Interesting. WAC-asun football conference? Another short term alliance? Schedules have already been announced for 2022. So starting in 2023?

I figured this would be the case. It only made sense to continue it.

I agree Oscar. It sounds like the 2 conferences have agreed to the parameters, but just how they get there is yet to be announced
Maybe the WAC champ plays the A-Sun champ and whichever team wins gets the AQ?

Lamar, UIW, and Sam are not part of part of the “alliance.” Maybe those schools will be dropped from schedules and made up by EKU, Kennesaw, UNA, and Peay.
I’m just speculating, but to form this to get an autobid seems complicated, especially since Sam and JSU don’t seem to be eligible.

It’s also concerning that UIW was not on the list. Are they leaning towards returning to the SLC?

It’s also concerning that UIW was not on the list. Are they leaning towards returning to the SLC? From the WAC announcement Sam Houston won the inaugural WAC/ASUN Challenge to earn the group's AQ with a 6-0 record and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the FCS playoffs. In addition, WAC member Stephen F. Austin earned an at-large selection. The WAC also adds University of the Incarnate Word in 2022, who won the Southland Conference last season and earned an automatic selection to the playoffs. New ASUN member, Kennesaw State, earned an automatic selection as champions of the Big South Conference. Having four institutions that played in the postseason ranks the partnership among the elite FCS conferences nationwide.

This is the paragraph I was referring to. “DENVER - After partnering in 2021 to provide an automatic qualification to the FCS Football Playoffs, the Western Athletic Conference and Atlantic Sun Conference have announced plans to continue and expand the partnership in 2022 and beyond. The new version of the alliance will feature Abilene Christian, SFA, Southern Utah and eventually Tarleton and Utah Tech (formerly Dixie State) from the WAC as well as Central Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky, Kennesaw State, North Alabama and Austin Peay from the ASUN.”

I do not think it will be a scheduling alliance like last year. They are kinda making it up as they go along because JSU and SHSU do not count for the minimum required 6 because they are going FBS and Tarleton and Dixie do not count because they are in the 3rd year of transition. So neither has the minimum 6 for autobid and their was no other solution for either. SHSU and JSU threw a wrench into the works for both leagues football wise and it was too late to amend schedules. I think both leagues are doing the best they can given the circumstances. IF UIW changes their minds and stays in the SLC, then the WAC is in real trouble football wise. I do not foresee any BSC or SLC or anyone else in an FCS league joining. Tarleton and Dixie still have 2 more seasons to play in transition and UTRGV will not have a football team until at least 2025. That leaves SUU, ACU, SFA, (UIW?) as the only WAC teams that are eligible for playoffs until the 24-25 school year and UTRGV will not have a football team until at least a year after that. Who knows what will happen in the coming years, but WAC football is in big trouble.

If this alliance stays together for the foreseeable future, WAC football will be okay despite Tarleton’s delusions of grandeur. I think the future of FCS will be football-only conferences like the Missouri Valley.
