We are all thrilled by the play and potential of multi-sport athlete Tristan Keller. Guess what? There will be another accomplished multi-sport athleter next year. Not so many sports, but really immpressive. Payton Hull of Peaster was district POY (and all-state) in basketball; district co-POY in Volleyball; and finished 4th in the medalist competition at the state golf championship. She shot 73 on the second day and was leading in the clubhouse for a while. The state tournament is played at Jimmy Clay in Austin. If you want to see a beautiful golf swing, take a look at the pictures on her Twitter page. ***Instagram***

I came across a list of 797 2023 D1 WBB recruits. This list includes a handful of JUCO commits who will sign at the end of this year. The rest of the list are high school recruits both signed and committed. So I entered all of their heights into a spreadsheet and did a simple analysis. Yes, I nerded out a bit.
We on the board are always interested in why we don't seem to be able to recruit the 6'4 or taller girls. This might give us some insight.
The average height of all recruits is just under 5'11. The shortest recruit is 5'1 and the tallest is 6'9. The median height is also 5'11 which makes sense with a large data base. The mode - aka the most frequent height - is 6'0.
Now, what about recruiting tall girls? Only 1.88% of recruits are 6'5 or taller. 4.02% are 6'4 and another 5.02% are 6'3. So only about 11% of prospects are 6'3 or taller in any given recruiting year. If you expand to 4 or 5 recruiting years, roughly 1 in 10 roster spots on average are filled by girls 6'3+ so most schools do, in fact, have one or more bigs.
An unscientific look at several Mid-Major rosters tells me that most bigs are projects at best. I saw no 6'4+ girls who are starters although several are contributors in limited minutes. The best bigs are all at the high major level. No surprise there.
The best mid-major bigs are 6'2 or 6'3. Several of our WAC opponents have 6'3 posts so we will have to contend with that. Our Meredith Mayes was listed in the data base at 6'2 but she was added as a sophomore. She seems to be listed at 6'3 everywhere her senior year. Of course, we recruited 2 6'2 girls in 2021 both of whom turned out to be 6'0. But that wss a Covid year and the staff was largely recruiting from afar.
Hope this gives you some perspective on recruiting bigs.

Meredith Mayes, the 6’3 keystone to the 2023 recruiting class had surgery yesterday for a torn ACL. Her dad, however, is a physical therapist so she will have the best possible rehab before coming to Abilene this summer. She appears to have made an impact beyond just her basketball prowess as evidenced by an amazing article in the Tulsa World. You should be able to read it through a link @billhaisten Attachments:

Just watching some film of the Bixby OK high school girls games. A couple of tidbits: Gracy Wernli is 5'10" and has a very quick release. Hopefully she will be a high percentage 3-point shooter for us. 2ndly-Gracy's sister Kate is a freshman and already playing significant minutes for a really good Bixby team. Hoping that Meredith Mayes surgery went well and her rehab has started. Will be great having her 6'3" height on the floor next year.

All I know is that she is with the team for every game and her Dad is a physical therapist. She would appear to be in good position. I saw a tweet from her Mom that she planned to be ready this fall. Maybe she can work with the ACU trainers this summer.

2023 high school recruiting is done. They are looking at transfers but will see what current players will possibly enter the transfer portal at the end of the season.
