I agree with Bogey. Rb is an area where we need help. If I am the new coach on the first day after the dead perious I am all over the local guy we keep hearing wants to come here but committed to Tulsa because we didn't offer. 247sports.com/Player/Abram-Smith-81148Seems like a no brainer unless there is some reason coaches didn't feel he would be a good fit with the ACU culture. I believe this kid was just contacted by UT and is discussing a visit to Austin. I just don't see the kid ending up at the FCS level. Dude is that good; however, if he did stay in Abilene he could come in on day 1 and start and probably be an all conference player Short of speaking for the kid ACU has a shot if handled right. Spent thanksgiving and this past weekend with him. (He has dated my niece for about year and half or so and is good friends with our son). Kid is a great kid! Offers from Texas tech, army, Tulsa, and SFA. Has been contacted by Texas. Playing early is important to him as he does not want to sit for years to play. When asked about staying here he said it would be nice as niece will go there/has another year to go in ha and he would consider it because he thinks he can play earlier. but has "never even been contacted once by ACU." How does that happen? Btw this kid is the all time leading rusher to come out of Abilene! You at least talk to him!

Lack of academic accountability bothers me a lot. This is a problem that goes beyond the football staff. We have an academic support program for student athletes run out of the Athletic Director's office that is supposed to work with coaches and players. I'm not sure they are doing their job. Only coaches can enforce consequences for missing class. Academic advisors can only put players in classes where they have best chance to succeed. It's up to the players to get to class. And it's up to coaches to make sure that happens. Players have been without accountability for four weeks...you do the math. There was not a lot of accountability before the dismissal either! What program does not have mandatory study halll and tutors? ACU under Collums is one!

Looks like UT won't be in the picture as they had two big time backs commit this past week. I think he can go to Tulsa and play pretty quickly as well, but if it is true that no one from ACU has contacted him that is incredible. That type of athlete doesn't come out of Abilene every year and you need to be on him in junior high to see if you have a chance.

Don't be too hard on the previous coaching staff. Remember that Abram had some injury issues that kept a lot of schools at arm's length until his amazing senior year.

Yes he has had the injury issues, but this dude is the type of player that a D2 or FCS team absolutely takes the risk with even with the injury issues because of the upside that he brings if/when healthy. A lot of D1 teams will just yank those offers anytime there is an injury leaving a void for FCS/D2 schools to fill. I would think the injury issue would be even more incentive to get on him, knowing that the D1's are waiting to see if he can get healthy. All in all, I hope the kid does well wherever he ends up. Seems like a really good kid.

Not having seen him in person, what kind of a back is he--power, speed, good hands?

Not having seen him in person, what kind of a back is he--power, speed, good hands? I have only seen him play in person twice, but he appeared to be an every down back that had the speed to get to the corner and run away from people but also did well between the tackles. When you are that type of player at the high school level, coaches typically have you doing a bit of everything. I did see him on a couple of screen plays and always seemed to hold up well in the passing game both blocking and pass catching. He is not a "scat back" that is only used for a change of pace.

Just took some time to see who is following Adam Dorrel on Twitter. Some really quality athletes are there. Don't know if they were following before AD was named our coach or not but if we were to get a few it would be great. I'm wondering if any Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska high school head coaches will still refer their players to AD now that he's at ACU. Not many Texas coaches following him yet.

Not having seen him in person, what kind of a back is he--power, speed, good hands? He reminds me a lot of former AHS/ACU great Jerale Badon. His running style is eerily similar, even though one was a slot WR and the other is a RB. Enough speed to play, but there are lots of faster players. Jerald's game was built on cat-like quickness and uncanny balance. Jerale also had an unmatched work ethic, like no one I have every seen before. Smith moves a lot like Jerale did, he's just much bigger. If he can get near Badon's work ethic, he'll be special. With all that said, I wouldn't call him a speed back. He's an all around back, but he's not Zeke (lacks the elite top end speed). More like Emmitt.

Abram is really, really good. Came up to the varsity at the end of his freshmen year. On his first 3 touches, he scored touchdowns.
Runs very well between the tackles. Has enough speed to get around the edge too. He is not a burner, per se, but he does have plenty of speed. He did not catch the ball out of the backfield too often, but he does have solid hands.
Tore his acl at the end of his sophomore season, but did not miss any time his junior year.
If we could get him, it would be a fantastic start

Spent New Year's Eve with Abram and he officially decommittted to Tulsa yesterday. Good news! Bad news we will be trying to stop him in 2 years. He is committing to Baylor today. Working on getting there this semester as he can graduate early. Been told he can compete for playing time next year if he can come in now. Still high on playing time so heck at least offer and let him turn us down.
