Very different defensive scheme. DL did well all things considered. LBs will got more comfortable over time. Secondary made numerous big plays… QB competition is gonna be interesting. Hated Dobbins didn’t play. Sunday and X looked for real.

Lots of things to like. Let's start with kicking team
We seem to have a very good kicker. Ramsey made each extra point and drilled a 48 yard field goal as one team period was ending. His backup appears to be Freshman Kyle Meschi who made 1 or 2 extra points as well. Meschi handled one kickoff and drilled it through the back of the endzone. Ramsey's was good, just not quite as far
Punter was another story. Grant Nickel handled punting and the 1st one was 50 yards. However, his next 2-3 were averaged only 30ish yards. Nickel is also the placeholder for extra points and field goals
Defense- Team is rolling out a 3-3-5 defense. Starting DL was Oke, Oladele and Massey. Big front for sure.
LBs were R. Young, D. Moore and Coheley. Wilhoit also played a lot. All 4 rush the QB and lineup all over the place.
DBs were Jolly and Egbo at CB; Iz. Kelley, Moffett and Plumley were the safeties
I focused my attention more on offense tonight, but the defense was solid. One thing that seemed to surprise the defense was the offense went hurry up most of the game. At times, they were trying to get lined up and the offense was running the play. Play of the day was a tip by Wilhoit that went into the hands of Egbo who raced the ball down to the 5 yard line. Others on defense that I noticed- Trey Adams, TJ Marshall, Damion Hart, Jordan Butler, Luke Gambs and Connor Warkentin.
Offense was pretty impressive tonight Starters QB McIvor RB Banks WR Golightly, Tae. Williams and McCasland TE Caldwell OL R. Moore, Hatten, Yanta, Thielen, Ghirmai
2nd team QB Hawkins RB Sunday and Wishert WR Hut Graham, Neece and Bl. Taylor TE C. Cooper and Lebechi OL Sakiri, Colter Lynch, Car. Walker, Joz. Fogle and Howerton
The offense looked pretty solid the entire night. Both McIvor and Hawkins have a great feel for the offense. Hawkins faked a handoff and sprinted 40 yards for a touchdown. He honestly reminds me of Mansell with his athleticism. Dobbins did not play a single snap. Very odd. Banks looks bigger and stronger. Sunday and Wishert are big runners. Wishert broke a run where he ran through 3-4 tacklers on the way for a 45 yard touchdown. The best receivers today were McCasland and Graham. He is an athlete and they are finding ways to get him on the field. Golightly was open for a touchdown, but was interfered with which led to an interception by Moffett. Refs didn't see it, but it was clearly a penalty. Most use of TEs I have seen in 12 years. Even without Castles, Cooper had a lot of catches; Lebechi had one, Stafford had several catches and Myrick hauled in a deep pass for a touchdown. Offensive line looked solid. There were 5-6 sacks, but several of those were from blitzes from the linebackers. I see those as correctable things that can be fixed. To me, it's early in camp and this can get better.
Others on offense that caught my attention- WR Luke Moffitt OL Jamie Johnson; He is a tall and lanky. If he adds to that frame, watch out OL Trent Pullen; rotated with Howerton as the backup RT
Some guys that played little or none at all RB Dobbins WR Marc. Jones WR Boykins DB Jor. Mukes

Here’s what I saw tonight. QB - Both McIvor and Hawkins looked good. I feel better with two QBs. Hawkins scrambled for a 60 yd TD against the 2 defense. RB - Banks and Wishert; Wishert and Banks. Impressive. WR - Both Jones’s and Boykins were out. Hut Graham played some slot and looked very good. JR Ceyanes made a couple of nifty catches playing with Hawkins. Otherwise, WR looked pretty good overall. TE - Caldwell, Cooper, Castles and Stafford are probably the best tight end/H-back group in the UAC and maybe the country. Cooper looks fantastic as a receiver. OL - Ones: LT Moore; LG Hatton; C Yanta; RG Thielen; RT Ghirmae. Twos LT Walker; LG Fogel; RT Howerton; RG Hatton; C Sakiri. Both units played well tonight.
DL - Starters were Syncere Massive; David Okie-Dokie; and Kayode Oolaladele - Warkentin and Butler and freshman Herpin were the twos. Hart looked pretty good rushing the passer. I think the DL are going to be good. LB - I noticed Young, Kelly and Coheley making plays. Probably could have played a bit better as a group. DB - Ones were Egbo and Jolley at CB and Moffett and Adams at S. Really impressed with Mukes and freshman Scott Koumado.
Yes, Virginia. We have a kicker. And a punter. Ramsey and Nickels. Upgrades for sure.

The 3-3-5 interest me. Was that the plan all along or is that the result of personnel/recruiting strengths and weaknesses?

The 3-3-5 interest me. Was that the plan all along or is that the result of personnel/recruiting strengths and weaknesses? Great question, Wildcatter. It certainly appears that the coaches are thinking outside the box to use the available personnel in the best possible way. That is certainly heartening.

The 3-3-5 interest me. Was that the plan all along or is that the result of personnel/recruiting strengths and weaknesses? The nickel defense, with in this case including one of the standard 3-3-5 variations of the 5th DB defensive formation, has always been a staple of our coaching staff dating back to the TX Tech days. You're right, it is a mix of coming into the game with your defensive philosophy already game-planned, but also finding the right student-athletes to plug in and play a scheme that best enhances their capabilities. Great observation! Thank you for mentioning it. An Air Raid & RPO style of offense combined with an aggressive 4-3/Nickel base defense makes a great recipe for additional success to year 2 with this amazing staff and student-athletes!

In a 3-3 front, the DL's job is not to get sacks. Their job is to stop the run and clog up the middle. It will allow the linebackers the opportunity to rush the passer more with blitz schemes. The linebackers also have to be good tacklers and be able to move in space.

Nice write up on ACUsports about our special teams. Looks like Ramsey is the real deal as our placekicker with Meschi and Barr learning right now. The only punter named was Nickel, so we really need for him to be consistent and injury free.

Essentially playing 3 DT’s across the line except for in certain down-distance situations or depending on the offense we are playing against.

Really liked the preview on the kicking game on ACUSports.com. I look forward to seeing more position reports in the coming few weeks. I also liked that the preview talked about every one of the members of the kicking game - kickers, punter, and deep snappers. I am not surprised that they did not name any of the kick returners -- that is often a last-minute decision. It was also terrific that they mentioned the key kick coverage guys -- Izaiah Kelley and Trey Adams. These guys are potential starters, yet they are key to kick coverage. I like seeing the BEST tacklers on the kick coverage team - whether they are starters or 3rd-teamers.

The biggest reason I like the idea of a 3-3-5 is that the overall system can create indecision, leading to offensive mistakes. We haven't done as much of this recently, hoping that everyone can hold their assignment in tandem, leading to small wins or an occasional TFL.
Any approach that tries to create confusion or mistakes is welcome in my book.
