The Engineering and Physics Department is a crown jewel for the university with national and even international impact. The work of the atom smashers and the NEXT Lab are truly at the top of important research. The cooperation of Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, and more is truly an outstanding accomplishment for ACU, and not often found in many universities, especially at the high level of research underway.

It’s particularly interesting and gratifying that computer science is involved. Our administrative setup has computer science under COBA. The other departments are part of Arts and Sciences. There are often turf issues when departments from have not colleges want to work with well heeled colleges.

You are exactly correct about potential turf wars and they are often even within the same college, i.e. Arts and Sciences, but ACU NEXT Lab actually leverages the cooperation between Departments and colleges for a huge advantage. This is an advantage for the progress of the research and a huge advantage for the students.

This is an advantage for the progress of the research and a huge advantage for the students. It isn’t limited to small colleges. Turf wars exist at major universities as well. I speak from experience in universities big and small. I’m glad the ACU NEXT lab has found ways to promote inter departmental research. In many ways the boundaries between academic departments and various colleges is based on academic history and tradition. Life in the real world isn’t as clear cut, often transcending the boundaries of the various disciplines.

American Nuclear Society News Magazine, December 2020, has a full page article (page 29) about ACU's trail blazing molten salt reactor research. Very cool.

Pretty cool moment for ACU: linkIn addition to the discovery of gravity waves winning a Nobel Prize, and having an ACU professor help develop critical software for the detector, we also had four (4) undergraduates who worked on this project.

Go to acunextlab.org and watch first video. It is only 3&1/2 minutes long.
