What am I missing? Why would Carthel be interested in coaching at ACU at this point? Don't he and his dad both have history here? Also wife was assistant V-Ball coach here. With what we were willing to pay probably a raise of 60K and getting out of East Tx! Given what Carthel’s done since he was passed over five years ago, the fact he wasn’t selected makes me doubt his candidacy. Likewise, if son’s like father, Todd Dodge was to UNT what Nick Saban was to Miami. Meanwhile, we’ve got what we’ve got and if the Metroplex folks are willing to do the really heavy financial lifting, I like our chances. That said, I understand those reluctant to “drink the Kool-Aid” as even Thomas doubted.

I don't know about you, but KP seems pretty energetic to me and has several connections to Texas, but I get the other criticisms. Something else I have been thinking about is that the best head coaches are not always the best coordinators, and vice versa. Likely wildkitten will read that and react the same way he did to mavsman saying Tech didn't care about defense, but regardless, it is true. It also may be a level issue. He was not great at FBS, but could be great at FCS. I can give you a list of guys who drop a level and become successful. Valid points that I completely agree with. My main point here is that I'm unclear as to why most of this board has already anointed him as a great hire. He's not someone that I immediately get excited about like I would have a Riley Dodge or someone similar. There's a just a lot of "may's" and "if's" that we're hoping come true. I also believe that if your opinion changed on him based on his press conference that is silly. He wasn't going to come out and tell you that we're gonna suck and he's not excited to be a HC. I will clear it up for you. Most of the board is "hopeful" people. They want to trust our leadership, and can see that we hired a coach with a variety of experience on the staff of several FBS and Power 5 teams. We all had our guy we wanted in the back of our mind, but we also weren't on the search committee. Also, I don't think it's important if you get "immediately excited" about this hire. If you were, what would you fill your days with instead of your cynical posts on this board? I motion for you to change your name to "DodgeStanFan101". Enough with the Dodge stuff man...

I think we have beaten this topic into submission. So henceforth, this thread will be locked while we pursue other interests. For example, should Julie Goodenough be fired because the team lost a game? (Joke) If Oscar disagrees with me, he is welcome to unlock it with no hard feelings. I just think it's time to move on.
However, with great power comes great responsibility. So naturally, I have the last word.
There is no doubt that the hiring of KP was a surprise and in some ways a disappointment on the surface. He is not at all what we expected, which was an up and coming offensive minded assistant from the SEC or Big 10 of 12. Face it, everyone including me was looking for a big splash. But let's consider what he is rather than what he is not.
1. I want someone with P5 or successful G5 experience. Check. While he has never been a head coach, he has been a DC at several very good programs. I don't think Matt Wells got a fair shake but it made KP available. The reason this is important is that I never felt that the previous coaches were very good talent evaluators. Added to that, I don't think the previous staff ever let go of their D2 mindset. I wonder if some of the guys are leaving because they are still on 1/2 scholarships?
2. I want someone with maturity. Check. One thing that the former HC demonstrated was his lack of maturity. His flair-ups are legendary. His refusal to do some things that were expected of him as the face of the program was embarrassing. He was unwilling or unable to "fit in" to the mission and culture of ACU. In KP, we have a mature individual who is so respected that his previous head coach came to support him and a previous ACU head coach recommended him.
3. I want someone who can effectively recruit Texas and Oklahoma and find high quality transfers. Check.
4. I want someone who can put a solid product on the field. I want a better defense. Check. I want a much better offense. TBD depending on his offensive coordinator.
So, while I was expecting a big splash, we seemed to have gotten most of the boxes checked. I'm for sure not Purple Pollyanna. But I'm ready to see if this guy can produce and be a coach who "gets it".
