I have been a Ryan Stapp fan since he stepped on the field 3 years ago.My appreciation for his game grows each week. Glad the Jacksonville announcers saw what we've been blessed to see for several years. You nailed it. Stapp was sensational yesterday.

It’s time to bring in someone like John David Baker or another well established FCS coach who can recruit in Texas and bring the Air Raid back In the past 42 years, only 3 coaches have had above a .500 record at ACU. All of them were below D1 level. I think maybe people need to realize you have to find a way to get the top players so coaches can expand the playbook. And also look to see that maybe ACU is the problem, not the coaches. It's tough to get top players to Abilene.

Glad the Jacksonville announcers saw what we've been blessed to see for several years. You nailed it. Stapp was sensational yesterday. Here here....I could not agree more with your Stapp assessment. Stapp played excellent! I would like to attempt to clarify my earlier recruitment comment. First off I believe this team and other past teams have had talent better than .500 records. So When I speak about poor recruiting, it is around recruiting players to fit the coaches offensive and defensive schemes. If a coach doesn’t have the proper players to fit their schemes they need to modify their schemes to fit their players on their roster. Coach Dorrel’s best season record was in his second season with a majority of players on the team recruited from the previous coaching staff. I see the same tired plays over and over. Talk about a lesson in futility. After five seasons only one player is a hold over and he is not starting or playing. So this is the conundrum...is the issue coaching or players recruited playing on the field. Either way the issue lays at the feet of the Head Coach. I’m not a negative person by nature. I see player talent on this team...heck I drank the purple drink and few weeks ago picked this ACU team to win 7 games.

ACU’s academic rigor and personal conduct standards are daunting enough. Yet, when you have to do that from Abilene, it becomes darn near impossible. That said, it’s been done before, and I’m confident it will be done again.

Your .500 coaches record comment got me to looking at ACU records for the last 42 years. With that said, I took the liberty of going back and pulling additional information over the last 42 years plus plus one to include all of Coach Sinton’s years with ACU. Over the time frame you provided ACU has had 20 winning seasons, 6 NCAA Playoff appearances and three Conference championships. We’ve had one winning season and no playoff appearance under Coach Dorrel. To your second point. Yes, you are correct this happened while ACU was a D2 team. However, for those of us around ACU long enough....will know this little factoid the majority of the teams that are in the WAC now and previously with the Southland were the same teams ACU Played while in Division II. For this reason I believe ACU should be competitive today. Lastly, the coaches are paid to map out their plan to recruit the proper players to be successful on the playing field and in the classroom. If the current plan is not working changes need to be made to plan or the planner.

Not sure players posting here will go over too well. Not sure it matters in two weeks. This post may be a lot...... You going to write the check? Dorrel has 2 years left on his contract at $238K a year, couple that with the $300K you're going to have to spend to attract who all the football experts on this board are wanting, as well as the increase in assistant salary pool you're looking at around $900K, minimum...Probably closer to $1M. acusports.com/news/2019/8/7/footballs-dorrel-awarded-with-contract-extension I'm amazed to hear the constant chatter on this board of running the coaches down, news flash......this is ABILENE CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY. Yes I get it you had success way back win and won some National Championships, yes I realize you made the move up and expected great success but times have changed, the game has changed and let me tell ya, kids have changed!! I played D1 college football, coached in HS and won a state championship, talked to and have been around a lot of college coaches so I know a little, probably not as much as some of you but I know a little. You ever been to a Gary Patterson practice, how about Jimbo Fisher?? A lot of MF's and GD's, calling kids everything in the book, running kids down. Yes they win, but at what cost? That kid going to become a dad and think thats the right way to do things? Let's get realistic in our expectations. I've even seen one of you run Dorrel's play board down. You ever have to keep up with personnel groupings, down and distance play calls, opponent tendencies? I carried 4-5 big laminated cards, wish I would have had a big play board, just makes sense. I'd like for the naysayers to post where they work, I'll try to stop by these next few weeks and tell you what a crappy job you do, even though i have no idea what your job really entails. The way some of you who probably never strapped up a helmet and went to war talk about these men is repulsive. Easy to hide behind a keyboard. Unreal. I also don't think the post from the "player" that has disappeared was a real player or current player. I've got someone close to me on that team and let me tell you this, they love their coaches. They want to win and they put in the work to be successful, players and coaches. Those coaches put in 16+ hour days, every freaking day. They want to win, their livelihood depends on it. They are good men, who love these kids and the feeling is the same from the players. We got blown at at SMU which honestly was to be expected. Central Arkansas was a huge disappointment for players, coaches and fans, should have won that game. I was at EKU, SFA and JSU and we were not blown out at any of these. We've been competitive, a few calls, a few lucky breaks and a few more executions we are very competitive in all of these games! I've read comments from some of you that say the players are unmotivated or don't care. All i'm going to say to that is you have no clue what your talking about and no idea the hours they put in. Stick to gaming or whatever you do. Recruiting: Been talked about a lot. This is a tough place to get studs to come to. Academic standards, dorm curfew, no girls in your room, mandatory chapel, no typical college gameday atmosphere (lack of real tailgating). I mean let's be real here guys, this place is special and it takes a special kids to come here. A good player, but a kid of great character! I love winning but I sure love the character aspect and coaches leading men to be great fathers and husbands and contributors to society. Let me put it this way, my kid has a chance to play for a guy like Jimbo and gets cussed out everyday and wins the SEC or play for Adam Dorrell and go 5-6 and becomes a better man because of it, I'm an Adam Dorrel guy everyday! NFL is unlikely for majority of these kids, but being dads and husbands is a high probability. You got to know recruits parents read these boards, that's all I'm gonna say about that! I'm closing with this, support your team, support your coaches. I see all you season ticket holders in the seat backs leaving before the games over. I don't know if your going inside to eat banana pudding or leaving the stadium. In any event stay till the end of ball game and support these kids and coaches. Footballmama probably gets this post more than the rest of you guys. I think she's lived life on the other side and understands the big picture.

Your post, oldtimecat, gives me pause. Hiding behind a keyboard and saying "repulsive things" about folks wouldn't be part of your own profile would it. I want the best of both worlds--good character kids and a winning athletics program. You sound like it's impossible to have both. Maybe you are right. We could save a lot of money by just dropping all athletics, methinks. Hey, a thought occurred-we could have an academia message board. Just strap on the old back pack and have at it. Congrats on your state championship.I bet it was quite a ride.

A couple of thoughts:
This board is docile compared to a major college football programs message boards. The reality is we can be competitive and still make stupid simple mistakes and run simple predictable plays with limited success and call that out. Calling out specific players isn’t very considerate, but comparing the athleticism and aggressive nature of our opponents to ACU’s team is fair game.
I played under Thomsen, we didn’t get MF’d at practice. We also won some games and got some good players. Maybe those same players wouldn’t qualify under today’s standards, but we got them here.
Golding built a good basketball program dealing with the same limited resources. Maybe even less so considering football got the new locker room and stadium and coaches salary to work with.
I agree ACU is hard to recruit too. I know how many of my teammates complained about it so I’ve never denied that.

I'm not saying I agree with everything coaches do or schemes they run but i'm not going to get on here and run them down. I've heard a lot of chatter about CT, but that guy is making 500K a year at FSU ast TE coach and I think that staff gets one more year. bogeyman not sure if you were being facetious or not but yeah it was a great run. Now those kids getting married and are having kids and and it's great to still be a part of their lives and for them to still call me coach.

Not being facetious. A state championship is a big deal. I lived thru coming close with a Freer Buckaroo team in the early 50's and a championship with Plano in the mid 70's as a fan. I know the "buzz" such a run creates, not just for the team but for families, friends and fans. To be part of that is special.

I'll jump in here-
What does it mean that we are Abilene Christian University? Does this mean we should be happy with how things have been going and accept participation trophies? Does it mean that we don't have the resources to spend money for new facilities, coaches, etc? Dorrel is 18-31 at ACU! Did any of us think that would be the case when he came here? I didn't. I didn't think he would walk in and hand us FCS titles, but I didn't expect this either
I love these coaches too. I know several of them personally. I like what they are about and who they are off the field. That being said, they have to win. There are things that this staff has done well. Academics has been excellent. There hasn't been much about off the field issues. They are doing good things in the community. But, we aren't winning. You want fans to come to games, start winning.
This is going to sound arrogant, but no one understands recruiting or follows it more than I do. I worked at ACU for 8 years. I know the university inside and out and I know, and have often stated the challenges to recruit talent. We can't recruit with SFA and Sam. But how does UIW out recruit us? There is NO excuse for that. In some ways, the post the football alum posted is right. There is a lot more talent and depth than in recent years. That said, when we play Sam, it will be a middle school team playing a varsity. So how do we recruit better? We have to know who we are. When we were a D2 powerhouse 12 years ago or so, we had loads of talent. We were constantly sending players to the NFL. I spoke with 2 current players last year about the WT game. They couldn't believe we were that good. You know what, that makes me sad. Some of these coaches and players DON'T THINK IT CAN HAPPEN HERE! It can, and it has and it can again. I think you can recruit the kid that is a 4.0 student that will do everything right. And you take the student that is a 2.5 kid, that will pass, but will also cause the staff to hold their breath some.
As far as the gameday atmosphere, it is bad. This is on the university. Where have the freshmen been this year? I've seen the clubs, but not the freshmen. One thing that MUST CHANGE is the pre-game tailgate for clubs. That should end 30 minutes before the game starts not after the game has already started. That is bad! I've said this a ton, but the military day is a joke! If they wanted to put me in charge of gameday stuff, I would do it. They wouldn't even after to pay me money. Just get a Dr. Pepper and we will call it good. The whole game day experience needs to be revamped.
Please do not read this and think that I do not support the coaches or players. I do. But we can't be satisfied with 18-31. Dorrel can't be happy with that record. I want this group of coaches and players to succeed. But, if they can't then leadership has to look at what is best and make a decision that might be unpopular

I think Dorrel would be the first to admit that if he is let go that it was because of not winning. Coaches know their jobs depend on winning. My frustration is that I can't really figure out what the team wants to be. They also remind me of UT currently in that they don't look like they expect to win when they get on the field. To me, that goes back on the coaches. From everything I've seen, Dorrel and Lambo are great guys but they aren't getting the job done. Not sure we can afford to make a change until his contract is up but I think we have to take a chance as soon as possible that there is a coach out there that has high moral standards and can also win.
Having said that, I do wonder if this year would be different if Stone had not gotten hurt. I have seen some signs of a little more imagination in play calling and just wonder if more imagination is limited by QB and receiver play.

The one game we missed was banana pudding night. And we’ve never left a game early in both our seasons as season ticket holders.
I view this site as kind of a place where folks who love ACU can go and celebrate the high points and supportively critique the lower points. There is no built in hatred of anything purple and white here, only guys, and a few women, jawing with each other about the school we love. Yes, it gets intense sometimes but the same happens in any family.
