Just watched Grant Boones interview with Coach Bonneau. You know your program is in a sorry state when you can be so enthused over a LOSS. Highlight some positive things but don't GUSH over a loss, please.

Highlight some positive things but don't GUSH over a loss, please. In another sport gushing might be ok...if the football cats lose to TT in overtime, gushing might be in order. In baseball, not so much. We have the some scholarship limits as all other D1 schools, and BB teams from our conference have taken down B12 and SEC schools already this year. A close loss is encouraging given our poor start, but I agree...gushing is overdoing it.

Hit totals over last 8 games 6,5, 9,11 (in 16),4, 8, 3, 4. Do we see a recurring problem? This team needs extended batting practice. Bring in fastballers and breaking ball specialists. Make your hitters swing at every pitch thrown. If they don't put the ball in play...make em run. If a pitch is over their heads or behind them--make em swing a get a piece of the ball (in batting practice). This teaches hand-eye coordination. When you have a 2 strike count, insist they "choke up" and put the ball in play. No "called" third strikes. Quit swinging for the fences on every pitch. Contact, contact, contact.

A big problem has been Abilene weather. About all the hitting they can do is on the indoor batting cages. Granted, this is not unique to us, but Britt has told me that they sure need to get outside every day.

I don't like the swing at everything approach. Especially making them run for it. The last thing you want to do with a struggling team is get them spiteful against the coaching staff. I have been pleasantly surprised with our pitching this year, but hitting has been horrendous, and defense hasn't been shaky at best. Focus practice time on hitting with confidence, and situational hitting.

You may not like that approach but I've seen it work. The idea came from a retired major leaguer who managed my local High School team. In one year he changed the culture of the worst hitting team to the best hitting team in the league. In fact, he also took one of the poorest hitters his freshman and soph. years and turned him into the best hitter, not only on our team but in the league. There was absolutely no spite for coaches. It turned batting practice into a fun training tool and it turned a perennial losing team into a winning team. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Do the same thing hoping for different results is said to be the culture of insanity. Loosen up, Baptizemcats. Don't be so resistant to a new idea.

Ehh, I also don't like the free swinging approach. We already strike out enough. This isn't little league or high school ball. Make pitchers throw strikes and when they do put the ball in play.
I just wonder if they are getting enough practice against live pitching...though you can't blame all their woes on that.
I think the type of pitching we are facing is just a step up than the past but I was hoping we were signing players that were ready for D1. I am glad to see that we aren't getting absolutely blown out like we did last year and have been losing 'close games' but in the game of baseball any team can beat the other on any given day so I was hoping we wouldn't have 1 win after 12 games.
