So far our defense looks ok, but we have 5 fouls to their 0. I hope we don't get into early foul trouble. Morris finally hit a 3 pointer. Turnovers have been big for Lamar.

Even with the turnovers and us taking way more shots than them, the game is tied up at 14 now.

We are still struggling with fouls and shooting over-all. This is proving to be a defensive battle so far and the second half will be interesting.

It was an interesting final couple of minutes to the first half. We got a couple of fast breaks and almost began to get some good separation, but Lamar keeps hanging in. Except for FTs,we have moved ahead of them in the shot percentage and just barely ahead of them in the rebounds. I kept looking at Lamar's schedule and felt that their record could be deceiving. Again, let's see what happens as the game progresses. Why does Kohl look like he was in a bar fight?

Pretty sloppy game so far. Our shooting is questionable. Hopefully the second half is better.
We seemed to have changed during the season. We used to move to create open shots and now we seem to force a lot of possessions inside. I would like to see Gayman set up for some threes. I suspect we will see the ball moving around the circle a lot faster in the upcoming half. We really need the three to return to a more used weapon.

So far we have a tale of two halves. We have woken up offensively and are shooting better while still creating turnovers. Let's keep it up!

I hope we don't have the slow starts against our tougher SLC competition, but still nice opening to conference play.

Lamar was very smart in the 1st half. Lamar knew they could not match uo with us 1 on 1. They started out in zone and we played right into it. 2 or 3 guys came into the game from off the bench and immediately took 3's (all were misses). Lamar got out of it, and every time they did, we made a run. In the 2nd half, we started hitting and our defense forced them into a lot of turnovers.
Other notes- Kopp and Golding got into near the ACU bench in the 1st half. Golding was hot! He told the official he can't talk to me.
The tech on Gayman was dumb. Gayman did his signature move after making a 3 and the official called a tech. Gayman didn't say anything or do anything, but the official thought he was taunting. Bad call
Golding is a totally different coach than he was just a few years ago. In the past, if a player made a mistake, Joe would pull the player and then yell as the player walked back to his seat. Oh, he still pulls players, but he rarely says much. For instance, ACU was up by 18 or 20 and Daniels came flying down the court and threw up a ridiculous shot from under the basket. Pleasant picked up the rebound and put it back in. After a minute, Joe pulled Daniels. He didn't say anything, just kind of gave him a look.
This team goes as two players go. On offense, it is Mason. On defense, it is Miller. Miller sets the tone for the rest of the team. When he starts defending, Daniels, Mason and Simmons do too. It is so fun to watch.

A couple of take aways from this game: we shoot too many outside shots with our rebounders nowhere close to the bucket. Our rebounders tend to "hurry up" a shot instead of getting their feet set and going up strong. Clay seems to want to score so badly when he comes in that he becomes his own worst enemy. I think the move to the paint has hurt his game. He forces instead of letting the game come to him. Kohl played additional minutes and scored at will. He obviously tired and missed some chippies late. Mahki Morris is becoming a force off the bench. When Daniels gets a steal he is energized. Daniels, Miller and Mason are terrors on the defensive end. I feel comfortable with our 10 deep lineup. I think as the year goes on, our ability to wear teams down will be very important.

Lamar had just one player I think we would want and that was Buster (I think that was his last name.) Harrison was Ok, but I was surprised they only lost by a little less than 20. We are fun to watch on defense and Mason is sometimes magical. I hope we can stabilize our play and be more consistent, especially against the top teams in conference. I was surprised Lamar got as many first place preseason votes as ACU. They are not a team that matches up well with us. They did begin the game as if they had studied film and were ready. The atypical play opening the second half blew their strategy out the window. That was athleticism at work, not set plays.

Biggest thing, we got the conference game W and I agree with most of the comments y'all have posted above. So, I'm going to beat the same two dead horses I've been beating so I apologize, but these drive me crazy, nine games in (large enough sample):
Free throws - we shot above our season average (61%) today hitting 14-21, but that won't cut it against SFA, Sam, UCA. Heck, Lamar hit 19-24 today. At my house, we cheer made free throws. Finishing - I can't recall a team that misses more put-backs and layups under the basket. Per LiveStats, we were 17-35 on layups and Lamar was 11-17. Again, that won't cut it against the conference big boys.
I'll shut up about these and won't mention again the rest of the season.
On the positive side: Defense will keep us in every game. It's fun to watch these guys. Announcer made comment that ACU is best he's seen this year at drawing charges. IT wears teams down having to work so hard to score. Morris and Allen are getting better every game, it seems to me. They could be huge come conf tourney time. Laughlin looks like such a pure scorer - hoping he gets more comfortable with the college game and becomes a go-to guy. Kohl's presence was a factor today, altering shots and passes - if he can stay out of foul trouble and play within himself (forego the threes and stay down low), I like our chances.

At the game. The refs were so inconsistent. I think because we are so aggressive on defense, they were anticipating fouls whether or not there actually was a foul. Besides the technical, they called Damion with palming the ball ON HIS FIRST DRIBBLE. Weirdest call I’ve seen in a while.
Our bigs missed a lot of layups because they were getting hammered and the refs were just letting it go.

I don't often complain about the refs, but the above comments are spot on. We have had some very inconsistent officials, and some who simply make bad calls. Today there were cases of both "no calls" and calls decided before the events even took place. That is bad officiating. I am guessing these are conference officials assigned to the games so bad calls may be making their way around the conference. When you play the game, all you hope for is consistency. We did not get that today.

Cattitude, I agree. Kohl especially was being fouled almost every play down the floor. Later, he trapped their point guard, dove on the floor for a loose ball, and got called for a foul. Another bogus call.
I actually think Harrison is really good. He is freshman and can get to the basket whenever he wants. Sullivan is undersized, but he battles really well. Buster was off. 2-12 from 3. Have to give credit to our guards who harassed him all game long. They also had 4 players that did not make the trip, 3 of those haven't played at all.
This might sound odd, but an 18 point win at home is really good. These coaches know each other well. For those that don't know, I get to work with Chris at the scorers table for most home games. Joe is right in front of me (he's consistently in my way). The staff was calling out to watch for this, they are going to do that. The key isn't how much we win by, but do we win or not.
Some notes around the conference today- SFA beat New Orleans by 11 Sam Houston beat Nicholls by 3. Nicholls is pretty good, losing to LSU by only 6 earlier in the year UCA beat McNeese by 14
