Terry Ausborne was the real deal, if grades hadn't gotten in the way. Can you imagine Jabari Butler and Ausborne on either corner for us? Of course, if Terry hadn't left due to grades, we might not have tried so hard to get Jabari. We will never know how Anthony Davis might have been - he never took care of his grades and did not even have a spring practice with ACU, as he was trying to save his grades so he could stay in school. The football evaluation on both might have been spot on - the academic desire was not there.

Might have been noted on here before but Terry Ausborne signed with UL-Monroe. Still ranked as a 2 star, if so might be the best 2 star UL-MONROE ever signed.

Ok, since this is a topic of interest....here are our top ranked recruits since turning D1:
2013. DeAndre Brown .8400 no other recruits were in the 247 Database 2014 Anthony Davis .8111 and Terry Ausborne .8006 (Kris Thigpen rated .8195 but was not attributed to ACU for ranking purposes). 2015 Junior Henderson .8111 and Jairus Hall ..7777 (Late addition Hanner Shipley rated .8367) 2016 Donnell Dunn .8311 and Emoree Giddings .8205
Brown and Henderson have performed certainly performed well. Hall, we will never know due to his tragic accident. Ausborne and Davis might have been spot on but grades got the best of them.
In 2016 we had 10 players from the 247 data base...that's more than in any previous year, and way up from 2013 when only 1 player was on their screen. We did have players in each of those years that were rated by at least one of the major services but their coverage was not broad enough for 247 to do a composite average. I'm not sure why Butler wasn't included from last year though. ESPN and Rivals both rated him as a 3 star prospect and Scout had him as a two star. That should have been enough for him to receive a numerical average from 247, but it didn't happen.

In fact, I raised my voice a little, well, I started yelling at the guy doing the story on tv and was explaining to my oldest son what was going on until I realized he was on his laptop doing his homework with his earphones on, completely oblivious to what I was saying. Has this happened to anyone, even without the earphones on? Before the Pro Bowl, an ESPN announcer was doing a piece on one of the Panthers who had grown up in one of the projects in Miami. Maybe someone who watched it can help me out with the names of the two because I can't remember who either were. I turned it to something else because I could care less about the Pro Bowl.
Towards the end the guy lets this pearl of wisdom out. To most all the guys here in the projects, sports are the only way out. EXCUUUSE me? Do WHAAAT? Is this the message your sending these kids? It's no wonder some of them that do make it to the college level can't make the grade. Try this one on for size, Mr. ESPN announcer. Hey, kids, you know those books they give you at the beginning of each semester. Try opening them up, read what's inside, and give it your best to comprehend that which you read. If you don't understand, ask your teacher, that's why they call them teachers. A sure fire way out of the projects if I ever seen one. Rant over

Not sure that is a way out of the projects either. Having a rich father is the best way to get out.

I was sorry to see these two players fall victim to poor grades. I don't know if it was from lack of effort on their part or whether they simply didn't receive adequate preparation for college level work prior to arriving on campus. I do know that we have a great academic support center on campus and, I believe, athletes have access to peer tutors for most subjects. I know it's been emphasized often enough that playing football on scholarship is a means to pay for an education. For all but a select few it is not a minor league for the NFL. And the education the scholarship pays for requires the student-athlete to engage his brain in the classroom.
I have been watching tweets from another of our fb players who clearly gets this...talks about ideas his profs are presenting in class as much as about football, women or Whataburger. That's what it's about.
I am hopeful that the guys in this year's recruiting class understand that football is an extracurricular activity and secondary to academic success so we won't need to wonder how good they might have been if only they hadn't fallen victim to grades.

Well said, Oscar. I loved what basketball player Isaiah Tripp said last night on Twitter. In answering why he choose ACU, the training he would receive in his field of study was high on his list. I, personally didn't do this well when I was in school and ofttimes wish I could have a "do over." Seldom happens in life.

Mark Bruno, safety from Cy Ranch says he's committed to ACU. Maybe another walk on.

I don't monitor prospects our coaches follow as much as Mavsman, Wildcatter and probably a few others, but one thing that has jumped out at me over the past two years has been that Nick Smith was the guy who followed the most prospects on the defensive side of the ball, usually long before Darian Dulin or the others joined in. His leadership in recruiting was particularly evident last year when we were searching for DB's to transfer in after National Signing Day. We are once again in search of at least 2 additional defensive players to add between now and Fall. I wonder who will take the initiative now that Smith has gone to Nebraska?

I have noticed that Cody Moore and Steve Thrash seem to be the most present on twittter promoting the team and recruiting. I am guessing Coach Moore will pick up where Nick Smith left off.

You might be right. Steven Thrash has done for the offense what Nick Smith was doing for the D for several years. Cody Moore was recruiting coordinator at Central Arkansas while he was D Line ooach and was on the recruiting staff at Arkansas before moving here, so he would be ideal to pick up Nick Smith's duties.

Coach Moore was also the first to recruit Josh while he was at UCA.
