I just saw a Tweet that said that ACU had gotten Carlton LaFrance, a 6-3, 255 DE from Saddleback CC in California. I saw on the Saddleback site that he played one season at Antelope Valley in 2013 and must have laid out a year. He shows to have a 4.63 40, pretty solid for a DE! He is from W. Jefferson HS in Louisiana originally. Looks like a good pick up at a position where we are in critical need of depth. I was a little surprised we signed anyone this early though. I assumed we would take a look at the market later this spring. There's always a surge in transfers from big schools after spring practice and players realize they aren't in line for playing time come fall. Coach C said we would look for a DL, DB, and one additional "best available" player. So it looks like maybe a couple more transfers or late high school signings could happen sometime before August.

I wanted to point out that Mark Bruno, the safety that must be a PWO that committed to us after signing day, has a teammate that says he is headed to ACU and I wonder if he is also walking-on. Noah Offutt is also a safety and was first team all district (whereas Bruno did not receive any post-season accolades).
As far as Lafrance, we had him in for a visit before signing day and I assume he was waiting to see if he would receive interest from other programs before committing to us.

Another Preferred Walk on? I assume anyone that says they are 'committed' to us and they aren't announced by the ACU football account must be a walk-on.

6'3" 190. Seems to have good hands and a knack for the ball. Not a burner but maybe a possession receiver. Didn't shy away from contact and wasn't afraid to block. HUDL says 4.39 speed but looks more like 4.6 or more. Good pick up.

Walk ons like Perez and Johnson are really critical for our depth. Neither will help much next year but both look to have potential down the road.

Incidentally, Burnet head coach Kurt Jones that is quoted in the story is an ACU alum, played d-back for the 'Cats and graduated in the mid-90's. Kurt is a protege of Bob Shipley and stayed in Burnet when Bob left to work at Brownwood.

Seeing Noah Offutt's name above got me thinking. Noah Offutt is not a terribly common name. There is a Noah Offutt who played for a season at Lubbock Cooper HS and was pretty good - starting as a sophomore at one of the top 4A programs in the state. Then, a Noah Offutt shows up playing, and playing rather well, for Cypress Ranch the past 2 years. There is an ACU grad, Brian Offutt, who was the Associate Minister at the Monterey CofC in Lubbock who took a job as the Preaching Minister at the West Houston CofC 2 years ago. Brian has a son currently here at ACU - Nathan. Brian is the son of former ACU Trustee George Offutt. There is a Noah Offutt enrolled at ACU for next fall from Cypress, TX. Looks to me like this Noah Offutt is a third generation ACU kid who will be walking on here in the fall.
