The problem with that argument is this, fan interest is at an all time high at the big universities and now they can go out and buy the best players from smaller universities that have proven they can play. The only deterent I can think of is that every time a major university poaches a player from a smaller school then they pay a penalty. Even if the change is initiated by the player, there has to be a penalty. There is a difference between schools who have money to buy the best players, as well as are big enough that fans don't have any type of personal connection or felt loyalty to those players and smaller schools who did take personal interests in players. I agree with RC on this one. It has already hugely affected how I feel about many ACU teams and players. Why should I take an interest in a player that just comes here for an NIL deal or for a particular coach and quickly moves on for something better? Yes, I watch the games, but the dynamic is greatly affected. Personally, I am less and less inclined to spend money on season tickets or give extra money for donations for athletes that just leave. Bigger schools are just like pro sports. That personal dynamic left a long time ago. It is well on its way here at the mid-major level.

Sadly, beginning to feel the same way. Very disappointing. Living three hours away (when traffic is perfect) makes it even worse. Really less attractive to attend away games given both the time and the expense involved. After this year we will have some decisions to make about all of this. Have had some really good times going to games, both home and away, and getting to know many players and some of their families. Becoming less and less of a rewarding experience. Things change, sometimes not for the better.

This makes we wonder where we're headed. Not only with NIL, but on a larger scale. What's to make us think the same thing that happened to the PGA Tour with LIV Golf couldn't happen to the NCAA? An "outside group" approaches the top football schools in the country and offers each $500MM (or more) to leave the NCAA and set up a separate governing body. Those schools only compete against each other in all sports and also benefit from the shared TV revenue (NCAA's revenue last year was $1.29B). And we thought the SEC was a dominating conference.

Very Astute TNcatman. I never thought of something like that. No doubt the bigs would rather have all the pie. Don’t care at all about the other 500 or so colleges and universities.
I can’t help but think that all of this is going to blow up in the coming years.

This probably needs its own thread, but the thing is....the NCAA is the schools themselves. The NCAA is not a third-party entity, it is run by the school presidents. The presidents propose and vote on legislation, rules, contracts, etc. So it would have to be the "big" school presidents all coming together to make that decision and all be on the same page to leave the NCAA. Then, they would have to set up their own association with by-laws, restrictions, an executive director, staff, etc. The NCAA acts as a governing body run by the schools themselves.
We all know it has become about funding more so than ever. The funds that come in via TV contracts as well as the NIL deals. IF the big schools bolt and form their own "more perfect union," then all the other schools will have to cut sports because, as we all know, the money that trickles down helps to fund the smaller sports (usually known as the "Olympic sports"). I also believe there will be lawsuits all over the place from the smaller universities and colleges for breaking contracts, by-laws and all such things. I am not sure the NCAA will go away; we already know it looks WAY different than it used to. What I do know is there is a HUGE MESS of things right now, and I don't know that we will ever go back to "the good 'ole days."

I've never forgotten the fact you'd call my office line just to check on 42's injuries... I know the state of things has to be a bit frustrating. It's frustrating as a parent, but for different reasons I suppose. I'm praying we can field a competitive team that will get the attention of fans and ACU brass.

Reese and your family are one of few remaining personal relationships that we have with players and/or families. For the past couple of decades we have greatly enjoyed these relationships. Sad to see them going away. However, as long as Reese and you guys are there, we will be there. Please tell Mama and the girls hello for us.

What I do know is there is a HUGE MESS of things right now, and I don't know that we will ever go back to "the good 'ole days." Well said, Texas48. I'm with you, I don't think the NCAA is going away. The Basketball tournaments are a huge cash cow in their present form and eliminating the David v Goliath aspect of it would destroy it. The first weekend gets enormous ratings and huge fan interest. (Did you know that more guys get vasectomies the week before than at any other time of the year so that they have an excuse to sit on the couch?) And now, with a big new TV deal looming on the horizon, the women's tournament will have a payout structure that will increase revenues for the rest of us. So, the real issue is football which is wildly profitable for the P4 teams but not so much for everyone else. The trend is now for lesser conferences to become BB conferences and FB playing universities are merging football into one-sport conferences such as the UAC or MVFC, etc. I think this trend will continue. There is a proposal for a FBS playoff on the table now. That will change the landscape and give championship playoffs at every level. I think this will be a good thing and foster more interest. I think I will take your advice and start a new thread sometime over the weekend. I'll move some of these posts over. Thanks to everyone for your insights.
