corners -- but there were two really fine corner tips for incompletions. I did not see the delayed pass over the middle this time, and that looked open with so many back. They ran the 3-3-5 and we did not seem to take into account the weakness of their defense. I thought we should have scored in the forties at least.

My understanding was UTPB as mentioned before, is now a good Div.2 team, and due to the less stringent requirements in this division, it is not unusual for a Div. 2 to beat a FCS. I recall us doing it to Southwest Texas, now Texas State a couple of times. Interestingly, they stopped scheduling us after that. Going against bigger lines on both sides of the field may have explained the holding penalties. The game should have been a good learning experience for our team, more than the previous two games. I will be curious as to whether our technique and line play improves next week at Lamar. I look forward to the wonderful aroma of that place if I am able to make it.

Speaking of Texas St I watched the last quarter of their loss to UIW. UIW is impressive. I’m glad we don’t have them this year, they’d have a chance to hang half a hundred on us.
