Cap'n is onto something here. The transfer market has actually been pretty good to ACU. I think that transfers come to ACU to fill gaps in the depth chart and that certainly appears to be the case with ACU:
On offense, you can make a case that J Lee (6 starts) and Tumblesen (4 starts) have started enough to move into the offensive starter category. Plus, Acres has played in 5 games, with 2 starts -- all early in the season. If Harmon has indeed been injured all year, as we suspect, he might still be able to get a injury RS.
On defense, in the "played a lot" category, there are several additional transfers: Freeny (1 start), Gayden (played 1st 2 games, then injured - possible injury RS), Robinson, McKnight, B Hill, Goffney, Duah (has played the past 2 games after injury).
In the "disappointment transfer" category would be: Klayman (2 games); Dean (3 games -- currently injured); Z Terry (1 game); Marshall (1 game); Luna (1 game); B Miller (1 game); and Q Lewis (2 games).
JC transfers at ACU: Bergdoll*, Tumblesen*, T Parker*, Lee*, Lofton*, L Jones, Kier*, Gayden*, Laryea*, Stone*, McKnight, Freeny*, Robinson*, B Hill, Duah, Goffney*, Klayman, Z Terry, Marshall, Luna, Miller
Transfers from 4-year schools: McCrary*, Hohenstein*, Backman*, Russolillo*, McConnell*, Acres*, Ortega*, J Parker*, Dean, Lewis
Since ACU rarely prints a 2-deep roster, I have gone back and tried to make best guesses at the 2-deep for the most of the season. The players marked with an * have started or been a backup for at least a few games this season. Somewhere around 20 transfers have started or played a role in the 2-deep this year, which is really not that bad.
For what it's worth, here's the link to the ACU Game Notes (on the Nicholls State site) for this week. Below is this week's depth chart.
And I think we have to better with transfers in general (and not simply JUCO transfers). This landscape is continuing to evolve, and the rules are changing slightly to keep players from leaving for any and every reason. But you don't have to look any further than SMU to see what a difference transfers can make. The entire trajectory of the Mustangs has changed by getting serious about transfer recruiting.
in our conference, the huge winner by a landslide is Sam. They buckled down and secured 6 high level transfers. All are all listed in their two-deep. That's:
their 2 starting DL (both Jrs)
a RT (and his backup, a redshirt So)
a reserve corner
their third string RB (4 star, UT transfer, So)
Only two of these players, the backup corner and the starting OT, are graduating. When you add their two freshman who are contributing (DE Jevon Leon and WR Ife Adeyi), you can see how they've completely overhauled last year's team.
Before we throw our transfer recruiting under the bus, let’s take a closer look ... That’s a lot of guys playing pretty well. Offense - Starters McCrary III (injured) Hohenstein Backman Russollilo Offense - Others who’ve played a lot Bergdoll Tumbleson T Parker Lee McConnell Defense - Starters Ihegworo Carter Lofton Defense - Others who’ve played a lot Ortega Jones (injured) Kier J Parker Special Teams Larya Stone
I'm not wanting to throw any players under the bus. I'm only pointing out that if ACU had any of those big six transfers from Sam (and that's just last year's transfers), we'd be in totally different place. We had needs at these same positions, sought transfers, and got good players. But Sam got conference-leading D-linemen. They solved their O-line problems. We were certainly close on this front, but couldn't seal the deal with a few prospects.
Hadn't thought of the "funding the program" aspect. How does that work? General ACU population tuition goes to general ACU programs but walk on football players tuition goes to the football program or were you just speaking "in general?"

Bogey, tuition revenue from walkon athletes goes to the general fund of the University, BUT there is also some money that is pushed back to the athletic programs to help encourage them to encourage walkons. In some of the programs that do not receive the full allotment of scholarships (track and field, for instance), there is often an incentive that provides extra scholarship money to the program if you bring in a certain number of walkon athletes.
Walkon athletes are also very important to keep Title IX numbers in balance. I remember talking to the track head coach 2 years ago -- at that time, he had 32 women walking on his team and 8 men. He NEVER cut any women from the team, but he rarely kept more than 8-10 walkon men on the squad.

This 2-deep has little to do with reality. On offense S Anderson is starting at RG. Acres hasn’t been on the field in 2 games. Qua’Shawn is out for the year. Kuyatsemi is not a DT. Ihegworo is the starter at DT. Makoni Pole is a DT not a DE. It’s all messed up.

I agree that great programs are built with freshmen that will stay with a program 4 to 5 years. However, in a state like Texas there is a great pool of step down and bounce back players from FBS programs who want to come back home and this pool should not be ignored, particularly for players with 3 plus years of eligibility remaining,

For me he still gets the benefit of the doubt for another year at least. He's gotten us to being a .500 team which is a lot better than where we were at just 3 or 4 years ago. I would still like to see improvement next year and get around 7 or 8 wins. If in year 5 we're still just getting 6 or 7 wins I think it's fair to ask if he's failed and if we need to move on.
With a bye week, I expect much of the staff to hit the recruiting trail tomorrow to talk with our current commits, others that have already come in for visits and still others that we have interest in. I am interested to see if any of our coaches make a trip out to Arizona. Cleary earlier this summer, the staff, specifically Coach Brown recruited that state hard. Hopefully we will get some traction on where they are and who they are visiting with.
What ACU needs to do is look a lot closer to these local kids from smaller schools who have turned a program around. Now are contenders in their division. They are doing it on the ground and in the air. Such as Red Oak, Midlothian just to name a couple of programs. I have watched these teams in action and they have runningbacks and defensive backs.
