A question for those who are following recruiting.....
Will we follow the same pattern in 2018 as we did in 2017? Use a lot a partial scholarships for incoming HS players to build roster depth and focus our full-scholarship efforts on picking up drop downs during the spring? Or was that strategy based on getting a late start last year and the obvious need to flesh out the roster?

My memory fails me but were we ever this active in the Cullums era with offers this early? No. I wonder if this is due to a larger recruiting budget that permits coaches to get out in the state earlier or a change in approach/philosophy. Another big change I see is Collums era always featured offers to blue chip FCS player with recruiting service stars. Not so much with the new staff.

Or was that strategy based on getting a late start last year and the obvious need to flesh out the roster? After talking with Dorrel at length last week, it's my impression that this year is an anomaly. He needs some critical guys who can play now - DBs for example - but in future years he will be offering some of both to HS players while keeping a handful of full scholarships for drop downs. He was adamant that he won't be recruiting JCs because the academic jump is typically too much for them. Adam said that he has gone to NDSU and JMU and picked the brains of their staffs about recruiting and that the best programs split scholarships approximately 42-42. That's his goal - to have around 83 scholarship players. I am am excited that he is offering players early. I think that will definitely pay off.

While we are Cobbs' only offer, Lisenby and Rucker both have FBS interest and will probably have stars by the time their senior year is done. A big reason they don't have stars yet is that they still have to play their senior year. Also there are quite a few others we've offered that the same interest as well. It seems like we are recruiting like coach Bingham does in Track and Field, jumping on more of those kids that are on the verge of being highly recruited but jumping on them earlier before they've recived a lot on interest.

I also think a few things hurt our staff in recruiting last year.
1. They had a late start
2. There were a lot of holes on the team, but very few players were graduating from the roster
The 2018 class has many more players graduating (at least 20).
I love how this staff has been on the recruiting trail and much more transparent than Collums staff. We never had a junior day under Collums, but this year had over 70 recruits on campus. We typically never offered players this early, or at least, never heard about the offers. When a player is offered, typically 6-7 other coaches start following that player.
I feel like we are finally recruiting as a D1 football program. Now to get an ACU recruiting page on 247sports.....

It really seems to me that we are going after kids that are on the verge of being highly recruited. If we can get some of these guys interested early and remain relevant over the next 9 months to them it can only improve our chances. I also trust the coaching ability of both AD and coach jacksons ability to coach these kids to a new level of ability in the next level. After watching some practice especially jackson brings an energy that makes players want to play for him.

I feel like these coaches are acting like D1 coaches, which is what recruits like. Having Junior days and putting offers out early make the recruits feel like they are being recruited by a D1 school.
I will always find it amusing when my son committed to ACU just a little over 2 years ago. He was offered his junior year, which was rare for ACU to do. He stayed in contact with the coaches, and several coaches including his position coach visited him at home. When he called his ACU position coach to give his verbal commitment, my son said, "Hey coach, I wanted to let you know that I am committing to ACU," and the coach responded, "Who is this?" He didn't even have my son's name in his phone. And nothing was ever tweeted by any coaches about it, nothing was ever said. In fact, when I first started looking at this board around that time, no one on here seemed to know he had committed... they speculated, but they didn't know (especially because my son is very private and didn't really mention anything big about it on twitter).

I think a lot of the guys that generate that type of 'recruiting service' interest do so during the summer at camps and combines. Now the guys that are blue chip P5 talent, the 4-5 star players may already have name recognition but the lower star players still develop rankings later in the process. I think the fact that we have so many names at such an early stage is why that may appear to be the case when comparing Collums era to Dorrel. I may be wrong but lets see come December if those same players aren't more widely recognized.

Speaking about the 247 board, how would we get one? Do they automatically make it for us or do we have to pay for one?

As far as a 247 board, I honestly, do NOT know. I actually emailed their admin about that. I never heard anything back. I am not sure if that is something that coaches have to request, if we have to be officially D1, or if we as a catchat group keep pestering them to put one on there

Thanks for the insights, guys.
I love that Coach D visited top programs to pick brains and that a balance of full and partial scholarships adding up to a roster of 83 is being approached planfully. Getting offers out early is a definite sign of progress, as is Jr. Day.
I hadn't really thought through the fact that stars are assigned during summer camps and into early fall. This explains why the old staff offered more guys with recruiting stars since they offered late after stars were assigned. I have noticed that several of the guys we have offered do, in fact, have FBS offers at mid major schools like SMU and Bowling Green.
Really looking forward to seeing results on the field. I am sure it will take a couple of years to complete the transition, but expect we will see progress this fall....
