Not having seen him in person, what kind of a back is he--power, speed, good hands? He reminds me a lot of former AHS/ACU great Jerale Badon. His running style is eerily similar, even though one was a slot WR and the other is a RB. Enough speed to play, but there are lots of faster players. Jerald's game was built on cat-like quickness and uncanny balance. Jerale also had an unmatched work ethic, like no one I have every seen before. Smith moves a lot like Jerale did, he's just much bigger. If he can get near Badon's work ethic, he'll be special. With all that said, I wouldn't call him a speed back. He's an all around back, but he's not Zeke (lacks the elite top end speed). More like Emmitt. Was looking back for our thoughts on Dorrell. Uncovered this gem about Abram Smith. Boy was this right on target.

However, before this season, the new OC decided to move him back to offense. Pretty talented guy for sure, I’d say.

Knowing the history of good football players outta Abilene High, was Dorrel’s showing any interest in Da’King Thomas? Regardless, I hope Coach KP does! Go Wildcats!!

I guess it worked out well for him. The Abilene kid that got away that I never understood was Dion Novil from Wylie. He wanted to come to ACU, but Dorrel would only offer him a partial scholarship (which was Dorrel's MO in his first couple years and is a terrible approach when recruiting for kids to come to such an expensive school). So Novil ended up going to UNT, where he has been All-Conference multiple times. Patterson talked in his introduction about loving West Texas, so I hope he can get the local kids here.

In this athletics world of instant gratification the Abram Smith story sticks out. He barely played in his 1st seasons at Baylor, changed positions in an effort to get on the field, then changed back to RB his senior year (5th year) and had a breakout year. At least two different years there were rumors that he wanted to transfer but he stuck it out (to our great dismay). Stories like his and John David Baker who almost never set foot on the field for 4 years and then had a record breaking last year at ACU might be the anomaly in today's world. But it surely worked in JDB's life (current passing coordinator at bowl bound Ole Miss) and maybe will be for Abram Smith too. Nothing but admiration for those two young men.

I agree 100% about both of them. During the Big 12 Championship it was interesting to hear the back story on Abram Smith moving back over to the offensive side. The new OC needed his style of RB, and someone mentioned to him that Smith had been a RB, so they converted him. I love watching him play, and I think he could potentially be in the NFL next year. He reminds me a lot of Tracy James, who I think could have gotten a lot more attention at a bigger school, but he also stuck it out at ACU and even chose ACU over some Power 5 schools.

Another side to Abram’s story (second hand) is that he told his parents that he wanted to transfer to ACU. A couple of his AHS friends were here at the time. But his folks said no. They expected him to keep his commitments. So he went back. That’s some really good parenting there.
