Next, let's look at the TE group
Lutz- Jr Gr. Miles- Soph Stripling- Soph Caldwell- RFr Colt Cooper- True Fr
Gone: Hohenstein Tr. Price
I never felt like we used Hohenstein to his full capability. That being said, he was a talented player and will be missed. Lutz is entering his 5th year in the program. He received the most playing time in 2020, but he only had 6 catches. Miles and Caldwell mainly played on special teams, but I do think both could be decent players for the Wildcats. Overall, I think this unit will take a small step backward.
Again if you vote, tell us why you voted the way you did

I agree that we didn't use Hohenstein as much as we should have. Because of that, I think we will be about the same.

I'd think we can be better specifically because we steadfastly refused to use Hohenstein. I don't think Lamberson or Dorrel (or whoever has called plays the past 3 years) knows how to use a TE. For me it's getting to be a "what's the use" position because we don't utilize the potential we have there. I think if Colt Cooper wants to be the best we've ever had at TE, he is doomed to be very frustrated.

I am going with about the same if we utilize the players we have appropriately. Use them correctly and they should at least be AS effective. Hopefully they have a good Spring and Fall camp...

We’ve used backup lineman as blocking TEs and we’ve never utilized the position much otherwise.

We’ve used backup lineman as blocking TEs and we’ve never utilized the position much otherwise. Cody Ennis gave us a glimpse of how we could more effectively utilize our TE during his senior year. We haven’t done much since then.

We don't utilize the TE as you'd expect in an offense like ours, so it doesn't matter if we got a 5 star. If we don't use him, it doesn't matter who he is.

I also don't think that we use the TE effectively, in most cases they are an extra OL and we are using 3 WR's. Cody Ennis did do well, but it was only in his senior season (he had more receptions in that 1 year than in the previous 3 combined). We had good success with Ben Gibbs 10 years ago or so. I voted that we are much worse, because we lost the 1 TE that saw any meaningful action in 2020. And, I simply don't know the blocking ability of any of the returnees.

I always thought that Ennis would break out but we just never seemed to feature him like I thought we could/would. The last time I recall us having a game changing TE was James Hill and that has been over 20 years ago. The idea of an ACU TE making it into onto the Seahawks roster seems incredible today.

So much depends on how the coaches perceive the role of a tight end. Is he a huge dude who blocks off the edge for the running game? or is he a tall inside receiver who is moved around to find impossible matchups for the other team? or both? I would say, like many of you, that the role of the tight end is not well defined. Perhaps that an artifact of personnel, I don't know.

Looking back over the last 8 years of recruiting for the position of TE. Not sure what this says but here goes. Maybe some of you remember some of these names: Liam Flowers--played TE until injured Cody Ennis--QB turned into TE Hunter Griffith--never came to school or played Emoree Giddens--recruited as a TE/OL but played as an OL Trevor Crain--played 1 yr and then transferred Jackson Pace--Transferred Remington Lutz--still on roster Jordan Bruner--never came or transferred Kevin Ventura-Cortes--played some and then transferred Paxton Bergdoll--on roster 1 yr and then transferred Will Morgan--recruited as a DL but played some at TE a little 1 year and then left school Branden Hohenstein--played 2 yrs and then transferred Gabe Sonnier--on roster for 1 yr and then transferred Logan Smith--on roster 1 yr and then transferred Trace Price--on roster, QB turned TE Noah Caldwell--on roster Colt Cooper--recruit Andrew Stripling--QB turned TE, on roster
So, currently we have 2 players on the roster who were recruited as TE's--Lutz and Caldwell. We have 2 more players who played QB in HS who have been moved to TE--Stripling and Price We have one TE recruit--Cooper
We have had 17 players who received scholarships/committed to us listed as TE's (last 8 yrs). Of that number only Flowers, Hohenstein and Lutz (and Crain?) played significant minutes at the position. Ennis and Morgan (used only as a blocker) played significant minutes but were recruited for other positions. The alarming thing to me is how many of these players transferred after being here for a while. They include: Griffith (may have never come), Giddens, Crain, Pace, Bruner (may have never come), Ventura-Cortes, Bergdoll, Hohenstein, Sonnier, Smith. Maybe if you researched our commitments at other positions you'd come up with the same percentages of players who leave but I don't think so. Is it the position? Is it the guys we've recruited? Is it the use of the players by the coaches? I don't know. What I do know is that the only two effective receivers at the position for the past 8 years have been Ennis and Hohenstein and we did not target them nearly enough for the talent they had. Hopefully Colt Cooper can change all that. He certainly looks to have the tools.

Bogey, Stripling is still a QB. OK. Someone (wildcat23) earlier reported he had been moved to TE. My bad.

Sure makes you wonder if those guys figured out pretty quickly that we don't really use our tight ends for much besides blocking. It is frustrating to me that if we aren't going to have a wide open "run and shoot" offense why we don't use our tight end more.
