A lot depends on who wins the QB job. It was telling to me that Mansell was not chosen to go to media day. Maybe no big deal but if you have an incumbent QB who the team sees as the leader, you'd think he would be there to represent. I'm wondering if Long and McIvor can make a pitch to be our starter. I like both with a lean towards McIvor. Maybe Mansell will surprise but in any event I think we will be much stronger at QB. I think Stephen Lee will work wonders for our anemic past years offense.

I suspect the nod will go to the QB that picks up Lee’s offense the quickest.

The more I focus on this team, the more I'm drawn to the QB battle for starter. Will Mansell get the nod as the returning starter? Will McIvor get the nod because of his past relationships with coach Patterson and others on this new coaching staff? Will Long get the nod because of his immense athletic ability and his desire to play QB? I think each of these guys can run but coach Lee is a "pass first" OC so their passing abilities will be under close scrutiny. Mansell had some challenges last year missing wide open receivers. I don't know about Long's and McIvor's deficiences but if they all start out even then this will be a great competition. Will the addition of new receivers be the difference makers for our pass offense? Will the addition of talented OL players be the difference? Maybe Jordan Herrod can keep the spotlight on this battle with interviews and commentary from coaches Lee and Patterson. I really look forward to this fall camp and the progress this team can make thru the competition at various positions. Should be fun.

The QB battle will be interesting. To me, Mansell was "adequate" last year but never really stood out. How much of that was the O line? The receivers? The play calling? I think a lot of his being only average was because of those things. With the new guys and the new system, if he remains only average then I think a change will be made. Mansell does bring a lot of leadership and desire to win that gives him a head start in my mind.

I think the edge is to the senior Mansell going into camp. Has more game experience. Lee is a qb guru. I think he can get the best out of all of them. Did I overlook Carter Highhouse, the transfer from Butler? Scholarship? WO?

Based on the fact that Mansell was appointed one of the four team captains, he will almost definitely by the starter against Lamar.
