Every year about this time there is a debate about the value of recruiting "stars" and team rankings. It might be fun to track future on-the-field success of this year's top ranked teams at different levels. I used 247's Composite rank.
Recruiting Rank and W-L Record
P5 1(1). Alabama 2(2). Ohio State 3(3). Georgia 4(4). USC 5(5). Michigan 6(6). Florida State 7(7). LSU 8(8). Oklahoma 9(9). Auburn 10(10). Florida
G5(non P5 FBS) 1(59). Memphis 2(61). Boise State 3(62). Cincinnati 4(67). BYU 5(69). Houston 6(70). Florida Atlantic 7(73). San Diego State 8(74). Colorado State 9(75). Southern Miss 10(76) UTSA
FCS 1(128). Harvard 2(129). Austin Peay 3(132). Yale 4(133). Eastern Washington 5(135). Mercer 6((136). Penn 7(137). Villanova 8(138). NDSU 9(139). Montana State 10(140). Sam Houston
Since we are FCS, for comparative purposes here is Hero Sports take on the top 5:
FCS Hero Sports 1. Harvard 2. James Madison 3. NDSU 4. Sam Houston 5. Yale 6. Eastern Washington 7. Jacksonville State 8. Mercer 9. Villanova 10. Kennesaw State
Overall, I predict three years from now the P5 national champ will come from the top 10. G5 rankings will be pretty good predictions about who wins their conference and makes a decent bowl. At the FCS level, I think Hero does a better job than 247, but rank will still be less likely to predict success than at the other levels.
In the SLC Hero Sports has us behind only Sam Houston and Stephen F Austin. Let's see how that works out for us in a couple of years.

I guess I will put this one here. None of our recruits even show up on this list. Does that mean I believe we are far behind on our recruiting; or, we don't have a good recruiting class? No, it doesn't. This list didn't include JUCOs or other transfers. It does at least give some perspective though. I know some of us will be watching what our coaching turnovers do for our recruiting. I trust that the coaches who helped picked the kids we got, this year, did a good job. Still, I will be happily cautious until I see the results on the field come Fall. I think 2019 will be a tough season. herosports.com/fcs/recruiting-2019-football-southland-conference-ajaj

I compared our commit Wyatt Tate to all the O-linemen on Hero’s list. Seems Wyatt is rated higher on both 247 and Rivals than any of the OL on the list. So that’s how good their list is. If you read the fine print, however, you see that they rank the recruits by the supposed number of FBS or G5 offers they got. In other words, the list is baloney. They do say that they will update the list to include transfers, etc after signing day.

So here's my predictions pre-signing day:
UCA has added some elite playmakers to go with their already great size and athleticism. They'll win the best in class awards for our conference. SFA, which has had an enormous recruiting cycle, will come in second. But are all those players academically eligible? They certainly scared others off. Incarnate Word continues to be a threat. Just because of the shear volume of players that they've signed, they'll take third in the poll. Nichols class is solid and will be rated higher than ours.
The recruiting services will sleep on us again, putting us at the bottom of the Southland pack, but I think when all the smoke clears that our OL and TE recruits will be among the conference's bests. The schedule in 2019 will be tough, but if our OL gets off to a better start than last year, we've got more than enough talent to vie for a playoff spot (with some good breaks).
If we improve quite a bit (read: Luke Anthony begins to take off, our seniors excel, our receivers find a groove, etc.), we might even get our very own 247 page in recruiting in 2020.

I doubt the bit about a 247 page but thought you put that in jest anyway.

If we improve quite a bit (read: Luke Anthony begins to take off, our seniors excel, our receivers find a groove, etc.), we might even get our very own 247 page in recruiting in 2020. Yup, recruiting services slept on us. I looked down the team rankings list on 247. We are 10th out of the 11 teams in our conference. SFA finished first in our conference and was the number 2 ranked team in the nation. 24) on,y lists kids that are ranked on Major sites though. So their ranking for us is based on three recruits. Hero Sports has been drooling over SFA and to a lesser extent UCA. Several other SLC schools got a shout out cromHeeo Sports but we weren’t in that list. Hero Spirts relies on number of FBS offers reported by recruits. Those offers might or might not be real..that is some schools offer hundreds of recruits but can sign on,y a fraction of those they have offered so the offer might well not be actionable. Rankings aside, I like what I see in this class. We recruited big framed O linemen with good feet who look to have the potential to help us this fall and down the road. We recruited a couple of big wide receiver targets and we may have more tight ends than anyone in the conference. The QB we recruited has potential and Anderson is a work horse power back who may be good enough to earn snaps this fall despite the very talented guys we have returning. I wish we had signed a big DT to replace the big Gator, at least one more CB, and a wr with separation speed. McConnel might fill this role but his history of injuries makes me nervous.

I also like the academic level of so many of our signees. Looking at some of the local guys in my area that signed, I'll be a little surprised if they can all handle the academic requirements of college while also playing football.

I doubt the bit about a 247 page but thought you put that in jest anyway. You read that right. That was totally in jest. I do wonder, though, about how not having a true 247 page might feed a false perception (either for recruits or for families). Granted, if someone only looking at optics--and can't see that we're building a solid contender--that might not be the kind of kid that we want. But I hate not having a page for the school's sake. There is a marketing dimension that goes with our program and that's all about having our school name in front of people. And it's pretty surprising to see other conference teams that have this 247 coverage coverage when we don't.

I went through all 10 of the SLC recruiting classes. In my opinion, UCA is the clear winner. SFA and Sam recruited some high school speed and each picked up good DB potential. IMO when a guy decommits from a P5 school, it’s almost never his idea. Typically he’s an academic risk. Of course that never stopped those two. Other than UCA, we got the most immediate help and I put our class as solid if not flashy. I like what IUW did.
Keep in mind that our staff recruits with a purpose. They are looking for certain attributes and don’t care much about rankings.

A general thought about recruiting this year for 2021 Fall and 2022 spring athletics. We are expanding our footprint big time. A number of football recruits and transfers are from previously unrecruited areas and programs. Our JUCO footprint that was once only Texas and Oklahoma now includes west and east coast schools. Our transfers are coming from all over. Not sure how many "players" are included in the group but the coverage area is quite large. In basketball we are bringing in a Texas all-stater in Jackson and 3 foreign players who all appear to have upside. On the womens' side in basketball we are bringing in some high, high quality freshmen from Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas plus 3 good grad transfers all of whom should see important minutes next year. Tennis (both men and women) is expanding with foreign players (lots of Spanish speakers--Nunez has to be a plus there) and some of the top Texas players on the men's side. Golf added a couple of foreign players (England & South Africa) plus a top Texas (and area) recruit for 2022. Volleyball seems to have gotten 3 very good HS players (one from Arizona) and our grad transfers look good also (not thru yet). Wilson continues to recruit California well and brings in good players each year for soccer. Baseball recruited well last year and after the season we are having this year ought to bring in more quality (and if we can get to a regional our recruiting will get a huge jump). Jarod Cook has always brought in top recruits for the throwing events, our X country teams seem to be getting better under Jarvis and with some sprinting additions (Marshall is a great start) we ought to see this program get more and more competitive. Softball still needs some quality players (especially pitchers) but Farler has a larger area of expertise in recruiting the west, so maybe we'll see some gains there. Overall--we're starting to get players in all sports from a large area of the country and are seeing gains with foreign recruiting (need some more quality African runners). We'll see how this expansion works out but I'm glad to see us reaching out other areas of the country. Now we've got to get our area stars on board too. Go Cats.
