I meant to get a track "preview" on the board literally for the past 2 months. I first planned on getting it up before indoor conference, then before outdoor season started, and now, I am beating the outdoor conference meet literally by about 3 weeks. I will post the women's preview first and will hopefully post the men's preview later today.
WOMEN - the women's team has been really solid the past several years. The women were 2nd outdoors last year (to a strong SFA team) and 3rd indoors in 2022 (by 1/2 of a point to SFA). The women dropped off considerably this indoor season - falling to a 6th place tie. Why the big drop? ACU lost a staggering amount of firepower after last season. I did some research and 5 of last year's graduates scored 354 points (!) at the conference level in their time at ACU. Annina Brandenburg (112 pts) was the best thrower in ACU history; Taylor Tolen (86) was the best sprinter at ACU in at least 2 decades; Megan Kirby (76) was the best all-around athlete at ACU in a while -- she got many of her points in the grueling multi-events; Briahna Gerlach (47) was the jack-of-all-trades for the distance runners, scoring in 6 different distance races in her time at ACU; and Zoe Spinn (32) -- all in the high jump. And, all 5 of these women spent their entire careers at ACU.
There is still a lot of talent for the Wildcats, but much of it is at the developmental stage. After this season, ACU will lose 2 more key women who have been big scorers -- Irene Rono and Payton Kirk, so the hunt will be on for more difference makers - either on the team or who can be recruited to the team.
Returning conference scorers -
-Irene Rono scores big in every conference meet and the school record holder in both the 5K and 10K. She will really be missed.
-Payton Kirk - has developed into a terrific athlete for ACU - at the WAC indoor this year, placed 3rd in the LJ and 4th in the PV, as well as winning the outdoor and indoor LJ in 2022. Currently ranked #1 in the LJ, #4 in the PV, #100 in the 100 hurdles and #25 in the 100, forcing her way onto the sprint relay. Recruited as a multi-athlete, she has done well by concentrating on long jump, pole vault, hurdles and sprints.
-Ella Anttila - was 2nd team All-America this year indoors in the triple jump. She has won the TJ at conference the last 4 championships - both indoor and outdoors.
-Zoe Burleson - was runnerup in the SP at the WAC indoor championships, as well as getting 2nd in the discus and 3rd in the SP in 2022 outdoors. Currently ranked #1 in the discus, #2 in the discus and #21 in the hammer throw in the WAC (she is picking up the HT for the first time this year).
-JaDasia Sims - the best quartermiler at ACU in a while, she is also a good high jumper. Indoors this past February she was 2nd in the 400 and runs a great leg on the 4x400. She is currently ranked #7 in the HJ, #13 in the 400, and #25 in the LJ. She will move up a lot in the 400 after she runs at the Michael Johnson Inv this coming weekend.
-Savannah Walker - came to ACU as a 100/200 runner, but is developing into a very competitive 200/400 runner. Placed 6th in the 200 outdoors in 2022 and is a steady member of both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Currently ranked #6 in the WAC 200 and #8 in the 400.
-D'Anna Smith - a solid sprinter, she placed 7th in the 60 at the WAC indoors and 7th in the 100 and 8th in the 200 outdoors a year ago. Has only run in 2 meets this year, so her current rankings are not that good. Some good races at the Michael Johnson this coming weekend should help.
-Prudence Kiyeng - a national qualifier in XC in 2021, she has not been able to build on that to become a dominant runner. She did place 8th in the indoor 5K in 2021 and was 12th in the 5K a few months ago.
-Jakaylon Sabbath - I think she was a walkon a couple of years ago from Dallas Carter, but she has become a steady hand on the relays -- running on the 5th place 4x4 relay indoors this year.
-Courtney Latham - all of her points have been on relays -- this past indoor season on the 5th place 4x4 and 8th place distance medley relay and on the 8th place DMR in 2022. She is ranked #12 in the 400 hurdles this year.
-Julia Perry - another 400 hurdler who has scored on the relays - placing 10th in the 400 hurdles last spring, but scoring on the 4x400 relay in 2022 outdoors and 8th place DMR indoors that year.
-Luize Velmere - scored by getting 7th in the triple jump indoors in 2022; she apparently was injured indoors during this year and has not jumped again since the middle of the indoor season.
-Grace White - finally scored this past indoor season, when she ran on the 8th place DMR. She also placed 9th in the indoor 5K a year ago. This after overcoming long COVID that wiped out her XC season this past fall.
-I waited too long to write this preview, because more women have been added to the IR: Amy Ambelang - hit the inside rail on the indoor track at Tech and ruptured an Achilles (ouch!), hopefully will be back by next indoor season; Tessa Holdermann - scored in the steeplechase in her first year running the event last year, then had to RS in the aftermath of an ankle surgery, only to sustain a fracture on the water jump on her first steeple of the year (ouch - again!). Rylee Jordan has been sidelined for almost 2 years -- missing all of 2022 and all 0f 2023 up to this point.
Returning redshirts: Mackenzie Blain - a 4A state qualifier in the vault in 2021, she redshirted last year and placed 13th this year in the PV indoors; and Skylar Harris - got 6th in the Region I-3A 400 in 2021 (right here at Elmer Gray) and redshirted last year as she learned several new events in the heptathlon - she was 17th in the WAC pentathlon and currently #8 in the WAC heptathlon.
Returning non-conference scorers - Paige Boucher -- 10th in the WAC 100 hurdles last spring (after playing soccer for ACU in the fall of 2021), I keep thinking she is going to burst out on the WAC scene - currently ranked #17 in the WAC in that event; Jessica Campbell was 9th in the hep last eyar and 14th in the Javelin - currently ranked #9 in the javelin and has not completed a heptathlon yet this season; Kailey Roskop - 9th in the WAC discus last spring - she is currently ranked #11 in the hammer and #15 in the discus. Both Katelyn Coldicott (5K, 10K) and Breonna Mc-Carthy are redshirts who have shown some flashes of helping.
Newcomers:
-Kaitlyn Callaway - 12th in the D3 javelin for HSU last year - has already surpassed her 2022 best and is ranked #4 in the JT in the WAC right now
-Peyton Bornstein - 41st in the WAC XC, currently ranked #10 in the WAC steeplechase. Was the Connecticut Class M 3200 champ as a junior and runnerup in the 1600 as a senior (Class M is roughly equivalent to Texas' 3A)
-Riley Pyeatt - won the Washington State 2A 800 last year. Placed 8th in the WAC indoor 800, but has only run in one meet this year outdoors. WA 2A is roughly equivalent to Texas' 4A.
-Isabella Evans, from McKinney Boyd - has been a solid add, indoors she got 19th mile and the 800; currently ranked #18 in the 800.
-Hannah Foster - a HS sprinter who was recruited as a potential multi-athlete, she transitioned to the short sprints after Amy Ambelang was injured. She was 5th in the 100 and 9th in the 400 at the Region III-6A meet last year, so should help in the 4x100 and possibly the 4x400 relay.
-Gracyn Reed - 4th in the 4A 400, plus ran the anchor leg for Kennedale's 4x400 relay last year. Did not attend the indoor conference meet.
-Kate Williams, from distance running powerhouse Boerne Champion - 50th WAC XC in 2022, but has not competed this year since the 2nd indoor meet of the year. Medical RS?
-Natalie Poe - from tiny Lubbock Kingdom Prep - at the TAPPS 2A she placed 2nd in the HJ, 3rd in the 100H in 2022; and 1st in the 200, 3rd in the HJ, and 6th in the LJ in 2021. 16th in the WAC pentathlon and she shows a LOT of potential.
-Avery Myrick - a thrower from Boerne Geneva School (sister of former football player Easton Myrick) - she is learning 2 new events (hammer and javelin) and has the luxury of redshirting (which would be perfect for EVERY incoming freshman coming out of HS). She has been throwing unattached in lots of meets already -- her throws would be #8 in the javelin, #12 in the discus and #23rd in the hammer. She will really help the next 3 years.
-Walkons Jada Roquemore (2nd in the District 8-5A 300H); Kate Hansen, from Austin HS (94th in the WAC XC-2022); and particularly Kiley Kjellstrom, could help. Kjellstrom placed 13th in the Southland Conf JT last year for HBU/HCU, where she also played VB. She has lots of potential in the JT and possibly in the hammer as well, but will need to have surgery first.
If the outdoor meet was held right now, I think the ACU women would place as high as 6th and as low as 9th. It will take some of the dinged-up athletes to get back to 95-100%, to move up even as high as 5th place. More later as we get closer to the conference meet.

Is Kaydi Pursley no longer at ACU?

Kaydi is no longer competing for ACU. Her Father, Britt Pursley (former A-A vaulter at Tech) has opened an indoor vault facility in Merkel and Kaydi is working there to help get the gym going. I think she is also married now - possibly only engaged, but I am not certain. I think she decided to move on with life. I hate seeing her leave the team - she is a great kid and it was so cool to see a Pursley on the ACU team again.

Here is the men's track "preview" - just like the women's preview above, I am getting the preview out late in the season. The men were not nearly as impacted by graduation as the women's team. The key loss was JJ Ply, who was a consistent point scorer and the first male 1st-team A-A in track and field since 1988. He will be impossible to replace on the national level, but his conference points can be replaced. And, JJ is still with the ACU team. He is training for the USATF national meet this coming summer and he is actually a paid T&F coach for ACU -- he moved up from a grad assistant when the coach that was hired to take the jumps/multis job early in the school year was released from her contract. I have already seen a surge in the performances of the jumpers since JJ took over.
RETURNING CONFERENCE POINT SCORERS
-Levi Chambers - 8th in the WAC 10K last spring, he sustained an injury indoors at the WAC meet during the 5K and has not competed outdoors at all this season. I hear that he is about ready to compete, but it will be a short season for Levi, with conference only weeks away.
-Ethan Christian -- 4th in the decathlon last spring and 7th in the indoor pentathlon this year, Ethan was scheduled to compete in a decathlon a few week ago, but was sick that weekend. He may have to compete in his first decathlon of the year at conference, but looking at the WAC performance list, he has a legit shot at winning it all. Right now he is ranked #11 in the javelin, #12 in the 110H and #16 in the LJ in the WAC.
-Gabe Embree - placed 8th in the WAC SC last year and also was 12th place in the Texas Relays SC this year. Ranked #10 in the WAC right now in the steeple.
-Addison Franklin - had a big breakout indoors as he placed 5th in the indoor 200 at the WAC meet in February. Currently ranked #26 in the 100 and #37 in the 200 in the WAC. He needs a big meet in Waco this coming weekend to get into the thick of things in the conference sprints.
-Cooper Goggans - placed 5th in the WAC 800 outdoors last spring and 15th in the 800 indoors a few months back, although he did score at the indoor WAC meet with an 8th place finish in the distance medley relay (DMR). Ranked #11 in the 800 on the performance list and is definitely capable of scoring at conference.
-Will Harris - had a good meet indoors at the WAC championships getting 2nd in the LJ and just missing points by getting 9th in the TJ; also scored in the 2021 indoor TJ. Currently ranked #5 in the TJ and #6 in the LJ, as well as #16 in the 100. Could push his way onto the 4x1 relay.
NOTE: The 4x100 relay looks solid this year, running a 40.30, which puts them #2 on the WAC performance list. It is veteran group - Addison Franklin, Jared Williams, Jamal January, & Jack Marshall. I think they are capable of running well under 40 and could vie for the WAC championship.
-Neal Helgersen -- a solid miler, Neal got 13th in the mile indoors this year (11th in the mile in 2022) and 18th in the WAC outdoor 5K last year. I think he will probably run the 1500 outdoors at conference this year - the WAC is pretty loaded with 5K runners right now. Neal has scored at conference on the DMR in 2022 and 2023.
-Athan Huelskamp - he is having a breakthrough year, getting 2nd in the WT and 4th in the SP indoors, after getting 7th in the discus outdoors last spring. Currently ranked #2 in both the SP and DT. ACU should be scoring big in the throws outdoors this year.
-Jamal January - Jamal is the leader of this team. At the indoor meet, he scored 2nd in the 60H and 4th in the LJ. Outdoors last spring, he won the 110H, got 2nd in the 400H (which he has worked hard to build the stamina for the longer hurdle race) and 8th in the LJ. Jamal has worked hard to learn the LJ and to get strong enough to score well in the 400H -- he is ultimate team guy. He also runs on both relays.
-Jeremy King - okay, he is technically NOT a conference scorer, but I included him here because outdoors last spring, he made the finals of the 110H and false-started. That was after he made the finals in the 60H indoors last year, before getting DQ'd when he hit a hurdle hard and veered out of his lane - finishing the race, but getting DQ'd. He is ranked #5 in the WAC 110H, so maybe, just maybe, he scores some points this year.
-Maxwell Kiplagat - scored on the DMR indoors in February and has placed in the steeple in 2021 in the SLC meet. Ranked #11 in the WAC steeple.
-Jack Marshall - has made a really good collegiate sprinter, getting 2nd in the WAC indoor 200 this year and 3rd in the 200 and 5th in the 100 last spring. Ran a blistering anchor leg at the Texas Relays 4x200 relays chasing down 3 other good 200 meter runners in that race.
-Tyler Richardson - Tyler just keeps getting better and keeps scoring lots of points at conference. Indoors this year, he was 2nd in the SP and 8th it the WT and outdoors last spring he was 2nd in the SP and 3rd in the hammer. He has only competed in one outdoor meet, the Wes Kittley Inv in March, and he is ranked #1 in the WAC in the SP from that one meet. I hope he is ready to go by conference.
-Jared Williams - he made a last minute decision to redshirt outdoors last year and that should pay off handsomely for ACU this year. Jared is the best quartermiler on the team and arguably the 2nd best on the team in the 100 and 200. He makes the 4x100 and 4x400 better -- although ACU has not run our "A" 4x400 yet this year. I suspect that Jared and newcomer Matthew Mills are locks on running on the relay when they do finally run it.
POINT SCORERS REDSHIRTING: 1) Harrison Manuel - another upperclassman who redshirted last spring and it appears he will redshirt again this outdoor season, still returning from an injury last year; 2) Garrison Shindler was one of the best stories in 2022 - a lightly recruited halfmiler out of Illinois who blossomed by getting 6th indoors and 3rd outdoors, has had to redshirt due to a lingering illness that curtailed training; 3) Ryan Bornemeier - Ryan was a walkon kid who worked and worked to get better, scoring last spring by getting 7th in the 110H and barely missed scoring in the LJ (9th place), Ryan was in a car accident last fall and has been rehabbing all of 2023 and plans to return in 2024.
RETURNEES WHO REDSHIRTED IN 2022 - both of these athletes should have a profound impact at conference:
-Nate Collier - redshirted last year and put up some big numbers in the throws, good enough that he qualified for the US U20 championship in Eugene and got 5th in discus and 7th in the shot put. Nate ended up having to redshirt indoors again this year due to having to undergo hernia surgery and he is coming back slowly, but his potential is huge -- he is ranked #4 in the discus in the WAC right now with only a partial spin.
-Colt Cooper - Colt has been fitting in track meets where possible around his football spring practices -- he competes in track on weekends when he is not scrimmaging and is not traveling with the team when there is a scrimmage. The kid is good -- won the 4A SP and DT in HS at Quinlan HS (ranked #28 in the US in the discus and #31 in the SP as a HS senior). He is currently ranked #3 in the discus and #12 in the SP outdoors in the WAC, after getting 9th in the SP indoors.
OTHER RETURNEES - sprinters Joseph Baluti and Zach Young (#22 in the 100 and #24 in the 200); hurdler Luke White (#24 in the 110H); distance runners Luke Hernandez, Gabe Trevino and O'Brien Verdin; and jumpers Rhett Kahlden (may be redshirting) and Caleb Lawrence (#19 in the LJ). Zach Young and Caleb Lawrence probably have the best shots at competing at conference among this group.
NEWCOMERS - scholarship
-Rovaughn Banks - the football RB is listed on the T&F roster, but has yet to compete in anything.
-Tyce Chaney - West Salem, OR - 5th in the OR 6A 400, he did not run in the WAC indoor meet. He has a nice stride and loads of potential down the line, particularly if he can get stronger. He might still be able to get a spot on the 4x400 for the outdoor conference meet this year, but I suspect he will need to run in the 48's in the open 400 to get that opportunity.
-Canaan Fairley - San Antonio Johnson - he is redshirting this year. Immense potential in the decathlon, IF he can master the pole vault. He placed in the top 6 in 4 events at his HS 6A regional meet last year - the 100, 110H, 300H and HJ. He has competed in several meets this spring competing unattached and he is a very athletic kid. He will start to make an impact as soon as he gets on the track next year.
-Charlie Lee-Alliston - ACHS - was the TAPPS 2A 100 and 200 last year, but is really, really raw. He is a big, ol' strong kid, but Coach Dillard is having to iron out some bad habits he had in HS. He has run the 400 one time this year and has good potential for the future, but I don't think he can contribute this year.
-Matthew Mills - Tr-De Anza CC - could be a diamond in the rough. Picked up from a CA community college where he got little coaching, he has looked good in the 400 and will still have 2 years of eligibility after this year. I fully expect to see him running in the 46's in his time at ACU.
-Donovan Ramirez - freshman from Odessa, this is another kid with immense potential. He has already looked better jumping after JJ Ply became the full-time jumps coach, but he is still a long way from his HS marks. If he can put things together in the next few weeks, he can still have an impact at conference -- he is ranked #12 in the triple jump right now.
-Keaton Raney - 7th in the 5A 800 last year for Frisco Reedy, he has been slow getting untracked this year. He did score at the WAC meet, running a leg on the 8th place DMR. If he improves his times in the 800 and/or the 1500 in the next few weeks, he may get to run at conference.
-Tiras Reed - he did compete indoors, but has been held out of outdoors so far. Another newcomer with lots of potential.
-Rylan Smart - another thrower who is redshirting. Won the 4A DT and SP last year for Sanger. The kid is a sponge - he is learning 2 new events (HT and JT) and is looking good in all 4 throwing events as he throws unattached at various meets. Based on this throws this year as he throws unattached, he would be top 25 in all 4 throws, HT (#11), SP (#12), JT (#17) and Discus (#23) and I still think the discus could be his best throw. It has been a long time since ACU has had a "4-throw athlete", but Rylan could well be that man.
-Stone Smith - a thrower from Childress who is also redshirting, but he has been injured all year and will have to ease into it next season.
-Jacob Thomas - was 3rd last spring in the 5A PV for Gregory-Portland vaulting for Greg West, who is the father of ACU vault coach Mackenzie West Knight. Jacob scored 3 points indoors as he got 6th in the WAC meet and is currently ranked #11 on the WAC performance list.
NEWCOMER WALKONS - Horatio Banks, from Houston Christian (1st in the Southwest Prep Conf 300H); Kevin Castruita, a transfer from Chicago St who got 13th in the indoor 5K and may get to run in the 5K outdoors as well; Nick Jones, from Houston Christian (4th in the SPC 800) and currently ranked #48 in the 800 in the WAC; Samuel Lanham - from Benton County, KY - forced into action in XC after injuries, placing 87th at the WAC conference XC meet; Jacob Russell - from Liberty Hill - ran rather well in XC after being forced into action by injuries to some of the distance runners - got 58th at conference; JP Trook - from Tulsa Metro Christian - 4th in the OK 3A 800, he has run well on the track - ranked #44 in the WAC in the 800 and if he drops another couple of seconds off his 800 time in the next few weeks, might get to run at conference.
If the WAC meet was this weekend, I think the ACU men could place anywhere from 5th to 9th. However, if they go into the conference meet reasonably healthy, they could have a realistic shot at placing as high as 2nd -- I don't think that anyone in the WAC has a chance of catching a very deep GCU squad.

I am in Nacogdoches for the WAC T&F Championship and this meet will have to be a meet where ACU will be looking for small victories -- the team championships are out of reach this year.
MEN -- the clear-cut favorite is GCU, who should score in the 140 point range. Utah Valley is in good shape to get 2nd, scoring somewhere around 100 points. Looking at the performance chart, ACU did fall in the top of a 5-team scrum that was going to score in the 75-90 point range -- ACU, Tarleton, Southern Utah, SFA, CBU and UTA -- ACU being led by a strong throws group (could easily score in the 35-45 point range by themselves). However, at the home meet a couple of weeks ago, I find out that one of the key throwers had been dismissed from the team (I don't know why and I don't plan on asking why) and another has had an emergency appendectomy. Of the 2 remaining throwers, one will be throwing on a severely injured foot. The 35-45 points from the throws will dwindle to more like 10-15 points and ACU is looking more like an 7th/8th place finisher. OUCH. Plus, Levi Chambers was never able to bounce back from his injury at the indoor conference meet.
In order to climb up into the top-6, ACU will need to see big results from some of the old-timers on the team -- Jamal January in the hurdles (UTA brought a 2nd-team All-American hurdler with them into the WAC); Ethan Christian in the dec (UTA brought a 1st-team All-American with them into the WAC); Jack Marshall in the sprints, Jared Williams in the 400, Will Harris in the jumps, and Gabe Embree in the steeple. Some of the athletes who are right on the verge will need to come through - Addison Franklin in the sprints, Jeremy King in the hurdles, transfer Kevin Castruita in the 10K, true freshman Donovan Ramirez in the jumps, Matthew Mills and freshman Tyce Chaney in the 400.
I think the best case-scenario is 6th and more likely it will be 7th-8th. If ACU climbs into the top-5 and scores 80 points or more I will be ecstatic. ACU also has a stack of athletes redshirting, some due to medical reasons and some just because they need to get bigger and stronger. This team could be much improved next year and make a real run at top-3.
WOMEN - NM State looks like the frontrunner (likely scoring around 125 points), with SFA (scoring around 100 points) having the best shot at catching the Aggies. GCU, Utah Valley, UTA, ACU and CBU are all capable of scoring in the 70-90 point range. ACU just lost too much firepower from last year (see my preview in this thread) and getting somewhere in the 5th-7th range looks the most likely.
The jumps crew is quite strong - with Ella Anttila (TJ and LJ) and Payton Kirk (LJ) both conference champions. Throws are led by Zoe Burleson (who has a realistic shot at going to nationals in the discus). The throws could have an even bigger impact on the meet if Kailey Roskop (hammer, discus) and Kaitlyn Callaway (javelin) come through big. Irene Rono leads a very scaled down distance crew -- she still could score a lot in those events and freshman Peyton Bornstein had the potential of scoring in the steeple. The sprints have Ja'Dasia Sims (400), Savannah Walker (200) and D'Anna Smith (100) who have scored at conference in the past and big meets from these three could certainly aid the cause.
A couple of wild cards could be freshman Riley Pyeatt in the 800 (getting better and better as the year progresses) and Jessica Campbell in the heptathlon, who has been so close to scoring in the hep for the past 2 years. The Hep also has a RS-Freshman (Skylar Harris) and true freshman (Natalie Poe) who are showing great improvement in an event that greatly favors maturity.

The weather has wreaked havoc on the WAC meet. Heavy rains have wrecked the throwing area and HJ area, which is currently flooded under 2-3 feet of water.

Kevin Castruita runs a gutty race and finishes 4th in his 1st ever collegiate 10k. On the other hand, Irene Rono does not show up at the start line for the women's 10k. A career that has a lot of highs will finish in a decided down note. Disappointing.

What does not show up mean? Entered in the event, but does not show up for the start. Goes into the record book as a DNS for "did not start". By conference rule, she cannot run in the 5k, where she is not entered as well.
