The Tide is a whole lot faster it looks to me. O-State with an injured QB... a 'Bama advantage in my view. My guess is 90+ percent favor the Tide. N.B. After the Bears whipped the Steelers, anything is possible.

The offensive scheme for Alabama is amazing -- they get DeVonta Smith open every way imaginable. This first half makes the UT hire of Sarkisian as their HC look brilliant.

All Texas needs is a QB like Jones, a receivdr like Smith, a DC that can coach good defense, and a recruiting coordinator that can keep the best Texas kids from going to the "evil empire" north of the Red River.

Alabama is loaded with power and quickness, wow. Even their big guys in the interior seem faster. Sark is not going to have that, at least for a while, at UT. How does a 310 pounder catch a running back on a sweep?

This game also showed the value of having a receiver with elite speed and an OC that designed different plays to get him the ball. When you have speed but only know one or two plays (jet sweep or quick wide receiver screen) that speed can controlled. I loved the ingenuity of coach Sark. I hope he works out at Texas and the experience doesn't "drive him to drink."

Coastal Carolina would have made it more interesting.

Coastal Carolina would have made it more interesting. Now that is funny but maybe closer to the truth.

Not sure if that comment was in jest or not but Coastal Carolina would probably have been destroyed too. Alabama was head and shoulders above every other team this year. They just had no weaknesses. It is amazing what Saban can do with his coaching staff. He loses coaches every year who become HC's. He takes "losers" and makes them attractive to other programs. To me, this is as amazing as anything Saban does.

I find it incredible that he gets guys to buy in. There aren’t many programs that can churn out pros off of a year of shine. He does that. He gets guys that are 5 stars and come in and play some year 1, little more year 2, and shine in year 3 and are 1st round picks. Guys stick with it and they buy in and they play special teams and they accept their role. As much as I like parity, it’s admirable the way that they stay consistent and disciplined, even with the revolving door of assistants.

I once read an article about his recruiting criteria, which go well beyond the physical tools that determine star ratings. Saban will likely be remembered as the best college coach of all time. It pains me to say it but it’s true,

Lots of chiefs, not enough Indians. I hope Sark works out. The Big 12 (and OU) needs for UT to be a top 10 program.

Agree. I want all the Big 12 to be strong. It is not really fun when one school dominates a conference whether it is OU or Texas or anyone else. When all in the conference are contenders, then you have a great situation. Secretly I wish A&M was still in the Big 12. Imagine Tech, West Virginia, Baylor, TCU... and now Iowa State, etc. Only Kansas seems to be a laggard yet they are typically great in basketball. The SEC has lots of firepower and these two conferences are my pick as the best.
I am hoping the laggards in the WAC move on as the new five come in for the same reason.

No excuses but my Buckeyes were “spent” after the Clemson game. Anyway, we had to be at 100% to have had a chance at an upset. Excellent offensive strategy by Alabama and line play. Our defense was overmatched. However, i agree the reason Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State are where they are is they are known by recruits for their ability to put players into the NFL. That is why Ohio State has left Michigan in the dust over the last 20 years. Alabama has shown their strength by manhandling 5 good programs year in and year out. The Big 12 has been OU and a contender or two each year; the Big 10, Ohio State and the same; the ACC, Clemson and the same. If conferences became more balanced, there would have to be more playoff spots, My background: grew up in Abilene, son of ACU faculty, ACU class of ‘77 (Montgomery years), Ph.D. Ohio Sate ‘83 ( the end of Woody and Earle Bruce); my MD degree, and my family, UT graduates, so I have been blessed with a lot of fun observing good football. You guys are great, giving very informative insight, Love this blog.

I like your analysis of conferences because I think you are right. Ohio State has left Michigan in the dust (and the others) that has not boosted the Big 10, only Ohio State. There used to be five or so possible contenders on a regular basis, even if the Buckeyes were the top of the heap. The Southland has four or five contending schools and a few much weaker ones including some lacking adequate facilities. The next few years will be shake out years for universities all around the country. Who knows what the alignment of school might ultimately turn out to be. I just want ACU to always be in that "Contender" realm. That has certainly been our history in a few different sports, despite some dry spells.
