I am not sure I would say we are "stacked" at WR. McConnell and Clark are solid. Neece disappeared late in the season. Harmon did not play. Lewis and T. Williams showed some promise. Brooks-Wess and Dav. Johnson were used more as a punt returners than as WRs. When Blaylock got in, he looked lost. Not sure what we have in Myrick or McCasland. If you compare our WR corp to that of others teams in the SLC, we are down near the bottom. Yes there is talent, and we have more speed than we did in 2019. However, for whatever reason, we didn't get to see all of that talent. Personally, I would like to sign a player that is as good as Clark and McConnell. The staff is looking for additions, both HS and transfers, so we will see what happens. In my mind, the separation between the top-tier Southland schools (UCA, SELA, Nicholls, and SFA) and ACU is that their #1 targets seem more dangerous in open space. These teams seem to create more havoc on the outside with very little scheme. While ACU seems to run a timing/possession oriented passing game, the top schools seem to have more players that can break tackles, win jump balls, and run away from defenders. Receivers like these give a QB such confidence that they can make a play. Schools like Sam, Northwestern, HBU, and UIW have similar sized receivers to what ACU has recruited. And I would agree that the current WR group at ACU does have more speed at this position. The next two months of recruiting will be a dogfight. Every team is battling for recruits and transfers. Teams like McNeese, which has had their entire program ravaged by a hurricane, are doing remarkably well all things considered. I'm very curious to see how all the dust will settle. While we've had some very talented receivers, I don't recall us having any that win jump balls - i.e. the big, physical type guys. Knox, Gates, Radway had straight-line, high-end speed. Gabriel had speed, vision, and agility. Fink and Badon had great hands, route-running and the ability to get open and make clutch plays. Harmon, Blaylock, and Neece have the size (height) to be that big receiver. The more I think about it, the more I want a receiver who can "Moss" DBs.

Not many are likely to have been around to watch a receiver we had years ago named Ronnie Vinson. He was more punishment for the defensive back than the defense was to him. He would go up and grab the ball and come down on the DBs with all elbows and knees, crushing them. You could watch as the game wore on how the defense sort of avoided getting under Ronnie when he went up. He was a truly punishing wide receiver. I would love to see our receivers deal more punishment than they receive.
Going back to the Jim Lindsey days was this report:
Putnam, writing in “They Don’t Play No Mullets Down There” in the next issue of Sports Illustrated, said, “Go down to Abilene, Texas, sometime and catch Jim Lindsey, the nation’s all-time total offense leader. Not small college, not big college, but all college … Lindsey is a God-fearing riverboat gambler, and you don’t find that kind everywhere. He is a reverent man in a reverent school – Abilene Christian – but he tends to forget the Sermon on the Mount when he goes into battle, like Saturday night as he passed for three touchdowns against the percentage players of Arkansas State, the AP’s very top small school, No. 1 in the NCAA division.”
Oh, the three touchdowns were thrown to Ronnie Vinson.

However, before the season I would have said we were and the reason I wouldn’t say we are now is because lack of production. Not because of lack of talent. I think the talents there, but maybe more downfield passing and taking shots may help production.

Add in Bill Lockey at TE and Pat Holder at WR and you had a pretty potent passing game.

That era might be our all time team in the passing game. They were fun to watch, that is for sure. We have had other wide open periods when the passing game was filled with fireworks, just not lately.

McConnell is transferring Where do you discovery such information? A computer search just now returned nothing. You must have a different source... which is a good deal.
