I received an email from Neal Coates that there will be a retirement party for Mel on Friday, September 10 from 1:30-3:00, at the Brown Library Packer Forum. I feel honored to have been one of Mel’s earliest students and my son one of his last. His contribution to ACU as the head of the Political Science Department and preparing students to attend law school can not be overstated.

He and Dr. Galloway in the history department were probably the two best teachers I had at ACU.

In the fall of 1997, I had Dr. Haileys (Mel and Jan) for university 100. While there wasn't much to that class, I remembered them as an incredible couple

He and Dr. Galloway in the history department were probably the two best teachers I had at ACU. I definitely agree and would add Gary Thompson to that mix. I worked with Gary on his first campaign and he asked me to come to Austin and work for him during his first term in office. Dr. Galloway was like listening to a grandfather telling stories of the old West. Just incredibly informative and such an entertaining class.

Such a great description. I first had him for US History and loved him so also took him for Texas History, The Civil War, and The Third Reich. He made you feel like you were there in person. And he would be covered in chalk by the end of class!

Mel was a student when I was in school back in the day. In never had the privilege of taking one of Bennie Galloway’s classes but I did get to know him a bit in retirement. The two of us volunteered at the Christian Service Center and I spent time with him sharing pantry duties and listened to him tell stories while filling grocery orders. Lemoine Lewis, Max Leach, Preston Harper and Ina Greene were my favorite profs.
I’m glad to hear ACU has carried in the tradition of making an impact on students lives.

Mel and Jan and Dr Mrs Cattitude and I shared a duplex on 12th street the school year after after both of us couples got married in the summer of ‘69. The dividing wall between the apartments was made of tissue paper, I think. So when I say we had an intimate friendship …
Long time friend. One of the best people I’ve ever known.
